Do 4x4s Alter Cognitive Behaviour ? 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
However first thing this morning a saw, in just a couple of miles, 4 or 5 drivers in 4x4's (mixture of Discoveries, Audi Q7 and BMW X5), driving as if it was 25 degrees and hadn't even rained for weeks ! No I dont care a bit if they wrap themselves around a lamp post, but its a different story if they take someone out with their huge hunk of metal by driving like this. -
Any tyre Gurus here ? 18 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Just looking for a bit of advice.. Have had a few issues with a BMW AUC car I bought a few weeks back and have been complaining about the pulling to the left almost ever since. The car has now been KDS and was found to be out of alignment. This has been done at their cost (thankyou) I do however, feel that the tyre should also be replaced as to me it is worn on the inner edge. -
Help needed at auction 26 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I'm hoping that a member can help with a small request, if anyone will be at the BCA auction at Walsall tomorrow I would like to know how much a BMW 320Cd Convertible goes for, VK56SYU. I know it's a bit of a departure from a 520d but my dad has rightly pointed out that I can expect better residuals from a 320d convertible than a big saloon. I'm going to do a back to back test drive tomorrow as I really, really like the 5 Series but could very well be tempted into a 3 Series. -
Poly-vee belts 15 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The engines I was usually involved with had the old fashioned vee belts, either single or in matched pairs, and I know little about poly-vees. The poly-vee belt on my 1992 BMW 525i drives the water pump, alternator and steering/suspension pump (no air-con) through a tortuous run with the help of a couple of idler pulleys, one being a spring-loaded tensioner. I assume that the 'tortuous run' is necessary to get a good wrap-round of the belt on the pulleys on this fast-accelerating engine. -
Newest/most valuable car you've seen going to seed 29 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Whilst visiting my local chippy the other day (not the carpentry variety), I noticed a 03 plate BMW Mini, sitting in a corner of a driveway, gathering moss, with a variety of maturing weeds and plantlife growing up around its wheels and body work. It has obviously not been used in well over a year (maybe two), and is being allowed (scandalously) to rot. -
Rear wheel drive or Front wheel drive ? 12 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The reasons seem to be mainly to do with manufacturing expediency. There are notable resistors such as BMW and Mercedes but by far the majority have followed this trend. Some would argue that FWD with its inherent tendency to understeer is generally safer in the hands of the less experienced or merely disinterested driver but surely there would be plenty of motorists who would still favour the purity of a RWD car? -
Motorbike to the Ardennes. 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The bike was loaded yesterday with the luggage I intend to take - Small Touratech tank bag (day bag), a Motarrad soft bag, and BMW Top Box - supplemented by an excellent Knoxx Rucksack. Items have been listed as to where they'll stored for the trip. Just taken 10 minutes to programme the excellent Garmin 2610 SatNav. Anticipation is starting now to kick in. -

re HJ's news item 11 July 08 - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=4975 The "sold" prices for some circa 2 litres models seem particularly low, eg.: BMW 318i 2.0ES Touring, 2005/54, 45k miles £6,800s Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia, 2005/54, 72k miles £3,800s Honda Accord 2.2i CDTI Sport Tourer, 05 reg, 49k miles £6,200s Mercedes C220 CSI A/G auto, 2005/55, 42k miles £9,900s Vauxhall Vectra 2.2i Desire. 05 reg, 64k miles £2,200s Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTI 120 Club, 2005/55. 33k miles £5,825s VW Passat 1.9TDI PD 100 est, 05 reg, 31k miles £5,900s -
Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - Value Question 6 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Whilst it is a great car that I am particularly pleased with (lots of poke and 52mpg) it's boot is not designed to take the kind of big loads I can get into a V70 or BMW 5 series Touring. Our company buys our cars outright so no leasing deals to consider, just the value of my car set against the cost of a new one. It is a 2005 / 05 plate Volvo S60 S D5. No extras other than the metalic Magic Blue paint. 81,000 miles on the clock, very good condition and a full service history. -
Selling two, for one but which? 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I still need carry the occasional school trunk and golf clubs regularly, but town-based so size must be reasonable [and smooth over the speed bumps and appalling road surfaces nearby]. BMW 3 series Estate [up to 2005 shape] fits the size bill. Mileage not over 12,000 p.a. Budget around £15,000. I'm toying with the old shape 5-door 2 litre Impreza which has a decent boot, as well as the 3 series, but the Focus Estate also meets most requirements. -
Jaguar XK and XKR (2006 - ) - Radio aerial 28 Sep 2007 (Forum)
To be honest, I had noticed this style of aerial before on the DB7 and the old XK, also on the MR2 and thought it odd. Even my old BMW had the aerial in the rear window. What on earth are Jaguar and AM playing at. It makes a lovely looking car look ridiculous. Does anyone have any idea why they do this ? surely it can?t be cost? -
Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - Lumbar Support on seats - any experience ? 14 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Having set my heart on buying an Accord 2.4 Executive/EX, which has an excellent spec including supposed lumber support, I have to admit that I found the driver`s seat to be most uncomfortable. I admit that I suffer from lower back problems, but find the seats on my current BMW, which has electric lumber adjustment, to be extremely comfortable. I was still most impressed with the Accord, after finding the overall build quality to be superb & engineering quality second to very few, I really want to buy one. -
New Defender. 4 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Same classic Landie shape, but a completely new everything else (well almost), the bonnet looks a bit odd as it has increased in height to accommodate the Transit lump, the doors now shut with a BMW type clunk rather than a Landie shake, rattle and draught. As stated in the press the front vents have gone (would I miss them - don't think so), the dash looks a little bit strange (almost like a latter version of the Rover 25) but its actually ok, everything else seems a little. a lot of the rivets seem to have gone as well in the process and the thing looks a lot more complete. -
Suggestions for 'sports' car? 10 May 2007 (Forum)
At first I thought about a Honda S2000, but a quick look at Autotrader showed only a few imports from Japan and 2000 registered models (I'd prefer the new car to be 4 years old max.) Never been keen on BMW's, a Lotus Elise and MX-5 are too small, so I'm struggling really. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. S6 1SW -
Peugeot 407 Coupe (2006 - ) - Mine has arrived 27 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The ride is excellent (although moving from 19" alloys to 17", that's to be expected) and it's very, very quiet inside. Decided against the BMW because of the awful run flat tyres (and there's so many around), Brera came close, but the dealer was truly awful and practicalities won over. The 407 does everything I need it to do and there isn't one parked in every other space. -
Giving it best 19 Feb 2007 (Forum)
My brother-in-law, a vehicle enthusiast raised in a garage and the best non-professional mechanic I know, was knocked off his BMW 650 (I think) the other day by a bloke who just drove into a roundabout in front of him. He said that as he was lying in the road feeling his bruises he thought it was time to stop biking. He thinks people don't drive as well as they used to. -
Shafted 3 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Now begins the tedious task of complaining talking to solicitor etc...... Enough to make me think of a BMW Any thoughts, similar experiences? -
Ligier Ambra 26 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Amazing 85mpg claim is the big selling point. 6.5hp would seem a fairly major demerit to me :) Needless to say, he does not intend using it on the 'open road', it will just be for a few mile city commute. I've suggested many alternatives from BMW roofed-scooter thingies to Smart cars to Honda lawn mowers, but he still seems keen on the Ligier (F1 heritage no less!).... After several hours, I have stopped laughing and will try to help him out by tapping into the huge font of motoring knowledge that is the back room.... -
