Insurance claims - main reasons for. 19 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I've been reading "10 ways to avoid making a claim on your car insurance" in the "Fool". These are rather prosaic - there's also this paragraph: "According to M&S Money, these were the top five reasons for car-insurance claims last December: 1. Drove into third party; 2. Hit in rear while stationary; 3. Hit animal or object; 4. Third party emerged from side road into vehicle; and 5. -
Thanks for the screen wash - car in front 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
You almost wish you had set things up like that yourself for the 2 metres from the bumper tail-gators. Of course, a single jet angled from the back washer - like a dog cocking it`s leg - would be just too obvious, I guess.. -

Mirror fix... 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Whilst out cycling this morning I passed a parked Peugeot van with a strangely modified o/s door mirror, unbelievably the missing mirror glass had been replaced with a Compact Disc! Got me thinking as to how good a replacement this might be, tried replicating what this van driver might see by using one as a mirror at home and the answer is not much at all, the hole in the middle of the CD is a major distraction and the image is quite dark, can't see how this can be safe to drive in traffic like this...... -

Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - Fumes/smell in car 16 May 2008 (Forum)
We recently got this S reg Clio as a runaround. It smells a bit fumey inside when on the move. No visible clouds from the exhaust. Had the exhaust system checked out for any leaks & that's fine. Can't smell anything under the hood when engine running. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - (98-04) 1.9 Tdi re-mapping 11 May 2008 (Forum)
I know someone who has had their 1.9 GT Tdi PD 115 remapped to 150. Can anyone tell me if this is safe for the car as I was under the impression the 150's had a much larger camshaft to cope with the extra torque? (no mention of year, so used info from the drop down menu choice made) -
VED change and unintended consequences 25 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I've noticed how many ads there are in the papers for fairly high CO2 emitting cars at present, including very seriously high 4*4's. Does anyone else think it's the manufacturers persuading people to buy before the showroom tax comes in? Would anyone do that? If people do buy now rather than later, the law of unintended consequences operates so that instead of there being fewer high CO2 emitters, there are more and on the road earlier. -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 1998 1.8T cracked windscreen on the inside 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Closer inspection shows a crack the starts under the plastic at the bottom of the screen and rises up 25 cm or so in an 'S' shape. No marks on the outside and the crack is on the inside. Rang the insurance and the RAC and they had not heard of this before. I'll have to get it changed next week. Bother. !! Regards Peter -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 98 1.0 litre Uneven tickover 6 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My S reg. Corsa 1 litre will not run smoothly. It doesn't idle at 1500rpm - it runs from 1000 to 2000. If you try to hold the revs. at 2000, it runs from 1500 to 2500. This carries on throughout the rev range. -
Validating a vehicles log book 27 Mar 2008 (Forum)
To check whether a V5C or 'The logbook' certificate is genuine, prior to the purchase of a vehicle, they should ring the DVLA?s helpline on 0870 241 1878 or visit http://www.direct.gov.uk/motoring The DVLA has urged car buyers to check the serial number on the top right hand corner of the V5C registration certificate. If it bears the prefix BG and falls within the range BG 9167501 to BG 9190500, the certificate may be stolen and the DVLA have advised motorists not to purchase the vehicle. -

Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - Can I tell front discs are worn/will fail MoT? 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
My 405's advisory on last year's MoT says that both front discs were slightly worn. It's covered just over 3,000 miles since then, as the person I bought it from used it very little. How can I tell if the discs will pass muster this time around? -
