Be careful out there! 29 Nov 2005 (Forum)
However with the extreme weather we're experiencing at the moment, which we get around once a year, we need to take extra care both before we set off and whilst we're driving. Firstly get that winter service done. I've got three to do. Most impotantly make sure your batteries and antifreeze are up to the job. Take a fully charged mobile phone and the garage/breakdown service number with you at all times! Think carefully about the route you're going to take. What are the roads like? -
Honda IMA 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The Office has acquired one as a new pool car. Spent some time with it and its ok actually. 1400cc with battery assist. (!) A Japanese made Honda well and solidly built, leather interior, climate and CD player as standard, as well as heated seats ! Plenty of room for four adults and a Star Treck dashboard. -
Computer Related Questions - Volume 56 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Working on my computer the other day I found that, while they produce a current for charging or powering devices connected to them, none of the 6 USB ports on my computer will handle signals or information. I connect my PDA to a port and the battery is charged but I cannot synchronise the information on it. I used Symantec Go-Back to take the computer back to a point in time where it was definitely working OK, but no result. I cannot use my printer, scanner or broadband despite reinstalling drivers etc. -
Astra diesel (Isuzu) cold starting probs 19 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Over the summer it had been fine, but coming through Autumn it was getting worse and worse. It would turn over fine for ages, but just not catch, then the battery would die and that was that. When it did start, it would run like a dog for at least two minutes with masses of smoke out of the back. However, switching it off and starting it again was no problem at all when the engine was even the slightest bit warm. -
Scenic intermittent (aagh!) electrical 3 Jan 2004 (Forum)
These effects happen at 'random' in different locations so I don't think it's IR interference(?) I don't have a spare keyfob to try (£150 each!) but will get one if needed. I'll get a new battery for existing one, but I don't think the remote is the problem. Anyone had a similar experience with megane/scenic? I just know a dealer will fail to find this intermittent fault, but it's going to strand me or my wife at some point miles from anywhere... -
Dead Fuel Injection Pump? 17 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I reconnected the tank but the engine sort of half spluttered but never actually fired. After flattening the battery, I left it on charge overnight. This morning, after similar rather disappointing splutterings, I decided connect a plastic fuel tank I have directly into the fuel pump, the tank balancing rather precariously on the engine. -

rover 420 GSI (high Emissions) 6 Sep 2003 (Forum)
But I remember some years ago having a MG EFI montego and these used to suffer from blowing the earth pin inside the ECU, normally this was easy to repair, (I use to be a TV & Video Technician so I have all the skills with the soldering iron), I wondered if this ECU suffers from the same problems, I know the Montego one could be done buy using a battery charger. The montego suffered very similar problems, very high fuel consumption, erratic idle etc and same again the sensor voltage were all floating. Any help would be welcome. Regards Ken -

Mondeo Cold start 27 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I have also noticed on the Diesel pump their is 2 cables one of which is the accelerator and the other seems to go down to a module below the battery, this cable doesn't seem to work from cold or when ever the car is placed in reverse, apparently this could be a system that picks up the revs when reverse is selected or a waxstat? either way I havn't got a clue... -
Ducati left on the grid 21 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Asked me to help him get it started as it had stood in his garage for three months without being fired up. First step was to remove the battery and charge. The engine spun over afterwards with no signs of starting. Petrol in the tank but topped it up with another half gallon. Removed both spark plugs and they were virtually as new due to a full service he had before laying it up. -
Family Car recommendations 23 May 2002 (Forum)
I was a very happy bunny! All a bit spooky though. This is now our main car. Mark 1 gathering dust and flat batteries in our garage. I am in my 40's, my wife is in her 30's and we have 2 kids 6 and 1.5 years old. My wife is expecting number 3 in July. Tried a double buggy but as expected it will not fit in the Golf 2 boot. -
Sporty Coupe 21 Jan 2002 (Forum)
In a few weeks the Golf that she isn't really entitled to but is driving anyway is due to go back to the leasing company. It's kept the tyres from flat-spotting, the brake discs clean and the battery charged. I was hoping to reintroduce her to the diesel AX which I am driving, but even when I suggested upgrading it to a diesel Saxo or Xsara HDi or something that I would call "sensible and economical", she fixed me with a gimlet glare that I rightly interpreted as "no way on God's earth am I going to go back to the AX after using the Golf". -
Car Alarms 7 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I was on holiday in France recently and visited a local town, I parked in the town square and locked my car using the remote keyfob which locks the doors and turns on the alarm. On return the car would not open using the keyfob so I got some new batteries, no joy. I could open the car using the key and start it but the alarm was in full swing by then. I phoned the RAC who said that they could not respond as the car would start, they gave the details of a nearby garage. -

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large motor mount prying tool that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end without the handle. BATTERY ELECTROLYTE TESTER: A handy tool for transferring sulfuric acid from a battery to the inside of your toolbox after determining that your battery is dead as a doornail, just as you thought. Finally got a long drive in the Superb iV 27 May 2021 (Forum)
Looking at the eco display when we got home showed the car had run 14% of the 430 mile return trip on battery, not bad when we started off with zero miles, shows it recoups a fair bit of power. Comparing that figure to the mpg we got from the 1.4 TSi manual the first time we did the trip is a good comparison. -
Three more test drives - Lexus, Peugeot and Skoda 27 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Excellent performance: softer suspension than my Q2 but as a consequence rather roly-poly handling. The battery was fully charged, and the electric motor was clearly contributing, but even selecting Electric mode it wouldn't run on electric power alone. I've no idea - nor had the unimpressive salesman - whether this was a feature of the model or faulty French electrics. -
FIAT Grande Punto - Fiat GPunto starting problem, glow plugs 13 May 2014 (Forum)
Could this somehow be a consequence of me starting the car in a wrong way in my first month after bying? What are the possible problems caused by such a start? 4. Could it be a problem with the battery in some way? Say, it gives weak charge to glow plugs? I had a battery go flat once when I was away for 6 weeks and had to jump start it. But I am driving actively these days, and the starting problem is there. -
Peugeot 306 1.9 D - electrical / starting problem 3 Mar 2012 (Forum)
When I had time to investigate more thoroughly the following day I checked all the fuses is both the fuse boxes (in the engine compartment near the battery, and under the drivers-side console), but all were fine. I then checked the battery (which was only replaced a few months ago) and that also appears to be charged and in full working order. I tried a number of things to narrow the problem down but was getting non-deterministic results (i.e. -
BMW X5 E53 SUV (2000 - 2007) - Advice needed re: used vehicle 18 Jul 2009 (Forum)
However, these things happen. However, I had to call out BMW assist 4 days after getting the car due to a battery problem, and at this time I was notified of an issue with the car (don't really want to go into too much detail) that really should have been picked up before I bought it. I considered rejecting the car (and still am) although was happy to give the dealer the benefit of the doubt and try and sort out the problem as the vehicle ticked every box I had.
