  • Modern car gearboxes 25 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I haven't driven a newer PSA car, but the older ones had very little spring in them and the gearshift felt floppy and badly weighted. Renaults (and newer Nissans) are just plain sloppy -- gearstick just flopping around when you're driving. VWs are the reverse -- slow, and clunky, but at least they feel as if they're built to last. Probably aren't but that's the feeling you get.
  • Time for a change ...................... 21 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I've also looked at a new Octavia, but wasn't keen on the deal offered. I've also looked at Peugeot, Citroen and Renault but aren't keen on any of them. I probably prefer a petrol engine, but the toyota D4D is very quiet and is a least as quick as the Mazda 2.0 petrol. The toyota diesel is only £650 more than the 1.8 petrol, but appears to have much stronger residuals.
  • Car prices go up - Electronic go down. 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Article I read recently said that these days are numbered:- 1) Environmental cases against big cars with big engines (and the big profits) 2) New competition coming within 5-10 years from the east - East Europe, South Asia, South East Asia and China 3) Existing big European suppliers caught - Mercedes, BMW aiming for up market segment with bigger cars, Mass market suppliers(Ford, Peugeot) market attacked from above and below from new emerging suppliers from below as well as existing competitors with new brands (GM has Daewoo / Chevrolet, Renault has Dacia/Logan, Toyota has Daihatsu) If the market in 5-15 years time is filled with Chinese, Indian...........where is the future for Peugeot? If the Upmarket segment of MB& BMW is attacked by Lexus, Infiniti............... will they compete as currently they sell on badge and lack the engineering quality of the Lexus Who will be the winners and big names - may be the future is Cheaper, smaller, simpler, easier to fix cars and not the all singing and dancing electronics in the current car choice.
  • Nicole - New car 1 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Mitsubishi colt -a lot of car for not much money, Trade sales have shed loads at 6.5k BUT boot too small. Fiesta - Its a ford, its got ford gears we are left with a shortlist. Seat Ibiza New Renault clio New Toyota Yaris. So with that in mind, today we had a test drive at out local Seat Dealer. Nice friendly dealer -no pressure, test drive was booked previously and was a "where is your driving license, sign this form, give me your old keys, here are the keys to the car, bring it back in an hour or so and have fun" So we had a 1.4 ibiza sport for an hour.
  • Jaguar car co for sale? 4 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The strategic alliance is a buzzword in the American car market at present. General Motors is in talks with Renault and Nissan about striking such a venture to help to turn round GM?s operations. Jaguar revenue has plunged in the past two years, despite a boom in global luxury car sales. It is estimated that the company sold 41,000 Jaguars in the first half of 2006, compared with 118,000 in 2004.
  • advice on 2003 Mondeo Ghia 30 Jul 2006 (Forum)
All this from a main dealer! I thought I would see what I price I cud get for my own car.. being Renault Laguna 1.8RT on a P 2006 plate. I knew i would not get much for it.. but asked £1000 for it. They offered 320 for it.. I asked for 500 and got it. I then said if they reduce the price to 7500 they would get a deal that day.
  • What price 5* Ncap crash protection 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Any of you doubt the benefits of 5 star NCAP crash protection, you look very hard before you scoff. Thank you Renault. It may have had a dicky clutch and a whining gearbox, but when the crunch came your promises came through. Thanks to Leicestershire Police, Oakham Fire service, Lincs and Leics ambulance service and thanks to Peterborough A&E team.
  • Touran 8 Dec 2005 (Forum)
As there are no ordering cars during December its mine till late Jan, or if I like I can keep it. 5 months old, 9k up, Touran SE 1.9 TDi 7 seats with Blaupunkt Travelpilot DX-R4 sat nav, 2zone climate. Initial impressions. Well the 105PD engine is nowhere near as smooth as the Renault dCi. You can feel its an oil burner. Having said that, for a 105PS its actually quite pokey with nice torque, quite wide band, not peaky like some 130PS PDs I have driven. All in all the power is useable and ample.
  • New Civic - Is Honda going mad? 27 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My parents generation and even I when I test drive cars seem to lament the sort of soft cossetting ride you could get from the Renault/Peugeots of old and instead the more modern versions of such cars are now "Germanically hard" as that is what the yoof marketiers think is what the market wants (ie ape a Golf/BMW). You do wonder if when car companies "clinic" a new car whether they actually interview a wide range of customers or even admit internally that the majority of their customers are about 20yrs older than they would like...
