  • Which engined A4 (choice of 2) 13 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have now decided to get SWMBO the A4 Avant that she has been eyeing up for some time (chiefly because used V40s and Golf Estates are the sme sort of price) and think that I have narrowed it down to 2: P reg 1.9tdi (110 bhp) 60k miles £7.5k S reg 1.8 SE 47k miles £8.5k The diesel being £1k cheaper might swing it for me but would appreciate any thoughts that the BR might have. Mileage that will be covered will not be huge and I anticipate keeping the car for quite/very long time.
  • Why would Lay-by's be closed? 9 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Last night, driving home down the A3(M) I noticed that all (apart from one which is set back from the road near butser hill) the lay-by's were coned off both north and south, over 15 miles plus. The signs were covered over with black bags and tape and a higher than normal police presence was apparent (two cars travelling down the A3, and a collection around the bottom of the M275) Is this due to the Arms fair in London or may be a visiting digitary?
  • MOT emissions query 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Comparing the emissions figures with last year, I see that it's taking a turn for the worse (2002 figures in brackets) Fast Idle Test CO - 0.18% (0.02%) HC - 49 ppm (25ppm vol) Lambda - 1.01 (1.000) Natural Idle Test CO - 0.03 (0.01) Is there anything I can read into this? Imminent catastrophe? Or is it just a "wear and tear" thing? The car had just been on a 90 mile motorway journey immediately prior to being dropped off today, and has covered 19,500 miles since last year.
  • Peugeot 306 HDI handbook 15 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Just acquired a T-reg (1999) Peugeot 306 Estate with the HDI engine. Went to Halfords to buy a technical handbook, but the Haynes one, which claims to cover all models of the 306 up to T/1999 does NOT include the HDI engine. As you'd expect, the owner's handbook is sparse, to say the least. I shall feel a bit insecure without any know-how when I take the car abroad soon.
  • VW Headlamp/Switch 16 Nov 2001 (Forum)
VW do not accept any responsibility despite a recall in Sept 97 for the wiring loom (which was done prior to us buying the car). The most recent switch to burn out did so within 12 months of the previous one which had been replaced under warranty so VW say the replacement is not covered by the warranty and we must pay for it.
  • Peugeot 206 paper oil filter 16 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I am reluctant to force the element any further in case the plastic body is damaged in some way. This type of filter must be fairly new (the car is one year old), as it is not covered in the Haynes manual, which has just come out this year for the 206. Bob
  • Timing Belts - Again! 16 Jun 2001 (Forum)
On modern genenerally reliable cars, the biggest potential serious failure is a broken timing belt. I often have nightmares about the potential bill. Our Saxo's have a belt changed at 40,000 miles despite Citreon's assurance that these are good for double that milage.
  • Vauxhall Cascada - Clutch Burnout in under 19,000 miles? 3 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I am half thinking, did the dealer I got the car off swap the clutch out for a crappy one and thats why I got such a good deal on the car? Has another part caused this meaning it should be covered under warrenty? Was this actually me?  MY thoughts are if this was me, I dont deserve my licence and shouldnt be driving a blinking car if I can burn a clutch out in under 19,000 miles (granted the first 5k werent me).
  • Does your car have adaptive cruise/brake assist? 23 Jun 2022 (Forum)
If in a car park for instance, parking with the nose as close as possible to a wall.
  • Hyundai i40 - Hyundai i40 Clutch Problems 5 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I have had many cars over the years, all from new, and most have covered this mileage and more, with no problems with the clutch whatsoever. Can't help but say I am disappointed, shame really, as I feel this has spoilt what has otherwise been a good car.
  • Best Car for Mileage Tax Purposes . 31 May 2017 (Forum)
As the car would be used for business use I can claim back 45p per mile against tax ( 45p covers the cost of fuel, insurance , repairs ) . I am looking for the best Tax Write off Mileage option ( effiecincy / reliabilty) not too fussed about the speed as I rarely go over 65 mph on the motorway .
  • Toughest car ever made 4 Oct 2016 (Forum)
There's a small dealer local to me selling a 1990 Mercedes 250D in poverty spec with low miles that is tempting me to open my wallet. But question is. What was the most robust car ever built? What would you buy if you could only run one car from now on?
  • SEAT Leon ST - Advice needed - Buying a car that smells of smoke 27 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I think they'll probably make it smell ok by using air freshner, but the smell might come back, leaving me with a smelly car. The obvious answer is to get something else but there dont seem to be many of these around in my price range. Any advice about whether its possible to completely get rid of smoke? Have I got a case for asking for reducing the price to cover the risk of the smell coming back?
  • Any/Any - Disappearing tax (VED!) disc implications 5 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Are the government going to pocket the value of a car being taxed twice every time a car is sold on? The remaining road fund licence is no longer going to be transferable with the sale of the vehicle - so if you sell your car, presumably you’ll get a refund for complete unused months, but the buyer will tax the vehicle covering the month of purchase?
  • Ford Focus - Rejecting a car after it developed a bad odour? 20 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Hi, I purchased a used Focus (58 plate) from a main dealer at the end of October 2011, and recently it's started smelling of smoke, neither me or my partner smoke or anyone we know smokes, and we don't let anyone in the car who smokes, so it must have been the previous owner, and the dealership tried to cover it up with some odour eliminator or something. If I'd smelt it when I went to buy it, I would have instantly rejected the car!
  • Nissan Almera Tino 1.8 SVE 2003 - Excessive Oil Usage 18 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Bought this car from a main dealer in 2006 with just 15K on the clock. 4 months later when my wife was on the motorway she got a low oil warning. It went to another Nissan dealer who topped up the oil and the original dealer apologised and covered the cost.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 petrol - Dropping out of gear 16 Dec 2011 (Forum)
We have a 2005 1.6 Zetec Focus. Had the car for about 6 years and covered 36K and always serviced by my excellent local ford dealer. Recently (6 months) the car has been dropping out of second gear intermittantly. It goes in easy enough no noise or problems, first and reverse engage without problems.
  • Vauxhall Astra - thinking of sc***ping your car ? 29 May 2010 (Forum)
i recently sc***ped our old astra we tried lots of popular companies and the main ones who say "we buy any car" .com, but we found out to our dismay that they dont, it was in a bad way all the tyres were flat or bald and it had been through the wars dent wise, water was mixing with oil in the engine block so it wasn't a runner anymore, in the end this site was recommended by a neighbour of ours and they were good, http://www.sc***-my-car-wales.co.uk/ not only did we get £80 for the astra but we got a certificate saying the car had been sc***ped in the mail a few days later :D not only in Wales either they are now covering SW England too.
  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - 00 2.1 oil pipe broken, now no acceleration 13 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Grand. Diesel. 75000 miles. My oil pipe broke last sunday covering the underside and rear of the car in oil; I got the car home (2 miles, most probably should'nt have); oil pipe now repaired and car goes (can get to 70mph slowly) but no no acceleration to speak of and decelarates going up hill.
  • Changing my car, but which one? 23 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I currently have a Mazda RX-8, which I bought in May last year. Love it, fantastic car! The problem is, 3 weeks ago I've gone from working 12miles from my home to about 75! I'm getting expensed, which just about covers the cost of the fuel/oil but I don't think the RX-8 is the kind of car you put 500 miles/week on and run into the ground.
