speedo fault 635csi 4 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I have an interesting fault on the speedo of my BMW 635csi. When you put you foot down the speedo will drop about 5-10 mph and then when you take your foot off the pedal then it springs back to what I assume is the correct figure. There seems to be no middle position, either it is in the correct reading or the 5-10mph too low reading, and it swings in between very rapidly. -
Glass's - pre-1997 10 Apr 2005 (Forum)
One was honest enough to tell me it wasn't in Glass or CAP. I got a Glass valuation for a 1997P and deducted £500 from it but it is nowhere near. Car is a BMW 318Ti 1.9 Auto 53000 FBMWSH in near perfect condition except for some slight fading of the Red paint. £2500 is the sort of figure they come up with yet Glass says around £4000 for a 1997P. Any help would be appreciated. -
Best cheaper tyres? 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I am intending to sell my 5 year old BMW 5 Series privately in the near future. It will need 4 new tyres for the MOT and I've been quoted around £600 to replace the Continentals. However seeing as I am sellin the car it is unlikely this outlay will be reflected in the selling price so has anyone any experience/ideas of cheaper tyres with a relatively well known brand name. -
Value of optional extras 8 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I know that most optional extras don't increase the value of a second hand car (vs one without extras) and also not having the 'right' options can also make it very difficult to sell a car (ie a BMW X5 with no leather). What about options such as semi automatic transmission though? For example I'm interested in the new golf GTI which has the option of a DSG gearbox (cost £1.5k). Am I likely to lose this full £1.5k after three years or will I get a proportion back? -
Speedo/Tacho. Stopped Working - BMW520i 8 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I started my 2000 V reg BMW 520i SE this morning and noticed that the speedo, tacho, fuel gauge and LCD readout where the mileage and trip computer should be wasnt working. It was fine last night but it now seems the complete control panel has stopped working. -
flashing blue lights 20 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I noticed a way back that a car with blue headlights seemed to be flashing his lights all the time. As the car went past (slowly) I noticed that it was a BMW with the projector style headlights, as he came up behind the car in front (daul carrigeway) it moved over quite quickly - I guess thinking that it was an agressive driver wanting to get past. Every tiny bump in the road seemed to cause the lights to flash, I have an audi with these style headlights and I'm sure mine don't flash like that. -
Cost of Scratch Repairs 5 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The damage is not serious, i.e no bare or deformed metal. To repaint the wing I've been quoted almost £300 by a BMW dealer and £140 at a Nationwide Crash Repair Centre. Does anyone know why the big difference. Cost is not the main issue for me. My main concern is to get a repair that looks as good as new and which doesn't get marked down as "accident damage" when I come to sell the car in a few years time. -
Nissan Almera for £7250??? 16 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I was thinking about downsizing from my BMW 330 to a new Clio or something nondescript. Now I see I can have a Nissan Almera Pulse with cd and aircon for £7250! My brother bought an old 100k Nissan Sunny once as a stop gap car. It had well over a 100k miles. -
driving which wheels 28 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Have had my superb Lexus 200 for nearly two years, but now miss front wheel drive (for extra traction in dodgy weather) and hatchback/5th door (for convenience) with split rear seats set up for occasional awkward loads. HJ refers to "uncorrupted" steering (also with most Mercedes and BMW models) and, of course, the rear wheel drive set up gives a beautifully balanced car. But advantages of engine over driving wheels seem (to me) to outweigh cons .. I know it's down to personal preference, but I'll be very interested in comments from BRs on this wonderfully informative site. -
Nissan Road Presence 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I seem to recall a thread on here some time back about 'road presence' - i.e. the capacity of a car to make other drivers get out of your way when they clock you in their rear view mirror. I'd previously thought the new BMW 7-series was top-dog but this 350z went down the fast lane of a busy M4 like a knife through butter. My Polo has almost the opposite effect - I am cut-up and tailgated with a regularity that is positivly humiliating! -
Varta or Yuasa 20 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I'm about to buy a new battery for a bmw compact, choice is between Varta and Yuasa which are both the same price (£59). I have a 1994 Toyota Carina E, with an original Yuasa battery which has been left standing 10 days in the past few weeks and the car still turns over well and fires early! -
3 Series Convertible 25 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I'll be choosing my new company car soon and the lease rates on the 320i Convertible seem good value. However, my BMW dealer tried to talk me out of it saying that there wouldn't be enough room for 4 (kids will be 13 and 11 when it goes back) and our luggage. Can't seem to find a dealer with one in stock for a closer examination. -
Headlamp prices - LHD vs RHD ? 15 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I was looking up headlamp prices for a friend who has a current 5 series BMW (E39) on Euro Car Parts site and was puzzled to find that the left hand light assembley complete with indicator was listed at around £186 and the same assembley but for the right hand side was listed at around £227. -

Advice to a young driver 24 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Have just acquired a 1986 E30 BMW 316 which has done 96k and is in very good condition. I would like to change the oil and filter but do not know which oil and which grade to choose. Honest John states in the Car by Car Breakdown that the E30 is a "prime candidate for fully synthetic oil (engine won't last forever without it)". -
Top Gear tonight. 12 Oct 2001 (Forum)
1. What about the "spruce a BMW" slot? The only bit we didn't see was the engine no. being removed and the VIN plate changed. How back street can they get. 2. VBH...perhaps it didn't in the Lexus but it did in those jeans. 3. What is the title music? -
Synthetic gearbox oil 15 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Is it worthwhile going for Mobil 1 or similar? Gear change is sightly notchy, particularly 2nd. I regularly look at a forum for air-cooled BMW bikes, and general consensus is that fully synthetic transmission oil makes an enormous difference. I realise that I'm not comparing like with like, but I'd be interested to hear other folks' views. -
Omega Diesel - Rough Idle Running 12 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I own a 96 Vauxhall Omega 2.5 TD. 72K. This is the BMW unit. When the engine gets to full operating temperature tickover becomes lumpy. Otherwise it runs fine. I recently replaced the inlet manifold gaskets as part of a glowplug replacement, so it's not pulling in air. -
VARIOUS - PART EXCHANGE LIMBO? 27 Jan 2025 (Forum)
x1 in 2020, x1 in 2021, x2 in 2022, x11 in 2023, x6 in 2024. They include x2 Petrol Minis 06 & 08, x1 Petrol BMW 08, x2 Diesel VWs 12 & 14 Reg. Have you noticed this happening anywhere near you in the UK? Is it due to the Green agenda? -
Mazda CX-5 - Buying a used car 12 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Though I don’t think there is much difference with the horsepower between the Mazda 5/CX-5. Any useful advice, I like the BMW X3, just too expensive and costly.
