  • Jaguar X type 6 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As usual, the cheapest deals seem to be in the north of England or Scotland while I'm based in Kent, but distance is no object if I can save a couple of grand! Yes I know that Mercs and BMW are probably better cars but a 1 or 2 year old model is still too close to the new price. Whereas I've seen some X types Jags at two thirds their cost price at only a year old so in the real world,a one year old 3 series is £20k,but the similar equipped jag is £15k!
  • How do young guys afford flash motors? 20 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Other than the odd dot com whizz kid, do most young guys get the money from their parents? When I was last back in the UK at Christmas, I saw loads of very young guys in BMWs, Golf turbos etc. Maybe this is the new found economic prosperity which has been occurring in my absence. When I was that age (which wasnt that long ago), the most expensive motor I had cost 800 quid!
  • Time to trade for a Rover? 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
(I understand space, but quality/drive etc...and what's the diesel actually like - someone told me the 111bhp version is the 75 one, which has an old BMW engine??? Cause I may choose to go derv...) And another question is, would I actually be getting value for money? I mean, the value is depressed now, so in a few years time, would it be significantly worse, or do you reckon they'd stabilise?
  • Driving abroad with Xenon lights 28 Apr 2005 (Forum)
However, I have been told that Audi xenons can only be adjusted in this way by a dealer. Can anyone confirm that? My former BMWs both had xenons and had a small lever behind each light to adjust RHD/LHD, so it was the perfect job whilst waiting in the queue for the ferry! Now it seems I have to visit a dealer then dazzle everyone as I drive to / from the ferry port (100+ miles) or else find a dealer at the ferry port who is open when we return at 9.30pm ... unlikely ... or one in France!
  • Replacment Windscreen 5 Apr 2005 (Forum)
The last time I needed a new windscreen I decided that having experienced a decidedly variable service from specialist firms, I would take it to the main (BMW) dealer to replace. I was astonished that there was no quibble from the insurance company, only them telling me that I would need to pay upfront and send them the invoice for reimbursement (which only took a fortnight).
  • unmarked electric buggy 6 Mar 2005 (Forum)
this morning on the m1, while driving from yorkshire to gloucestershire, saw two unmarked police cars (several miles apart)stopping two cars that had overtaken me a few minutes earlier. guess that the two motorists had been doing 90-95ish as i was doing indicated 80-85. one was a maroon vauxhall omega, the other a black 5 series bmw. got me thinking are there any makes of cars that you can safely presume aren't unmarked policecars? secondly, as i turned a corner in cheltenham i found an elderley gentleman driving up the middle of a road on/in an electric buggy thing. no lights, reflectors etc. what would the legal position have been had i hit him?
  • Order timescales for Audi 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
They tell me that the other 4 cars ordered in the same allocation as mine are in the same position, but I never had any problem like this with the BMWs I have previously bought. I find this a bit frustrating, not least as I want the car before I go for a tour around France in the middle of May! So my questions are these - does anyone know an approximate build time for the new A6 Avant and has anyone had experience of this situation before or could it be becuase the car is not released in the UK yet?
  • Car sold as UK car turns out as Import 29 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I bought a BMW from a Nissan Garage - was a part exchange. It failed its MOT, so I took it back to the Nissan garage as it was still under warranty Agreed to fix under warranty. However, the part they ordered did not fit - service guy called me and said it was because the car was an import and part was not applicable.
  • Wanted - best of both worlds! 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I will be changing my car soon and I'm looking to combine the best qualities of my last 2 cars - the build quality and refinement of my BMW 523i and the ride comfort of a C5 HDi 2.2. I would a refined, comfortable and reliable 5 seater with at least 450 litres luggage space. I can spend up to about GBP20k and would prefer to buy nearly new, to soften the depreciation.
  • Common or Prestige? 4 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Lets take the Vectra-nice 2.2 petrol auto, leather, climate etc etc-loads of goodies but I'll buy it when it's 18 months old for £13k and in 3 years what will it be worth-£7k if I'm lucky. So what if I bought a BMW 5 series, Audi A4 or Merc E class. All will be 4 years old so out of warranty. Will I have big repair bills to bite me or will they be worth the extra outlay and treat me to luxury motoring at not to high cost?
  • Absolutley gutted! 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Ok, here goes. I applied for a job at bmw as a trainee sales exec and went for the interviews and got the job. Great i thought. But i told a 'friend' of mine that i got the job, and he wrote in a letter to them just basically slandering me!
  • Car recommendations please 3 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Our other car is a Volvo 850 Estate, which is a bit dated inside, but we like it. We have considered another Volvo, a BMW 5-Series, possibly another Merc (with adjustable column) or a Skoda Octavia / Superb (that one I need to get past the wife!) Suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, Nigel.
  • New company car due 15 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I need a little bit of room in the back for the two sprogs (no car seats required any more :-)) and would like something at least as quick - if not better. BMW 320td - Coupe or Compact ? Audi A3 - 2.0 TDI (or FSI?) Honda Accord (Tempted by the Civic Type R but the emissions are a bit high) Alfas are not allowed. PS Does anybody know yet what the taxation levels for CO2 emissions will be after 2005/6 ?
  • The Mondewoe Is Going 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I would prefer a car of the same size as the Mondewoe, preferably an estate, but as SHMBO says I can always winch the trailer down from the garage roof and have a saloon or hatch back. I am not going to be brand negative, but it won\'t be French or a BMW. OR A FORD. I am looking in the morning so send your advice soon please. Waiting with anticipation, Bill
  • Step into sales - help! 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Can anyone give me any tips on how to make my first step into the motor trade? I am prepared to enter a training position and I have just applied to BMW for their sales career program. Does anyone know of any other firms that offer anything? Thanks for your help, Chris
  • Rear Badge or no Badge 27 Oct 2003 (Forum)
My current Alamo barge is a 'Classic' model which announces to all who need to know that this is the bog standard bottom of the range model. Oh the shame! Or you can specify your new Merc or BMW to have no rear badge, so you can drive an M5 and practice 'reverse snobbery.' However those knowledgeable enough to know about an M5 is will recognise the fat tyres, exhaust, and lowered suspension and those who think M5 is a ghastly UK motorway(well at its northern stretch) will be non the wiser anyway.
  • Secondhand Value? 12 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Obviously you need some expertise to minimise the risk of buying a lemon. Anyway looking at the Classified section on this site I see that there is a 1996N BMW 523i SE Auto with all the bells and whistles, but 106,000 miles, for sale privately at £7,500. I must admit I thought it a mistake but looking at Autotrader it would appear to be a little pricey but not outrageously so.
  • New car? 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I fancy a bit of luxury for a change, and despite swearing i\'d never buy one because of the stigma attached to them, i am tempted by an BMW, either 323 or 325 (the E36 model, 1991ish onwards). I know there are other, less flashy alternatives, but i\'m led to beleive that the beemer is the \"driver\'s car\" choice, which is what i\'m after as opposed to out-and-out luxury.
  • Spanish Car Prices (in English!) 10 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I don't expect to have loadsa money to spend - depends how my UK house sale goes - so we are not thinking of BMW-land(too big anyway)! Can you folks recommend any of the below: 1. makes/models which meet this 'spec'; 2. a website giving Spanish prices; & 3. approx money I should ask for my Focus? Not much to ask, I realise!!
  • Power Problems? 21 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Wonder if any of you BRers can help out. I have a BMW 530d and it seems that I have a power delivery problem. I have been to the dealer who did a diagnostic check and all seems to be OK but I am not sure. Firstly, in first gear power seems to be just OK until it hits 3000 rpm, where there is a sudden boost in power.
