Mercedes E220 CDI 2006 - Mercedes E220 CDI 2006 Auto gerabox oil change? - barabatag

Dear Honest John,
I am new to Mercedes so please forgive me for the question.
My Mercedes E220 CDI 2006 might need an auto gearbox oil change. When the car is cold, the auto is a bit funny,ie not super smooth, but changes gears as normal. When hot, is plush as anything.
I just want to know if you ever change the Auto Gearbox oil, at what interval and what specs oil should i use? Mine has done exactly 150k miles.
I think the auto gearbox oil has never been changed, or it looks like it.
Any idea where i can find the service intervals, diagrams etc?
Thank you
Much appreciated.

Most auto boxes are 'sealed for life' and don't require oil change per the manufacturer (not on service schedules etc) but what they don't tell you is the expected life is about 60,000 miles. Anything else is borrowed time. I have this on good authority from several of my manufacturers contacts.
Before just changing the auto ox oil on such a high miler go to an indie and ask them to read codes for the auto transmission and check the auto oil for burning smell and metal filings. If present an oil change could make it worse (in which case offload the car asap whilst it's still 'ok'.
Either way IMO and based on personal painful experience a misbehaving transmission is a terminal sign and it's repair/replacement is usually not economically viable.
Good luck

The torque converter auto transmission oil should be changed (to the extent it can be) every 50K miles and can be done either by a member of the federation of auto transmission engineers who know what to do. www.fedauto.co.uk. or a Mercedes dealer. I have no connection with fedauto btw. Oil change should be around £140.

I'd be surprised if the car has gone this long without a gearbox oil change, if so the previous owner(s) was foolish.

My suggestion is as above, either a member of fedauto or a MB specialist indy to do the job, not a car to entrust to just anyone.
