  Dear Honest John, I am new to Mercedes so please forgive me for the question. My Mercedes E220 CDI 2006 might need an auto gearbox oil change. When the car is cold, the auto is a bit funny,ie not super smooth, but changes gears as normal. When hot, is plush as anything.  I just want to know if you ever change the Auto Gearbox oil, at what interval and what specs oil should i use?

  I have found the minor servicing has now begun to get expensive especially when they probably only change the oil. I am wondering if changing the engine oil is a DIY job and relatively simple. I have changed spaerk plugs and headlamps bulbs in the past, so I am hoping to be able to do this.also my car seems to have a protective cover(dust cover) underneath the engine compartment whch I am unclear as to how to remove.I understand that this cover(which cover the entire engine compartment underneath) will have to removed to change the engine oil. any thoughts will be well appreciated. many thanks nand

  Can any one advise on changing the gear oil in my astra, I have had trouble with the gears sticking and locking in 4th gear , we emptied the oil from underneath yesterday and it looked really bad, we think it has been contaminated by the coolant, which was a problem with these models. the oil was orangy brown so i guessed it hadnt been changed for quite some years as i bought it second hand.
