  • Peugeot 406 warning light 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
From what little information I have been able to get this light can cover a multitude of engine problems. Is there anything obvious I can try (I'v tried diconecting then reconnecting the battery) or will it require a diagnostics test? If it does require a diagnostics test do I have to go to a dealer or are there mobile testers out there Thanks again for your help,an advise
  • Mondeo 1.8TDi - Drivebelt or alternator? 20 Jan 2007 (Forum)
For the last month or so I have been getting a squeal from the alternator belt when pulling away, especially on a cold engine. (I know, I should have seen to it earlier). Just pulled up at home and the battery light has come on and wouldn't go out. On lifting the bonnet the belt is whirring merrily round but the alternator pulley is stationary. There is at least 1/2" slack in the belt, is this enough to stop it turning the alternator or am I looking at the possibility of a seized alternator?
  • engine quiting. Ford Puma 9 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Some times it would just die and I would be stuck in road for 5 minutes until it started back up. Doesn't seem to battery as lights are ok and connections look fine. You can hear fuel pump so I think the immobiliser is ok. No warning lights are on. Using the trip button trick I was able to get the following 2 error codes from the ECU 5967 and 0115.
  • Peugeot 406 indicating left by itself 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I took the cowling off the steering wheel but wasn't brave enough to remove the screws holding the cover on the black box thing. I also wondered whether a weak battery could cause these electrical maladies. It is the original (almost 6 years old) and the car does a lot of short journies. Any ideas gratefully received. I'll be visiting my trusted independent next week.
  • Diesel Starting Problems - pug 206 29 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I just about managed through last winter without major starting problems (avarage two turns of the key), but got the glow plugs replaced in January by a Pug Dealer. Anyway, is there an obvious solution to this problem, that would ease my winter worries (New battery perhaps), or should I expect the nightmare starts again. My fear being that the Pug will fair to start this year!!! Car has over 100K mostly motorway miles on the clock. A worried pug dealer, is there any other Kind?
  • 99 vectra fuse problem 26 Jul 2006 (Forum)
hi can anyone help me my vectra keeps blowing a 30 amp fuse in the engine compartment ,there is a fuse holder at the front of the engine next to the battery. inside there are two fuses green 30 amp and are quite big.one of them keeps blowing but not all of the time .i dont know if this has something to do with my air con as it normally goes when its on but not all of the time.i do know that it has some thing to do with the fans as the temp goes up sky high.so pop a new one in and the fans come on again. i did have the front fan ghanged as this was seized up .so was this front fan the air con fan....and could it be a differant fan than went on my car ,as i got it from a scrap yard... any suggestions why it keeps blowing.
  • glowplugs vw caravelle 2.4 d 18 Mar 2006 (Forum)
were having real trouble starting our bus on these cold mornings ,the colder it gets harder she is to start ,we think we must have a glow plug prob, the 50 amp fuse is fine and there is a good feed to this point ,the next problem is the glow plugs are a real swine to get to ,what is the easiest way to check them and how, any suggestions would be a great help ,once started shes fine all day but when left over night the problems begin, weve even had to tow her once because the battery drained trying to start her and within a matter of yards she started, its only started doing this in this very cold weather but if we leave her until later in the day when it warms up a bit she will start but with a struggle
  • 93 VW Golf 1.4 starting problem 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Come back later - starts on the button. On one occasion it died soon after starting but then restarted shortly afterwards. It had a new battery a couple of months ago, I invariably replace it just to ensure no problems later. I assume it is some electrical gizmo with an intermittent fault - one of those sensor thingies? Once they replaced dynamos with alternators I tended to lose the plot.
  • 1995 1.3SPi Mini won't start! 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1995 SPi Rover Mini Cooper, and she has somehow decided that she doesn't want to start. The battery is fully charged, it turns over but won't fire up. Have used a voltmeter to check that the full 12v is going to the coil. For some reason, there are no sparks coming from the HT lead from the coil into the distributor cap.