  • Newshape Nissan Primera 2.2DCI Fault 16 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The Garage on the last repair rather than get a new conector just cut back the wire and resoldered it so it would have been constanly pulling and again the wire broke. They were a renault dealer who just took on Nissan franchise to) the RAC man spent 30 mins getting a spare bit of wire, Soldered it and made me a temp repair which is better than the dealer repair. Today I went back to the dealer and saw the new (and thankfully experianced)Nissan service forman who said that it he had heard of this before and the conector was make to short from the factory.
  • Those WOW! moments remembered 20 Jan 2004 (Forum)
And just recently a Ferrari F40 bogging down as it took off from the Frizzell r'bout traffic lights, only to suddenly get a rush of power and just scream off. fantastic. Only to be more memorable for the Renault 19 1.4 on big alloys and blacked out windows 'trying' to keep up with the F40 - oh how i roared!!!! Whats your fondest wow memories?
  • Best secondhand motor for £10k? 22 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Not a *huge* amount of choice here in Guernsey but the main makes are well represented (VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, Honda, Renault). Your thoughts appreciated!
  • Vectra A/C 12 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I would like to finish with a short rant re the motor manufacturers who seem intent on forcing A/C on all of us. A friend of mine with a Renault Safrane had to shell out over a grand to keep his vehicle on the road when his A/C compressor seized. Again like me he does not want or need it but there is no poverty model of his car with a non A/C belt arrangement.
  • Why do you run so many cars? 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
OK lets go smaller - renault scenic etc - good family car - small enough - the wife will say not really - auto yes, tools in the back - no not with the family to an even greater degree. 4x4 - you can get them I know. To be fair, it may be more feasable to go from 3 cars to 2 and keep the van.
  • any - Modern petrol Estates - any known vices? 1 Aug 2024 (Forum)
There are 2020 - 2019 Skoda Fabia and Octavia estates with reasonable mileage under 100k and 1.0 - 1.4 , 1.5 turbos. Is there anything to notice? Is this cheap for a reason? Also, a Renault Megane 1.3 Tce seems to have decent figures in the performance section. What about natural aspirated/ manual combos like the Avensis? I see a fair few Astra Tourers with a 1.6 motor. Is this worth a punt?
  • Dacia / Duster - SUV recommendations 29 Jun 2020 (Forum)
We also like the look of Peugeot 2008 (preferably 1.2 puretech petrol) and a few come within budget but they didn’t seem to offer the same value. The only petrol, low usb mileage / aged Qashqui we have found has the twin cam Renault engine which I have read can be troublesome. The fact that it’s considerably cheaper than others raises my eyebrows https://www.evanshalshaw.com/search/details/nissan/qashqai/manual-petrol-black-hatchback-pn15cxd/ We live in semi-rural Northamptonshire for ideas red usage.
  • Testing a Kuga PHEV 27 Jun 2020 (Forum)
So the Kuga is a good one to think about, but the rest of the year should be interesting with some more PHEVs in the pipeline: Skoda Octavia, Renault Captur, and BMW X1 and 330e Touring.  The last two may come out too expensive if some of the essentials (like lumbar support) are on the options list.  That's already the case with the Volvo XC40, and Volvo petrol engines all seem to be distressingly heavy drinkers.

  • A car to fit 3 child seats in a row? 18 May 2012 (Forum)
I have been looking for weeks for a suitable car, firstly I wanted a small 7 seater with the intention to never use the boot seats but handy if I ever return to Childminding. I wanted one that was lower insurance and tax too - looked at renault grand scenics but heard horror stories about electrical problems so not sure now. Then Toyota Corolla Verso but read many stories of the mtt problems with the gear box's and was really put off as I don't want to be stranded and not be able to change gear!
  • Any - Looking for my next car £5-6K budget 17 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I like the look of the 1.6 8v SEAT Leon mark 2 (which I gather is belt cam). Maybe a 1.8 Focus? I can't say I particularly like Skodas, Kias, Hyundais, Renaults and I find Toyotas a tad boring, if that helps!
