Volkswagen Sharan (1995 - 2009) - 09 2.0 Bluemotion diesel 'EGR bounce' 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
According to the garage (unfortunately I did not test it) this stopped the effect, and VW now claim the effect is normal 'EGR bounce', a term I cannot find on the web and which I suspect they just invented! I have driven VW Sharan diesels (2 before, I am sure they had EGR valves!) for >10 years and never experienced anything like this - has anyone heard of it? It may be unrelated but I am also very disappointed with the fuel economy - only 35-40 mpg which is a little worse than my previous 10-year-old version and hardly justifies the 'Bluemotion' label! -
Frontera diesel low idle + stall problem 20 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Got a 1999 Frontera Diesel 2.2DTI Manual with an idle problem. It starts fine and drives well until I sit at some lights etc and let the engine idle. After about 5 seconds idling, the idle drops by 100 - 150 rpm and the engine runs lumpy. -
SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - Altea in Provence (Road Test) 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
(I take it that this is because diesel engines are ?tight? when new, and fuel economy improves significantly after several thousand miles, whereas petrol engines are just about at their most economical when new?) I might add that the car was shod with Michelin Energy tyres, which should mean that fuel economy was about as good as it was going to get. -
Which diesel gives the best real world economy? 21 Mar 2016 (Ask HJ)
I want to buy a car with good real world fuel economy. I quite like the Mazda 6, Skoda Octavia and BMW 3 Series xDrive. Which would you recommend? -

Regular high mileage motorway recommendations 22 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Cruise Control. Budget of up to around £8K Not too worried about engine size, car size, badge, fuel type, although am guessing mid size, hatchback/saloon, diesel are prob best trade off on the above requirements. Thanks a lot for all help :) Mark -

Saab versus Volvo - Comparing and buying 29 Dec 2014 (Forum)
They are both 03 reg, both have best part of a years MOT and have mileage of around 140 000. Priced at £1500. I am guessing the Saab probably has better fuel economy, being diesel. But have heard all sorts of problems regarding limp mode and fly wheel problems. The volvo appears to have the most reliable reviews? Both of these cars have good service history. -
Ford Fiesta - fiesta 1.8d, black smoke and lack of power 4 Jul 2014 (Forum)
hi all, i've got a 98 fiesta with the 1.8 non turbo'd diesel engine, it's got the plastic inlet manifold, so no egr as i understand it. when i accelerate there's a lack of power and a fair bit of black smoke. if you keep accelerating and get the revs up it clears, pulls pretty hard for what it is and the smoke disappears. with quick gear changes you can keep it pulling, but if you lift off it needs to be cleared again. i pulled the pipe off the air box to rule out the air filter and it's had a recent fuel filter. -
Audi A4 - Motorway mileage 15 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Runs well but has been bit expensive with 1K repair each year at least and change of tyres Mileage is only 36/gallon, I dont necessarily stay at 70-75, if I did it would be 42-46 Would it really save me good deal if I buy anothet 1.8-2 litrecar petrol or diesel? Which? I am partial to Germans ie whatever fuel economy will be offset by downpayemnts! I expect to keep doing 25-30K per year for another 5 years and don't like small cars Help!! -
Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI - Engine Systems Fault 30 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Hi, I just popped out of work on lunch to get some diesel. I got a few hundred yards from the petrol station and the red engine management light came on with Engine Systems Fault. I pulled over and turned the engine off for a couple of minutes and it was still on when I switched it back on (was hoping it'd be that simple). -
ford mondeo III tdci - Injector issues - what to look out for 10 Sep 2012 (Forum)
If so what signs do I look out for on them? (2) I have heard the injector issue is down to the quality of fuel being used, so no using supermarket diesel then ? Thanks -
Citroen Xsara 1.9TD (1998 R Reg) - Loss of Power 15 Oct 2011 (Forum)
At higher speed and when have momentum the acceleration feels much better but I can't be completely sure of whether it is still down on previous performance.I have self diagnosed it to be the turbo not kicking in but I am very much the novice so may be completely wrong. I have no loss of fuel economy nor any other signs of smoke other then the usual diesel puffs. It goes in for a service in a weeks time so hopefully they will advise me then but I want to prepare myself for them telling me some bad news. -
Peugeot 306 - 306 dturbo - no power 18 Aug 2010 (Forum)
i have fitted a 405 dturbo to my 306 dturbo after the last engine packed it in . the engine is from a 1995 dturbo 405 and the car is a 00 306 van . i am using the lucas pump off my previous engine with injectors too . in conjunction with the 405 engine im using its own manifold and garret turbo too . the wiring is from a 306 straight diesel slightly modified to run a dturbo . the engine sounds fine running and all but it has no power what-so-ever . when i remove the pip going from the intercooler to the fuel pum and place my finger on it at the intercooler there is only a small amount of air flow , anyone know whats wrong ? -

`Own brand` filters V Main dealers Original 11 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Diesel Fuel filters filter 1) The element composed of a very high quality looking `fleece`, squeezable (only done with old one) no surface imperfections. Filter2) looking as rough as a bears bottom, a hard wound on synthetic material with splintering off flakes standing out at angles on the surface. -
LPG Taxation 27 May 2008 (Forum)
I'm still toying with having the Mondeo converted as I simply can't find any other vehicle to match it for power but with 40mpg economy without resorting to a newer common-rail diesel. (even the TDCi 130 ain't gonna be nicer to drive than the V6) -
Oil Spec change question, confused 23 May 2007 (Forum)
I can get an oil and filter change on my Diesel corolla 2003 for £25 from National..Much cheaper than Toyota. However they specify the oil to be used as Visco 7000 0w-40 I enquired at my Dealership last service, and they said they used Shell Helix 10w-40 The handbook says ''Oil grade ACEA,b1,API CF-4 or CF'' Visco is CF The hand book also says ''SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for fuel economy and good starting in cold weather,if you use SAE 10W-30 or higher at very low temperatures the engine may be difficult to start'' Basically, will I be ok with this oil from National as an interim, until my next main dealer service in November?? -
60mpg, reliable and a touch of class? 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Having just accepted a new job about 70 miles (M-way) from home, I'm looking to replace my Passat V6 TDi (auto, nicely appointed, goes well, but only 32 mpg overall) for something around the £9-10k mark which is exceptionally frugal on fuel (e.g. is 60mpg to much to hope for?), is reliable, won't lose too much value from clocking up maybe 400-500 miles a week, and is preferably auto. Don't really mind whether petrol or diesel, but I would have thought it would need to be the latter to maximise consumption.