  • Electric Motorcars ? 11 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The Telegraph motoring section, Saturday Aug. 28, has an article on an Indian electric car called the Riva G-Wiz. It looks something like the Smart, but runs off batteries. I'm fairly sure that the car would satisfy the daily motoring needs of most of the backroomers. There is also a news announcement that Ford are recalling their electric 'Think' car, "...made for and shipped to the British and USA markets".
  • laguna engine failure? 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I topped up the tank with some water, about 1 pint, but it made no difference.Plenty of life in the battery, plenty of fuel, not sure what to do now. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I know a bit about cars but I am no expert. I have a Haynes manual but on this occasion it has been no use.
  • aargh cit ax 1litre jumping 2 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Its only a little 1 litre thing, 1995 ish. Anyway it keeps randomly stuttering as though not firing correctly. It was killing batteries when I first got it but I remedied that by fastening the alternator on properly and tightening a wire on it. Obviously not been correctly fitted. Now it seems to misfire occasionally, mainly in damp weather and after the engine is warm.
  • Handsfree Technology HF300 car kit 10 Oct 2004 (Forum)
This device was trailed in the Sunday Times on 3 October https://www.handsfreetechnology.co.uk/ , and is mounted on the metal posts of the driver's headrest, with a speaker next to the door and a boom-mounted microphone towards the middle of the car. Easily mounted/removed. Works off 3 x AA batteries which "could last six months". That's the good news. The bad news is it costs £99.99 "plus p&p" (amount unspecified), will need the mobile phone to be mounted somewhere (on the dashboard?) for use, and so a wire (supplied) will need to be run from the headrest to the phone, and there is no provision for charging the phone.
  • Ford Mondeo TDCi 13 Pin Electrical Kit 10 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Has anyone experience of having the Ford MONDEO TDCi 13 Pin Electrical Kit for Trailer Coupling (ie tow bar electrics to enable a caravan to be towed)installed, in particular the wiring up of the 12v fridge circuit and the battery charging circuit. The accompanying Instruction Book only devotes one page to this subject and does not provide relays, wiring etc to enable these circuits to be connected. Ford Technical are hazy as to whether this will affect the car\'s Warranty or the car\'s reliability. My car was built 22.12.03 and purchased by me in last two weeks, I am the first registered owner.

  • Ford Capri 2.8i gauges misbehaving 16 Jun 2004 (Forum)
They are on the right-hand side of the dial cluster; they register maximum unpredictably, when I know there's not much fuel in the tank and that the engine temperature is normal. The battery and oil-pressure gauges on the left-hand side of the main dials (rev counter and speedometer) appear to work normally, as do the main dials themselves. There's no predicting this problem: sometimes they indicate sensible levels on start-up and then go doolally during the journey, usually returning to normal behaviour at some point thereafter; at other times they are wrong at the start and then adjust later, the adjustment being gradual rather than sudden.
  • 306 Blower/Heated Rear Window Non-func 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I checked the other side of the ignition switch and this is at the same voltage so I guess it's not that. I traced the wire back to the control unit (near the battery) and found 12v at that end so I guess there must be a bad connection or fault in the wire between this and the ignition switch. My next plan is to check the bulkhead connector (behind the wiper motor) to see whether this is the problem or at least narrow down the fault.
  • Radio Interference 10 Mar 2004 (Forum)
(I have called it this for the benifit of the non-techies) Previously we have discussed EMI and its effect on battery drain. But there is another topic that could be even more interesting. Ways of reducing the complexity of the car wiring have been sought such as by (ideally) using a single pair of wires to supply everything and then switching things on and off by sending an appropriate code of pulses down the wire pair.
  • Airbag problem= invalidated insurance? 1 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The airbag issue would not be relevant but might an insurer try to use it as a "get out"? It is fair to add that the problem may have started when a new battery was fitted about 3 months ago and by the garage that did the MOT. Comment and advice welcome.
