Will changing my Toyota Celica's engine oil prevent it consuming oil?

I have a Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTi on a 'Y' plate. The problem is that it consumes approximately one litre of oil every 1000 miles. It's only done 70,000 miles with a full Toyota service history. It doesn't smoke and uses 5w/30 motor oil. Would it be possible that changing the oil to 10w/40 may help solve this problem?

I don't think so. This seems to be a piston rings/bore glazing problem.
