Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 2.8 Exhaust white smoke after 2 months left sta 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My first post: I need to sell my beloved VW Passat 4motion but it has been SORN off road for a couple of months - I have started it every 2 or 3 weeks for a few minutes during its time on the driveway but today when I checked its battery was flat. It started immediately with jump leads but there was a fair bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust at all revs. I thought it might clear as the engine warmed but 15 minutes later it was still there (including 5 mins at 3000 revs). -
Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 86 1905 Puzzling Mi16 cold idle problem HELP! 6 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Once warmed up it seems to idle fine if a little high. I have ruled out the idle speed control valve because it works if I connect it directly to the battery, but when connected to the car it just hums. I've checked the voltage to the idle valve and it reads 12v. The problem seems to be the switching of the idle control valve. For some reason it isn't getting the right signal to turn on or off. -

The car has been recently service and passed the MOT three days ago. It had a new alternator fitted about three years ago and we had a new battery not long after that as the failing alternator had damaged the existing one. We are getting sick of this car, two clutches and a gear box last year thanks to a bad recovery driver forcing the car into gear, alternator, two front sets of tyres, engine difficult to work on. -

Renault Laguna II (2001 - 2007) - 01 1.9 Cleaned EGR valve but now... 21 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have put the valve back in correctly - it can only really go in one way reconnected the electric plug into the back of it etc nothing seems to be amiss but the limp home mode is on all the time - Before i take a match to it does anyone have any ideas? I disconnected the battery whilst i did the job - took around 1.5 hrs and i did use quite a bit of WD40 around the valve to get it out - could that have caused a short somewhere? Thanks for any help rec,d Harv -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0tdci Won't start; flashing glow plug light 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Got it going again, drove around the estate a few times but stalled again. Would'nt start so left overnight. Next morning would'nt start, battery getting low, called out AA who checked fuel to rail, ok good pressure and a slight pulse to glo plug electronic leads. Tried different key still did'nt start, put on diagnostic machine faults found P0191 fuel rail pressure, P0204 injector CR, P0340 cam sensor (twice) and P8888 control pressure injector and finally P1000 manufacturers specified fault. -
Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 02 2.0 Low on power/exhaust smoke suddenly appeari 16 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Unfortunately the wrench I had was not big enough for the housing top,so I reconnected the fuel leads etc The car started and idled over without any problem so at this time I decided to use a charge and start cable (I have never used this before) to boost the battery on another car. During this time the 307 started to blow smoke from the exhaust - it has never done this before There are no fault codes and showing and I cannot see how the charge and start cable has caused this problem So I have 2 questions : 1) according to Haynes it is almost impossible to unscrew the filter top without damaging the housing. -
Complaint against a windscreen company. 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
At the same time, which I checked with the garage, he left my car ignition on and drained my car battery. It now wont hold a charge. I know the damage to the door seal etc was not done by the thieves who did the damage to my glass as inspected the vehicle in te garage a day after the incident. Question, as I was not there when the work was done, have I a leg to stand on if I complain to them? -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 98 1.5D Removing sheared nut on glow plug 11 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Just another point- I know a couple of people elsewhere on this site have suggested you can just run on three plugs but typically this plug is the nearest to the battery and the top part of the glow plug (where the cables slip on) also shear away with the holding nut so I cannot even re-attach the cables to run one old plug with the three new ones!!! Is there tool someone can suggest that will grip the central spinal rather than the nut? -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1996 1.4 RN Auto Start Problems 11 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, My partners Clio 1.4 Auto has developed an annoying and very intermittent starting problem. Basically, sometimes it just will not start, it turns over fine and has a good strong battery and most of the time, it starts at the turn of the key, almost beating the key! Once started, it runs without fault, no weak idle or stalling etc. I've changed the distributor cap, rotor arm, Coil, ignition leads and cleaned and checked the plugs. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 93 1.6 Immobiliser saga 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Just in case anyone knows, is that faint glow a sign of trouble storing itself up? Is something burning out? Might the battery go flat? Does the continuous glow of the alarm LED in the car run the electrics down faster than the brief flashes when it it behaving properly, or does an LED use too little juice to matter? It's a hassle putting the fuse back because you have to unscrew a facia panel to get at it. -

Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 96 1.9dt Strange starting problem 14 Mar 2008 (Forum)
this problem can be when its hot, cold, been 1 day or 1 minute since it was last started, it simply doesnt matter, the engine just turns over and over and over, until the battery is flat, or it finally decides to start! I have checked the injectors and when it wont start they are getting zero fuel, not a drop. i have listened for the stop actuator and i can hear and feel it click when power is sent to it (although I cant hear it return when power is turned off). -

Porsche Boxster 986 + Boxster S (1996 - 2004) - Aftermarket HID headlights 28 Sep 2007 (Forum)
They are woefully inadequate (as were the stock ones) on country lanes at night with full beams on. I'd like to upgrade to HID and am confident I could fit the basic (non battery lead) kit myself, however wouldn't I need 2 kits as the full beam performance is inadequate on country lanes @ night, or would the dipped beam HID provide enough light to prop up the full beam performance? -
Car has vanished into thin air! 29 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The car is all legal and wasn't parked on yellow lines or anything like that, although it was on an unlit country road on a large sweeping bend, parked just before a width restriction. There's no way the car could have been driven, it was as dead as they get (my dad flattened the battery in some vain hope it would start) so if it has indeed been stolen it would have to be towed. I find it hard to believe the car has been stolen (who would nick a 13 year 405? with a knackered engine?) -
Electric Parking Brakesn- Devils Work? 30 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The experience has left me very worried about future trends - it seems to me that more new cars are being fitted with these infernal devices. Besides being horrid to use they must drain the battery (which damages fuel economy as the alternator is loaded by the recharging) In my view they not only make driving less safe, but will have serious effects in a few years time on older cards when they begin to fail. -
*** HELP Merc C320 (2002) Wipers *** 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I've been thru them in my warranty period and they will simply replace anything which doesn't seem to be working. They have replaced my comand three times for a battery failure problem and later found out that it was something else. (My view: totally illiterate & inefficient non-professionals; greedy of money) Please help me if you can. If you are a merc pro; i'm sorry as I don't want to hurt individuals. -
1987 Renault 5 ... cutting-out 17 Jan 2006 (Forum)
This week the AA man (a new one) couldn't find any charge by the coil at all so ran a lead from the battery to get me home and there my Renault sits. This AA man suggests it is the ignition switch. But is it? They've asked me if there is something that disables the charge and both of them tried hitting various parts of the car (quite amusing methodology).
