Troubled conscience 14 May 2005 (Forum)
Did I wait until the new plastic domestic oil tank arrives? Er, no, I added it to the 40 litres of diesel already in my car's fuel tank. But, I have a feeling that I need to pay some fuel duty on this. Anyone know if there is a precedent for this? Or should I just forget about it, and take an extra Scotch at night to help me sleep? -
non start polo diesel 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I know this car was well over due a timing, belt so set about stripping it to check in case it had jumped, it all aligned up, so continued to install a new belt, but still had the problem of not starting. I fitted a new fuel filter to eliminate that and now have made a small fuel tank to bypass the tank, filter and pipework and gone stright to pump, still will not fire. I don't seem to have much pressure at the injector pipes/injectors. -
Poss. electrical fault with M Reg Astra 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
First thing I noticed was the clock on the CD player was blank - its usually lit with the time. Got to our destination and halfway back when the airbag light came on as before, temp & fuel gauges re-set. Bit further down the road the engine warning light flickered on and off and the engine started to run a bit roughly - however this was all for only a few seconds and car started running perfectly normally again, but the airbag light stayed on and fuel & temp gauges were still on zero. -
LPG/Calor Gas cylinders 13 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Would it be a case of simply remove the LPG tank and have a secure fitting for the cylinder plus a regulator connecting to the old LPG fuel pipe? At 10 odd quid a cylinder it has to be pretty tempting... Dan -
Cars with big engines drink more - why? 7 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Flicking through a car brochure the other day , comparing fuel figures for the same model car, one fitted with 1.8L, the other 2.5L It was apparent that the 2.5 returns, nominally, a good 10MPG less than the 1.8. Lets say both of these cars are travelling at a constant speed, side by side along the same bit of road. -
Biodiesel Availability 13 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Incidentally the lady who filled up my car understands that there is a possibility of a cut in the rate of duty on this fuel to 5p per litre from 2004/5 (apparently it is around 45 pence per litre on normal diesel). -
Help! Another problem with my Granada 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Was it just having a senior moment, or was it something else? I was thinking that it may simply have been fuel vaporisation (the fuel pump is at the back and the sun was beating down on the car all afternoon) or perhaps a problem with the gearbox starting inhibitor? Anyway, once again, over to you. Many thanks for your input! -
Fiesta rs turbo problems 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi, i have just bought a fiesta rs turbo and it was running fine till the other day. i was sitting on the carriageway and it started to give a misfire when i put my foot down. i got it home and left it over night. now if i start it up it runs for about 2 minutes then just cuts out .... if i drive it, and put my foot down to quickly i get a bad misfire and the car seems to kick back. if i am gentle with the pedal i can get some boost off the turbo but if im too hasty it just shakes and kicks back. if i'm pullling away from junctions i have to give it high revs and pull away on the clutch or it stalls. i took it to a mechanic, he changed the fuel filter as it was full of dirt, and he said the pipe to it was kinked. i dont know where to start with it really so if anyone has any suggestions i would be reall grateful. someone suggested to me it could be the fuel pump? -
Who should get the second car? 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Now, my inital plan was for her to take over our current car - R-reg Rover 200 - and for me to get a diesel, so as to save fuel costs. However, following the ingenious method Honest John suggested, I have now measured the fuel consumption on the Rover, and it is giving 39.9, which is pretty good. I suspect I won't save that much money by switching to diesel, and that perhaps better value would be to buy a second petrol car for herself. -

Nissan Customer Care 3 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Since then I have noticed a 5% increase in fuel efficiency - a good result all round! On the other side of the coin - my dad's 96P Ford Fiesta has had over £400 worth of suspension repair carried out recently, on a car which has done less than half the milage than mine! -

Any - Six forward gears manuals 31 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I've noticed a number of cars now have six forward gears. I expect this is to do with fuel efficiency. However, does it affect driving style ? Is it O.K. just to use five of the gears ? Any increase in running costs ? -
Any - Road surface and consumption 27 Oct 2015 (Forum)
Does anyone know of any evidence that different surfaces (e.g.tarmac or concrete) affect fuel consumption? The level of road noise certainly varies, suggesting that at least some energy is lost as sound. That might suggest that the recent 'quiet' tarmac could improve consumption marginally. -

Old diesel engines are what I have read not fuel self primers. If I run out of diesel how would I start them?
