  • BMW 420i X-drive - Advice on options at the end of a business lease 13 Mar 2023 (Forum)
The question is do I find a way to keep a five year old BMW, or look for a new car? What are the likely pitfalls with a five year old BMW? If a new car, then what? I thought of an Audi A5 (before the new model arrives) but I recall the driving experience as being tremendously dull. Some of you may recall that perceived image is an issue in my line of work (the merits of which I cannot alter). so that will limit some of the possible choices.
  • FPN court summons for driving with No insurance !! 14 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Hi there, I'm new to this forum and I'm searching for info regrading my dilemma but there's hardly any info regarding this on the web. On 30/09/2019 my cousin financed a new Audi A3. it was his first automatic car and he asked me to show him the ropes so he insured me on it temporarily  ( for a one month period ) at approximatively 9AM . The car was delivered  at 5PM with a complementary one week insurance on his name.
  • Is there extremely reliable used car under 10k gbp 8 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Is there extremely reliable used car under 10k gbp, i want to have distronic, the things i want - i dont want car to be stolen  so audi, bmw ,mercedess are automatically removed, hybrid cars are also stolen a lot if not whole car catalytic convertor... lambdas everything,..   my other concern is Car to  have great or extremely good rust protection, and i would love to have at least distronic so automatic cruise control i love manual gearbox, since automatic gear box are slugish but if there isnt any other option i would accept it also i dont think i will be able to pay for more than 200hp taxes fuel consumption so its very limited options,   about diesel vs petrol dillemma i dont know if there is a decent , recent diesel which can last forever compared to old ones so i do think petrol is more reliable..

This week he has written an article about buying a car for the price of an annual bus pass (£625 from memory) but instead of suggesting a list of robust, simple, reliable petrol engined mass produced cars for which parts are cheap and available he’s went off on one with a list of the worst cars you could possibly buy on such a tight budget from a turbo diesel Renault Espace to big BMW’s, Mercs, Jags, a V8 Audi through diesel Volvo estates with interstellar mileages and Saab Convertibles even an Alfa Romeo. It is in fact a list of cars you shouldn’t buy for £625. The slightest thing goes wrong with most of them and it’s a write-off.
  • Any - Motorway Etiquette 17 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Just to clarify further, I am not advocating acting as a motorway vigilante law-enforcer - where the lanes are relatively clear I have no problem maintaining 70mph in whichever lane is clear and moving over as soon as possible, allowing the speedsters to wind up their Polos / Golfs / Audis / BMWs or Mercedes to whatever illegal speed they choose. (I’m not really biased against German cars, having owned a couple in my time – it’s their drivers who seem to feel the need for speed, just as drivers of red Italian cars did a generation ago!)

  • Honda Civic Type R - New Honda Civic Type R 18 Jun 2015 (Forum)
The mass-appeal of the original was amazing (a lot of bang for your buck) - they sold shedloads of them in the UK - personally I can't see Honda shifting many with those looks, likely very hard ride and the hefty price-tag, a bit like the Ford Focus RS.  Its almost a touring car with a number plate.  It doesn't help when both VW and Audi have still-very-fast but more civilised (for day-to-day use) alternatives.  Anyone wanting a proper track-day car will either use whatever is at the track (rather than shell out £30k for a car they would use a hanful of times a year) or buy a proper sportscar instead.
  • Swapping S-Max for Kia Sorento 16 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Having looked around I don't like any of the other seven seat MPVs and apart from the Grand C-Max you cannot spec them up to the same level as my car with all the bells and whistles. So its back to the larger 4x4s and the BMW X5, Audi Q7 are way too expensive, I had a Volvo XC90 and thought it awful so have arrived at the Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe twins.  The Kia appears to offer better value for money for the same spec and engine/gearbox combination.
  • All - 4 banger vs 6 pot. challenge 23 Jun 2011 (Forum)
A friend of mine has an Audi 2.5 V6 and he is very proud of the fact that it is silky smooth unlike a 'rough 4 cylinder'. The trouble is, apart from brief excursions of hard acceleration, it is impossible to run the engine at any appreciable load accept at very low RPM.
  • MINI Cooper + Cooper S - Warranty Service Plan 5 Jun 2011 (Forum)

