  • Final Car 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Am downsizing from a 2-0ltr Vectra to a 1-6ltr Astra (yes I know the general opinions on Vauxhall but I have a first class local agent and a good rapport with their staff.)I have chosen the Club model it has no ABS to go wrong green tinted glass(it stands on drive so I dont want the trim fading)I have chosen the no cost option of an alectric sun roof in place of the standard Air/Con,and finally it has the same radio as in the Vectra ie takes tapes of which I have plenty instead of CDs. I am the octogenarian from how old are you and feel I will be leaving my wife a car with less expensive things to go wrong but adequate for the purpose. What does the forum think? ndbw

  • Starting probs 25 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Anyway - I got the battery checked out (car is about 5.5 yrs old) and it was a bit ropey so I got a new one and I'll see if that fixes the problem - question is do the starting probs sound battery related - why would flooring the accelerator help?
  • Damp Starts 11 Nov 2002 (Forum)
But after 10 minutes or so the car runs perfectly again and is very responsive. Are there any checks or replacements I can perform to alleviate the problem? I recently replaced the spark plugs, but the HT leads are 5 years old now - could they be replaced?
  • Upgrading car alarms 17 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I've recently bought a Golf gti mk2 & am thinking of changing the alarm\immobiliser for a few reasons (old kit, only have 1 key fob for each). So, can anyone recommend any of the current alarm\immobiliser's? Also, i guess i will have to get a thatcham category alarm for insurance purposes. Does this have to be fitted by a "qualified" fitter?
  • Seats for a MK2 punto 3 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I recently bought a new punto it's one of the more basic spec models and as it is a lower spec the seats offer very little support. I am interested in buying some seats from a sporting or the HGT version of the car. So, does anyone know where i'd be able to find these seats. ie, specialised fiat breakers etc. I assume that crash damaged cars end up somewhere for dismantling.... All the scrap yards I have found so far deal with cars which are around 6 years old.
  • Inflation and car prices 31 Dec 2001 (Forum)
This relates back to a post a few days ago by Alvin about the Moris Minor he bought for £410 in 1961 and a VW Beetle for £624 in 1964. - also the article in the Telegraph today on the Fiesta being 25 years old. Looking at the rise in Retail Price Index since 1961(a factor of 13.625) and 1964(12.37) the Minor would cost £5586 and VW £7718 at todays prices. Given the much higher spec of today's cars they must be better value now.
  • Daewoo prices 12 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Who'd buy a car straight from Daewoo when it can be bought so much cheaper elsewhere. Also it must have a horrific effect on used values of 1-2 year old Daewoos... Can the Joe Public Esq. buy these cars direct from the importers at these ridiculously low prices?
  • mmm multipla jtd - injector 18 Jul 2001 (Forum)
After looking around for many months for a mpv to transport 4 kids & kaboodle i've just bought a 9 month old jtd105 and am very pleased - great to drive, park, cruise, and incredibly practical and frugal. One small problem - the injector warning light illuminates intermittently and the manual states that the car should only be driven under low revs and for shor distances with the light on. - Stopping the car and restarting seems to cure the problem and when I return the car to the garage next week it is 100% certain that the problem will not arise and therefore not come up on the diagnostics.
  • Salvage Value of (Cat C?) Car 24 Jan 2017 (Forum)
A friend’s car is over ten years old. His car has been written off as it needs two new n/s doors after someone drove out of a side road without stopping. The other driver, and his insurance company, have accepted liability.
  • (my) Autotrader gems 25 Aug 2022 (Forum)
The Minilight style wheels and old school 'spots' set it off nicely!. Don't think you are losing out on too much practicality going for the saloon either, the rear seats fold completely flat on all classic shape 900's.
  • Nissan Almera 2001 SE+ - Insurance claim / repairs - Advice please. :) 31 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Hi all, Newbie here, hoping I can get some advice please? :) Basically, my lovely old car became a cropper with a police car last week! (If you are going to have your first car accident you have to do it in style eh? LOL!) FYI, the bumper, bonnet and a light are damaged, no internal / chassis damage.
  • SAAB - SAAB 93, good opportunity or bad idea? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have a new chap going to join our company soon. When it comes to company cars we tend to buy nearly new / 1 year old to miss out on the worst depreciation and get a nicer car for the guy sat in it for the next 100k miles plus. Looking at 'the usual suspects' of cars such as Mondeo's, I have noticed that only one of the three main car supermarkets (Motorpoint) I normally look at have any 08/58 plate Mondeos, (Trade Sales and Car Giant are the others, our company is in the South East), but there are a lot of SAAB 93's.
  • Honda Civic Sport 1.5 - Electric brake failure 22 Nov 2021 (Forum)
I've got a 68 plate Honda Civic. A week ago I was parked in a local car park with 2 12 year old girls sat in the back. I left the keys in the ignition and left for 5 minutes to go to the shop. I was parked on quite a slope! As I walked back to the car 5 minutes later, I witnessed it rolling down and hit a low brick wall, causing £3400 of damage to the car!
  • What is the most badge-engineered car ever? 21 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Prompted by the recent thread about badge snobbery, I was wondering which car design has been subject to the most extensive badge-engineering. By badge-engineering I mean selling cars of identical or near-identical designs under different brands. My contender for the most extensively badge-engineered car of all time is that BMC ADO16 - the old 1100/1300.
  • Choosing new car due to coming clean air zone 18 Mar 2019 (Forum)
The new legislation would mean I pay £8 a day to drive through the city centre tunnels, the best route for me to the M6. diesel cars from 2015 (euro6) and petrol cars from 2005 (euro4) are exempt from this tax. My commute to my place of work is 150 miles round trip so for a long time I've had diesel cars, however I was thinking of possibly getting an old 05/06 car and getting it converted to LPG.
  • Buying my first car - need advice 6 Jan 2010 (Forum)
The car will be insured under my 30 year old girlfriends name so its not going to cost much to insure. I'm currently looking at 2005 1.6L honda civics and vw golfs - 3 door preferably, with under 100000km on the clock.
  • How much to spend on a car - how to decide? 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I'm just intrigued by how people decide how much to spend on a motor car. I am reminded by the old chestnut of the man who goes into a car showroom for an Astra; he has £2,000 to spend. Salesman says 'I've one coming in tomorrow at £1,500'; man says 'too cheap'. Later in the week he receives a call offering him an Astra for £2,000 which he acepts.
  • Audi 80 E-reg, cat puzzle 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Any thoughts? Since the car is quite old I presume it doesn't have to have the cat fitted? cheers Rob
  • Will car prices tumble due to petrol.... 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I dont know about others, but I am cost conscious when changing the family car every three years.I dont have pots of dosh to spend, have domestic commitments as priority, and buy a reliable saloon thats in good condition and three years old from new. With petrol £1 per litre, there is a possibility that it could go to £1.50 ( so I am told in motoring mags).
