  • Alternatives to EU made cars 8 Sep 2019 (Forum)
For the past 25 years I have driven BMW and Mercedes cars. Normally buying new and selling at 3-4 years old. Back in May I ordered a new MB C220d AMG Line for September delivery, however earlier this month I cancelled the order. The reason for this is the disgusting way that EU countries behave towards the UK.
  • Extended warranty, urgent help 2 Sep 2019 (Forum)

  • BMW118i - A new cylinder head at 20k miles? Why? 1 May 2019 (Forum)
Call me old fashioned but I never heard of any car requiring such major work at such a low mileage. Haven't been able to get info from the BMW main dealer which did the work, but what might have been the reason? By 2016 I thought they'd fixed one or two problems, and this 1.5 petrol engine is well thought of surely. Does this make it a car to avoid?
  • Prestige cars, worth the money? 22 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I'm currently the owner of a VW Polo and having been in numerous BMWs and a few Mercedes, I'm left wondering what the appeal of up market cars is, apart from more power from the engine. A colleagues Jaguar XJ was no quieter or smoother than a decent VW, Audi or similar, and the interior seemed modest apart from some nice walnut veneer.
  • US consumer reports - Best and worse cars in USA 8 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Needless to say the recommended models are mainly Japanese, Honda Toyota Mazda and Subaru. German cars feature too in particular Audi and to a lesser extent BMW but very few Mercedes make the grade. No mention of French cars as they are not imported as possibly they won't stand up to the lemon laws, and one Italian small car the Fiat 500 which is considered to have poor reliability.
  • New Volvo V90 - another badly designed car 24 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Even by class standards the Volvo's space is paltry. Merc E-class is 300 litres more spacious while the A6, BMW 5 series and the previous V70 all have more capacity Volvo are quite clearly going for style over substance. I can see antique dealers buying something else. The Skoda Superb has a cavernous 1950 litres of space.
  • Allowance Vs. Cash help 20 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Hi there, Firstly apologies, an annoying question, but hopefully you guys can help so I'm looking on moving house and my mileage is going to go up and wondering if I should take the company car so current situation is to take the allowance: Allowance £7k (+ can claim business petrol) (currently own outright an mx5, that is getting old 100,000k miles on clock so probably due an upgrade, worth approx 4.5k)  OR New Company Car (a bmw/merc/audi of my choice (within reason)+ free petrol card (work & personal) annual mileage est 30,000miles (50/50 business/personal) 40% tax bracket,   any thoughts much appreciated,    Thanks

  • Which Executive Estate? 3 Feb 2014 (Forum)
The choices are: 2010 520d touring 25k miles 2011 525d touring 76k miles (latest 2 litre) 2012 Audi A6 Avant 2.0 S line 35k miles I intend to keep it for around 3 years and do around 12k miles a year. The BMWs are the same price and the Audi another £800. Which will be best in terms of value both to run and when I come to sell? Am very tempted by the performance of 525d but worried about how it will last and depreciate.
  • Carjacking and car choice 17 Jul 2013 (Forum)
According to the Met Police there are about 950 carjackings every year in London. All the news stories I have read always feature Mercedes and BMWs.  I have Thai friends who are buying a property in London and will be looking at purchasing a car to use when they are in the UK.  I am inclined to advise them to avoid a German marque and buy something anonymous.
  • Audi A5 Sportback - Help me choose a car 16 Jul 2013 (Forum)

  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 SL 2.2D 185 130K miles - Go for it? 24 May 2013 (Forum)
I am aware that this is a good engine (hopefully without the epic DPF failures as the previous owner drove for a loooong time, so I assumed all the soot is cleaned up,lol). The other car that I have in mind is a 2005 BMW 525D SE 100K miles, they are both the same price, I would like to know your opinion. Thanks.
  • BBC Watchdog - 12th Sept 1 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I saw this programme last night by chance but it was rivetting! First bit was about keyless entry BMW's being stolen regularly with a device you plug into the system that reprograms a blank key. Have to say I was somewhat confused by the fact that the alarms don't go off when a window is smashed. I need to check if a Krooklock still fits modern steering wheels!
  • Jaguar X-Type - Grating windscreen wipers 1 Jul 2012 (Forum)
The strange thing is that in the course of a day they can go from being grating and not clearing well to being suddenly quiet. I have read  some BMW 3 series are also prone to this problem; I wonder if they are flipping over properley? I don't buy the most expensive brands, but noticed the first owner replaced them at only 1500 kms at Jaguar. Any idea?
  • 4x4s on skinny tyres 28 Jun 2012 (Forum)
But the alloys were massive, very solid, like the old Porsche wheels on steroids, and it had big rubber tyres. Looked quite good. The first was a BMW, so big it was like a tank. But from my little window near the ground I saw it had thin, spindly alloys, clad in low profiles about two inches thick. It's just not right.
  • Reliability of larger diesels 10 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I have noticed that some of the larger  diesels like the  Jag 2.7  Volvo 2.4 D5 and the Audi 3.0 TDI as well BMW 730D   seem to suffer less than some of smaller offerings by the same brands. Are these better engines in general with inherently less faults or I am i talking through my .....  ?

  • Clarify something for me if you can... 24 Jan 2012 (Forum)
When I was driving home from work yesterday afternoon, for some distance I was travelling behind a black 59-plate BMW 3-Series, which had two strip stickers on the back, just under the little 'lip' the boot has.  The stickers said 'police training'.  The car was doing  well over 70mph, didn't have any grille lights that I could see when I passed it, and he never nicked anyone.
  • MINI Cooper S - Paint - DPF - Automatic 19 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Can you advise on: 1,  (a) Would metallic paint finish add / detract from a future resale value  (b) How does it compare to conventional finish for repairs etc? 2. Does the diesel version (understand it uses 2litre engine from BMW 1-series) have any problems ref DPF - I see there's been lots of discussion on problems with this : are they resolved? 3. If I choose an automatic gearbox: how does this affect resale values - I've had conflicting views from Mini dealers Many thanks for any help on this.
  • Family Estate 29 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Time to change the (wife's) family car (2002 MkIV Golf,63K,good runner but now too small for 3 kids & 2 dogs). (It's been suggested that my prized (but impractical) BMW E39 535i goes, but I reckon if I manage to get her a suitable replacement for the Golf, she'll back down on this!!) We've looked at estates (doesn't want an MPV) - Focus/Astra good and cheap runabouts, but probably a bit on the small side.