Picked up an MCS yesterday, bought the car from a local VW/Audi dealership car is an 07 plate with 46000 miles full BM service history, last service was at 43000 miles. The dealership I bought it from have Mot'd it and put 2 new tyres on the front which I thought was very good of them plus they have agreed to fix a crack in the front bumper at their expense as it appears to have happened while in their possession.
  • Ford Focus - Insurance claim - named driver 4 Mar 2011 (Forum)
The persons car is a lease car and he insisted he tell the insurance that my wife reversed into it. He had some quoets and wants £1500 to fix the dent in his door. (It is an Audi). If I have to go via my insuarnce should I might as well get a new bumper even though it dosent realy need one and will that effect my insuarnce later or HPI if I sell it in the future? Any suggestions.
  • Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi 115bhp-Limp Mode 26 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Much more infrequently, the engine has been found to be in limp mode straight from start up where the engine has not reved hard however, again the process of turning the ignition off & restarting resets & the turbo is normal. l have had a diagnostic check carried out with the Volkswagon/Audi sofware, with no faults/errors being identified. There is no smoke produced & as l say, otherwise it runs fine. Reading the threads, other people with the same problem have questioned the turbo itself, the Mass air meter (which has recently been changed) the coolant temperature sensor & the ECU.
  • SAAB 9-3 Convertible - SAAB 9-3 Convertible Offer - Advice Please 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
It will have to be built to my spec and delivery is about 10 weeks, I shall keep the Sportwagon, I do not want a used 3yr old BMW or an Audi. I will keep it for at least five years, it will be a private purchase partly funded by a personal loan and will be maintained by a local independant SAAB specialist who charges less than 1/2 the main dealer prices and is warranty compliant.
  • Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006 - ) - Cold starting - serious misfire & blue smoke 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
So you can't have it both ways - is it a 'characteristic' or not?! They are using this tack because a legal precedent was set with a rejected Audi, where pulling to the left was deemed to be a 'characteristic' of that car... (see rejection of a vehicle on Honest John). Any help gratefully received. Why should the unwitting public be subjected to such contemptible treatment by the motor manufacturers and retailers?
  • Which used car to buy? 26 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The only other needs that I have are that it has to be an automatic, I don't want it to any less room in that back for adults or boot space than the Beetle, I don't want an Estate car and we like the idea of a BMW / Mercedes / Audi type car more than a Ford / Toyota / Vauxhall type. We've never driven sports cars before so suspect that things like how well the car handles when you throw it round corners don't matter so much to us.
  • Mitsubishi Lancer (2008 - ) - New Mitsubishi Lancer - Why poor fuel economy? 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
So sadly that is telling me that I am probably going to be sticking to Octavia's (which are great cars .... but don't look like a 2008 Lancer) So what is with the poor (in comparison with VW/Seat/Skoda/Audi) fuel economy? Does the Lancer have the aerodynamics of a pile of bricks with a satellite dish on top? Luke
  • BMW - Flakey quality 8 Sep 2008 (Forum)
On all these cars the leather on the drivers seat had worn and surface flaked off. I work with car interiors every day and its is a peculiar issue that seems to also occur on Audis and to a lesser extent VW's. Any area that gets even moderate impact with a human being seems to deteriorate rapidly. Its why a BMW 645i is not only ugly, but a huge disappointment qualitywise and why if that is the standard of so called quality cars, id rather have a cheap one thanks!
  • £10k fun car - M5 or C32 AMG, or other suggestions 28 Jul 2008 (Forum)
The M5 appears to have some very expensive inherent issues if you buy a lemon, I havent read so much on the Merc, but it appears to loose nothing in perfomance to the BMW. I'm not bothered about Auto or Manual boxes. The 3rd option was the Audi RS4/RS6. I haven driven a moddified RS4 2.7T V6 (circa 480bhp) from a colleague in Germany, it was certianly a very quick car, but again, i dont know about long term relibility. I also like the Monaro 5.7V8, seems alot of car for your money, and a few are starting to break close to £10k now, but i'm worried that the lack of ESP may make it a bit of a handful on wet/greasy roads, and wouldn't feel happy about my wife driving it in those conditions (She is only used to driving a FWD hard on Track days).
  • BMW 3-Series E92 Coupe (2006 - ) - Finally got off the pot 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I thought the Mercedes C200K and C220Cdi pedestrian, lumpy, soggy. That horrible pretend Tiptronic box. It sucked the life out of me. The Audi A5 and A4 were strangely disconnected. Amazing gearbox, if it lasts. Literally couldn't detect the changes even in MANUAL mode. Understand now why HJ used the word balletic. Point it right in the apex and it's pulled through the bend as if by magnetic forces.
