• Tow car for boat. 28 Jun 2012 (Forum)
  I know that it will be a dog but it will only be used to launch and recover the boat, plus tow a box trailer to the dump. Any suggestions will be appreciated, particulally concerning the low ratio box. Thanks. Scranbag. Scotland. P.S. I sugested a Fergason Tractor but my wife gave me a slap!!

  I am 6'4", my 13 year old girls are 5'6" and 5'2" respecively. they are still growing. We need a LOT of legroom. 2) Pulls a tipper trailer fully laden at 2.7 tonnes. The disco has a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes but I wouldn't like to tow this weight with it, so something that "boasts" a similar towing weight would be good. 3) Is 4 wheel drive with diff lock. I would gladly go to the more modern traction control as is on the TD5.

  Car starts from cold runs for three seconds then wont start again . Bump start not enough to start it but towing for 400 yards turning ignition on and off it starts then may work all day . But sometimes just wont start till towed   HELP Fault codes says egr fault so fitted a new one .
• Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 crd - Drive train vibration 21 Jul 2010 (Forum)
  This 2005 car has been great since the new steering rack last year (see previous) now I have a curious intermittent drive train vibration which only occurs when towing a two hourse trailer up a medium hill at about 50 to 60. Very occasionaly it occurs on the flat at about 70 when not towing. It feels like drive shaft/ gearbox but could be engine related. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

  Comments on the reliability index are not encouraging(!) If not the Shogun -an alternative please, must have 4WD diesel and auto, to tow max 2000kg. Thanks.

  Dropping into M40 sevrices today I parked towards the back, behind the well marked and signed "Caravan only" bays. These are, unsurprisingly, double length. Some unfortunate turned up with his rig in tow, unable to park in any designated spot because each row (maybe 20?) was full of single (mostly small) cars and a few white vans. There wasn't a single bay which had a caravan in. I can remember coming across this when towing, and it really is frustrating.

  It has been a great towcar for his huge double axle caravan with that torquey 204bhp straight 6. However, the fuel economy was pretty dire and the towing took major strain on the tired mechanical components of the car. So now we are on the lookout for a big diesel that will tow a large caravan and still be relatively economical for day to day use. The budget is as cheap as possible.

  Octavia VRS looks an option still but it seems only factory fitted. Anyone any suggestions as need to occasionally tow a small trailer and small 4m boat. 4x4 is useful for slippery launches. Any other advice on towbars appreciated. It seems a lot of sporty cars are no longer homologated? for towbars and there's no towing weight on V5c then you should not fit one even if you can.

  hi guys new to the site but saw a topic on caravans, DO YOU REALLY HATE US??????? I have been towing caravans for the past 15 years and have just updated to a 18' and I like to think that I am considerate enought to pull over when I can to let all the frustrated motorists fly by, I live in the great land down under and we have a great following of folk on the road we have done our bit now its time to enjoy. so on behalf of all those who tow please be patient we will pull over when we can after all we are in no hurry

  It is an electric tipper, with a replacment value of around £2.5k. The vehicle insurance has 3rd party cover for towing it. I am advised to steer clear of insuring it on the towing vehicle policy, even if they would consider it, as a claim on it would hinder the NCD. Apparently a stand alone policy wouldn't. Does anyone have any suggestions as to underwriters or brokers?

  I'm looking at a Nissan Maxima on a 'K'plate 3.0litre V6 all the toys. It's an auto, and has towbar with twin socket on the back, so it's probably been used for towing a van. 108K miles, and looks tidy. Am I right in thinking that an engine of that size should tow with no trouble (I don't want to use it for that, tho') and how can I tell if the auto box is O.K.?

    I am gentle with the right foot, yesterday on M5 I was doing around 50 to 55 mph. This issue only occurs when towing an empty or lightly loaded horsebox. No more than 1500Kg.  The towing limit for the vehicle is 3300Kg & I've not tried loads of this weight for sufficient distance to show a problem. Running solo, the temperature never varies whatever the speed or road conditions, even if run for 5 hours continuously.

  Just recently Bought a 2000 Bora 1.9tdi Sport a couple of months ago and its been great up until last weekend when i finaly got around to towing my caravan with it. The problem i am having is that it keeps loosing power i.e it will be quite happily cruising along at 60mph and for no reason it just looses power. We were traveling for over a hour before it began and dropped us down to 20mph (in any gear). it just feels like the turbo has stopped working and the engine wont rev.

  I have been thinking about a Mitsubishi RVR - a grey import, was wondering if anyone could give me any opinions on these vehicles,as they are a "bit different" and might suit my purpose. I need something to occaisionally tow a 4 berth caravan, must have auto transmission ( I would fit a fluid cooler to protect the 'box), and would like diesel for economy purposes. I don't have room for a very long vehicle, either at home or work parking, but would like something with a decent towing capacity, and good room inside - does anyoen know kerbweight and towing capacity for these vehicles as I can't find iton the web.

  Coolant was spilling from the middle of the car and none showing in coolant reservoir. Ended up getting towed home. I have readded some coolant but clearly an issue.  Power steering seems to be working but still cannot get above 2000 rpm. Unsure if its safe to drive to a garage or if i need to get towed there.
