  • Suzuki Grand Vitara - Grand Vitara 1.9ddis buying advice - dpf concerns 15 Aug 2011 (Forum)
We're both sold on the GV having owned 2 Suzukis already and looking at one locally but the only concern i have is that the internet is rife with tales of DPF issues with the renault engine. The car will be used primarily by my wife for commuting 10 miles each way to work on a mixture of village and 40 -60mph bypasses and the expected fuel saving against the focus we will also be doing 1hour long journeys at weekends on mixed roads again but with opportunity to run at higher revs, also during the week/every 200miles or so we could run at higher revs without going too far out of our way.

Motoring writers blow the gaff now and again, but its obiously not common knowledge outside the trade, and Ive seen peoples jaw drop when they find out they are actually driving a Golf with another name. I saw a Nissan van the other day that looked just like a Renault, my mate next to me said , thats cos it is!!! I hear in Australia if you buy a Ford its actually a Mazda, the only Ford bit is the badge. Please let me know, I reckon theres enough here for a book, maybe called, "So you thought you were driving a ?????.
  • What to buy 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
My budget is £12k, though I'd rather spend £10k and although I'll almost certainly buy from a main dealer, I don't mind private if I can buy a warranty from the manufacturer. (Is this ever done...?) No no's? Renault or Citroen and anything with a normal boot. So there you go. Cheers

Audi A4 1.9tdi auto - Too new to fit into my £12k budget Audi A6 1.9tdi auto - Seriously considering but what is the gearbox? Regular tiptronic auto (=mpg killer) or multitronic (=very efficient)? Ford, Renault, Citroen, Peugeot. Worried about putting £12k into any of these due to depreciation. VW 1.9tdi auto. Not very efficient gearbox. Merc 220cdi auto. Nice gearbox but drove one and think the interior is rubbish for the money.
  • Pug 406 V6 Wierd Oil Pressure Problem 9 May 2005 (Forum)
The engine in question is the 3.0 V6 lump (ES9J4) fitted in this instance to a Peugeot 406 but also used in some Citroens and (I believe) Renaults. It has developed a problem of late whereby it has no oil pressure upon starting. It's been in the garage several times and diagnosed variously as a dented sump fouling the strainer (dent removed worked OK for a week), clogged strainer (strainer removed cleaned refitted worked OK for 2 days).
  • Unusual insurance question 15 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Both of us were named on each insurance, since we drive the cars interchangeably. A few months ago, we sold the Peugeot, and obtained a new vehicle (Renault Scenic) under the motability scheme (my daughter is disabled), which also includes free insurance for the three years duration. Although my wife is the main driver, we are both named for insurance purposes.
  • Very cheap car suggestions 8 Feb 2003 (Forum)
It would be nice to find something that will last longer than a year. Any other suggestions from the assembled? She's expressed an interest in a Renault 21 Savannah but again I'm not convinced one at this price level will be much better than a boat anchor.

What of the vehicles that are overtaken? It is very heartening to see Bangernomics taken to extremes in France. Renault 4, monseiur? Pas de probleme. I 'ave zees verrry nice Renault 4; une veritable museum vehicle; rust libre; dodgy respray, mais beaucoup de years old, and still running. Un Pugeot 203 (I think it was).
  • Sort of. Or suggestions... - Kei Trucks 15 Mar 2024 (Forum)
We have a small trailer tent (Dandy Dart, about 350kg) that we use during the summer, so anything would have to be able to tow that. Our current second car (Renault Twingo) can't tow. I have always fancied a kei truck, since I drove a Bedford Rascal back in the day (the day being about 1997-98 in this case).  It occurred to me that, with a dropside, I could potentially take the trailer tent off the full chassis (it needs new suspension) and just put it on the load bed of such a truck when required (fixed in place somehow and held in the air whilst putting it on somehow...)
  • Returning the car I traded in 10 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Hi all, right here goes, I just traded my Renault Megane in last Monday for a Vauxhall signum, the following morning on the way to work i noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust, I got a friend from work to have a look, the swirl bar was off and one of the pins it connects too was broken, my mate says it will probably need a new inlet manifold , then on the way home the car started squeeling every time I slowed down and even more black smoke when I sped up, I decided to contact the dealer I got the car from and told him about the problems, I took it up to him, he said he will fix it and asked me to buy a swirl bar off eBay and he will fit it, I said ok, while waiting for the bar to come, the car felt even worse, two days later I decided enough is enough, I contacted him and said I wanted my old car back, he said I can't do that, he said he spent money on my car putting it through mot, and fitting a new timing belt, he said he serviced it too, altogether he said he spent 500 pounds on my car, i just wanted my car back so now I'm down 500 quid, when I got my car home I checked it, there was no new timing belt on it, the service was not down because the oil was still black, my tyres where worn down so it couldn't have passed mot, he changed the wheels so it would pass mot then put my old ones back on, I know this because the bolts on my wheels had been changed and my locking nuts where missing, my question is, do I have any rights in getting my 500 pounds back, even if he had done work to it, I'm glad to get my car back, the signum would have ended up costing me a fortune
  • Need help in deciding a Crossover vehicle 15 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Kia Sportage (1.7 engine might be under powered for my daily driving) 5. Nissan Qashqai / Renault Kadjar (1.5 engine might be under powered for my daily driving and the rear passenger space is very crammed) In general I like Symmetrical vehicles so I'm not considering vehicles like Ford Kuga, Skoda Yeti, Citroen C4 Cactus, Honda CR-V, BMW X1 which are a bit odd shaped.
  • Any - Badge of Honour schemes your veiws please. 16 Jul 2012 (Forum)
This can include bulb replacing and wiper blade replacing as long as there is not a lot of dismantling required (RE Renault's for instance!!). We saw evidence of a local dealer who charged a customer £35.00 + vat to replace the front 2 wiper blades on a Ford Ka!!!! We also have a customer who over 2 years down the line and adhering to the Motor Codes requests is now resorting to legal action against a Motor Code registered garage after the Motor Codes have come up with a blank and they are meant to be independent in such cases?

  • New Buyers Help 14 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The only thing thats cheap are the French cars, and while I do think think the French do make a decent car, everyone tells me the autos are rubbish (espicially Renault). Because I need the auto, I am advised to get German, American, or Japanese but that costs much much more...   So my question to you all: AM I CRAZY IN MY LOGIC? Most people think I am.
  • Audi A3 - Advice on buying Automatics 28 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I apologise in advance for transferring the brain-ache and / or if this has already been covered somewhere else. To summarise, my last two cars have been semi-automatic gearboxes (1st one a Renault Clio Quickshift, 2nd a Citroen C3 Sensodrive) and both have been spectacularly, almost outstandingly unreliable, almost killed me on several occasions and ended their sorry lives as part ex’s that went for peanuts.
