Mechanical sympathy 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My brother and I are at odds over the way we drive. I tend to concentrate on making my driving smooth, particularly when changing gear and braking, and he insists that this will lead to more wear and tear on the clutch and brakes. He, on the other hand, tends to make his gearchanges abrupt, saying that just dropping the clutch in means no clutch slipping. -

Primera 1.6 1997 hesitates 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have recently fitted a new cap and rotor bought from Nissan - Had trouble finding a copy. The hesitation remains. I am living with it at the moment by driving under 3500 rpm. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Ian -
Roadworks again 19 Jan 2006 (Forum)
What is it with road repairs/fixing pipes. From what I have seen driving about they never seem to fix the problem first time. Driving to work this morning joined nice long traffic jam. Only to discover that there is a set of temporary lights again at the same junction to fix the same bit of road/pipes. -
Broken down, but "No Parking" 18 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Seeing someone broken down and waiting on double yellow lines for the breakdown man made me wonder what the legal position might be in similar circumstances. Suppose you are driving along next to an active bus-lane, when your car cuts out or suffers a flat tyre. Do you: a) stop in the middle of the road and call the breakdown service b) ditto, but attempt a repair or change the wheel c) pull over into the bus lane and block it while awaiting assistance or changing the wheel d) drive (if possible) on a flat tyre until you find somewhere you can park legally? -
I might be buying a 1998 'S' 1.0 VW Polo 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
But...I have been told by the owner that there are some bumper scratches on the front and rear, caused by his wife reversing, then driving into at a later date, a bush on their drive. How deep/serious should they be to make me walk away? Also, I think I can detect a bit of rust on the front right wheel arch in the picture. Has this car been bashed more than the owner says? -
Weather forecast for a whole journey? 30 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Knowing the forecast tommorow is predicting black ice (because of rain falling onto frozen roads I understand), and also knowing I have an important meeting 130 miles away I started wondering...... Is there a website that gives you an accurate forecast of the weather you are likly to be driving though on a complete journey. I can go to the BBC weather website and put in a town or postcode but I will be doing a jaunt on the M3, M25 and M23 so this is not so relevant. Also just before Christmas I have a drive from East Sussex all the way to the Highlands of Scotland (again, weather permitting). -
transfer of cherished plate please help 10 Oct 2005 (Forum)
bought a car 10th September with private plate. previous seller has not informed dvla that he has sold the car. sent v62 into dvla which they received 21/09 they have on 29/9 put the plate on retention for the previous owner. dvla have advised I cannot drive the car as the tax disc is cancelled and I cant get new plates as I dont have V5. 03 Leon for £7000? 7 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Hi there. i'm after some swift advice. I'm going for a 2nd test drive of the above car tommorrow and after being most unhappy with the build and drive of my vectra C. the leon in 03 with 13k and its the 1.8 20v SE all the bits and bob's (cassette player like) my reasons for changing are the bouncey ride of the vectra horrible gear box, and no feel and slightly lacking performance (1.8) for the weight of the car. -
VW Golf VR6 - Big-end 31 May 2005 (Forum)
The mechanic told me that it would be cheaper to buy another engine rather than repair mine - could this be true? I need to drive it every day for work and as i haven't got £1000 spare at the moment to get the work done - is this advisable? Do big-end bearings just let go all of a sudden, or is it gradual, as i need to drive it every day for work. -
Banger part-ex? 27 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Am i right in thinking that assuming it was the previous owner, he or she part exchanged this scruffy 205 for a BMW in at a rather upmarket BMW dealer in west London? Mind you things happen for a reason i suppose, a pay rise? -- Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-) -

premature breakdowns 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I've been driving volvo cars for a number of years now. My car at the moment is a S80 T6, I thought it was my dream car, expensive(for me anyway)6months old,10,000 miles on clock, pristine condition. Within a week I was having trouble with central locking - car taken back to garage to be sorted, Then driving on M275 car died, transported back to garage. -

primera p11-144 sport+ 10 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I have got a droneing sound coming from my car that is driving me nuts,i have had both front wheel bearings replaced & both rear hub bearings replaced. But still the noise is there,it seems to be there most of the time & is most notable above 40 mph,it also increases in noise/drone when on a smooth tarmac road, the vehicle has also being tracked & has had new front tyres. The car drives great otherwise with no vibration from the steering or car in general, just this awful drone, which does appear to be comeing from the rear drivers side area, any advice would be greatly appreciated to this costly headache££££££££. -

Insured to the nearest minute? 8 Dec 2004 (Forum)
The insurer wanted to know not only what day I was changing the car, but also the exact time - I was warned that this was important and if I was incorrect I would not be covered (horrible image of being delayed en route to collect new car and finding myself driving without insurance, or being unable to drive old car to dealer to collect replacement). I've never encountered this before, is it usual? The sting in the tail came when I was told it would cost a further £219 to insure the car for the remaining 5 months of the existing policy's life. -
405 1.9TD - Lumpy Idle 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I'm reluctant to think its compression a)because i can't bear to and b) because it seems to have loads of poke when driving. Could it be valve clearances? I'd really appreciate some help on this as it's driving me up the wall! Thanks a lot
