Reliability of larger diesels - Boss Hog

I have noticed that some of the larger diesels like the Jag 2.7 Volvo 2.4 D5 and the Audi 3.0 TDI as well BMW 730D seem to suffer less than some of smaller offerings by the same brands.

Are these better engines in general with inherently less faults or I am i talking through my ..... ?

I have also noticed that many of these engine for sale have very high mileage, more so than the smaller 2.0 and I'm thinking that they are good for at least 150,000 + if maintaned correctly?

Maybe its just the case that we hear about the samller diesel engine problems more because the samller ones are simply more common.

Diesels thrive on being used. Large diesels have probably spent day after day on motorways under very low stress - exactly what they are built for. Decent ones will do many hundreds of thousands of miles if used like this every day.

My dad had small diesels and did 30,000 a year teaching and never had an issue with any of the ones he had - about 8.

If you buy a smaller diesel and pootle round town a few days a week you have more chance of having problems. Likewise if you buy a 150,000 mile 6 cylinder and pootle round town you may also begin to get problems through lack of use.

Have a look at Mondeo diesels they do not seem have any problems doing 120k plus.

It's probably true that larger diesels are more durable ,however the fuel economy is not that great ,my E270 auto CDi ,can only manage 28 mpg around town .
