Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 1999 1.8t Low coolant temperature at high speed 30 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Fitted with standard viscous-coupled fan and electric fan. All completely normal at town speeds. At high speed, the coolant temp falls to the bottom of the guage. After a bit of experimentation this turns out to be engine speed related. Anything above 3800rpm for any length of time and the temp falls rapidly. Reduce engine speed for a few minutes and all returns to normal. -
Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 02 2.0 HDi 110 Loss of coolant. 24 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My 2002 Citroen C5 Diesel 2.0 HDI 110 has suddenly starting losing coolant, about a pint every 100 miles or so. There are no visible signs either of a radiator or hose/connection leak, or of stains on the ground. The car has done 68,000 miles. I asked my local garage (not a Citroen dealer) to have a look whilst it was being MOTed and he could not find anything- it behaved normally under an overnight pressure test. -

Morris 1800, Volvo 740 coolant loss 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Many years ago when a teen-ager, I can remember that my dad's Morris 1800 "land-crab" suffered from a problem when you finished driving and the engine was hot, when the engine was turned off the coolant overflowed in copious quantities and had to be topped up before the next journey could be started. I cannot remember what the fix was - this is going back to about 1974. I've now come across an aquaintance who has the same problem with a Volvo 740 (petrol engined too). -
Ford Fusion - Engine overheating 21 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Please can anyone suggest my best way forwards. My engine seems to be overheating as the coolant boils out of expansion tank and makes a mess. I tried a test this morning with a cold engine and coolant refilled to the maximum mark: 1) Started cold engine - still no leaks from anywhere after 15 minutes 2) Attached OBD reader to see temperature with engine running 3) Waited for temperature to rise and cooling fan to kick in 4) Thermostat appears to open okay as hose to radiator becomes hot 5) Temperature got to 101, still no fan, coolant starting to rise in the expansion tank 6) Decided to switch off engine - did so - fan suddenly kicked for just a few seconds 7) Restarted engine - temperature 99 - no response from fan 8) Coolant becomes increasingly agitated and then boils out of expansion tank making a big mess - but still no leaks from anywhere else I do not know what to suspect first - any ideas would be gratefully received Many thanks :-) -
Vauxhall Astra GTC - Only one symptom for blown head gasket? 20 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Hi all, My coolant tank keeps cracking and then leaking. The car NEVER overheats cause i keep filling the coolant. I had new WATERPUMP, THERMOSTAT, 3X COOLANT TANK AND CAP. I dont have any of the other symptoms of a blown head gasket, but i think the increased pressure keeps cracking my coolant tanks. -
Ford Fiesta - Water Reservoir 27 Jul 2012 (Forum)
My wifes 2003 Fieta 1.4 Ghia may have a problem. I've been topping the water reservoir up every week or so with coolant as it appears to have little left in it. We stopped today somewhere and I smelt hot water/coolant and saw the red liquid all over the floor. When I checked the screw reservoir cap it appeared cross threaded, so I'd obviously some how put it on wrong last time? -
Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - PD 115 BHP - coolant loss 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have to travel on a 400 mile round trip early tomorrow (100% motorway) and I am wondering if I should risk it? I have arranged a coolant system pressure/leakage check at my local garage on Friday. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem and if you would risk the journey? Thanks for any advice. -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1997 1.9 Black oil in the Coolant reservoir. 19 Jul 2008 (Forum)

Coolant leak - Seat Toledo TdiSE 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Unfortunately when I do my regular long distance runs of 220 miles twice or three times weekly, the coolant level goes from the maximum line to the minimum line after each 220 mile trip. No oil lost just coolant. ( it still does near 60 mpg). My local main Seat dealer has now given up searching for leaks. -
Clio coolant leak 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Just bought a low mileage L reg Clio from garage. Took it back straight away as clearly had coolant leak. Garage did pressure test and said "No it didn't". Had to drive a fair distance away and found coolant still being lost. Took it to the nearest Renault garage who diagnosed a "loose bolt just above the water pump; it's tightened and alright now". -
Chevrolet Aveo - Coolant Loss, Engine light, Warranty etc 26 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I drove on for another year topping it up - Approx a litre or so over the year. Left it to independent garage for 2nd service and got them to check coolant. They found nothing but I fear they are incompetent if not a little crooked as you'll see. Drove the car for another few months before I noticed creamy light brown mayo under oil filler cap and the coolant tank empty. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 1.8 coolant leak spraying from metal pipe 1 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I have found a coolant leak on my Mk3 Golf Cabriolet 1.8. I had topped up the coolant last weekend after the warning light came on and when it relit on Wednesday after refilling Sunday I was starting to think coolant was leaking into the head gasket. -
Corsa B 1.2 C12NZ - Corsa B - Low power after head gasket replacement 28 Aug 2021 (Forum)
So the other week I changed my head gasket and timing belt as I had all the classic symptoms; milky coolant., white exhaust, low coolant. I changed the gasket and timing belt, as well as flushing the coolant and the engine seems happy. The idle rpm is stable and sounds normal. HOWEVER, it definitely still hasn't got all the power it used to (not that there was much to begin with). -
Renault Clio 1.2TCE - White smoke, sudden onset 22 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Neighbour's car, 85,000 miles. Losing coolant. Tiny bit of condensation mayonnaise on cap but none elsewhere (as far as one can see inside) and the oil looks OK. Coolant looks OK too. Engine sounds fine and the 'smoke' smells like steamy coolant, not burning oil. -
Vauxhall insignia 1.8 - Coolant loss bad mpg 22 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Hi all, so I recently purchased a Vauxhall insignia 1.8 2010. Really happy with it until error code 3 app reads on the dash (low coolant) I did a bit of research and found two common problem relating to this. One being a cracked header tank with I have replaced. The other is the egr/cooler. Which also could cause bad mpg. I’m currently getting 21 when google says I should be getting 37 I think. -
Ford Focus - Ford Focus 1.0 ecoboost coolant fault 19 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I had to call the AA yesterday when smoke / steam started billowing from my engine. Turns out the coolant pipe had burst, which I'm told, could have had a bigger impact on my engine. On checking FordETIS website, turns out there's a recall on my vehicle, and has been since April 2015. I didn't buy the car until August 2016. -
2006 FIAT Panda 4x4, 1.2, 8V - Non interferance engine? Fiat Panda 4X4 1.2, 8v 16 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Is the water pump driven from the cambelt? Q3. What are the intervals on coolant change? There is no reference to it in the service book. Q4. What type of coolant is required? It currently has the original “red” coolant. Q5. -
Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 98 1.4i Slow coolant loss 17 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I suspect the head gasket is beginning to go on my son's car as it needs half a litre of coolant every hundred or so miles. It's done 120,000 and there is no sign of a leak anywhere else. The dipstick is still pure oil but there is a bit of hard mayonnaise on the oil filler cap. My question is, is it worth trying something like Holts radweld at this stage...or just wait for the inevitable progression? -
Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - Petrol SRi 140 Coolant loss 23 Sep 2007 (Forum)
hi, i have a 1998 vectra sri 140. the problem is a water leak from the coolant system. there is a black valve looking thing, to the right of the engine bay as you look at it, near the top. in which three water hoses go into, with a small pipe coming out of the top of it. the water is shooting out from the sides of this valve near the top, from little square holes, but only when the engine is hot. this has never happened before..could something inside this valve?
