"T" registered Toyota Landcruiser Diesel - Overheating Landcruiser - Crinkly Dave

Hi guys. A pal has a diesel landcruiser, which overheated whilst towing a caravan. He has had a new water pump, radiator, hoses and replacement cylinder head. It will now pull a large caravan up hills without overheating, but when the speed on the motorway exceeds 60mph it overheats quickly, even with the thermostat removed.

Yes, I told him to tow below 60, and comply with UK law, but am curious as to why this overheating still occurs. I can see how the initial problem occurred, but not why it now recurs.

Electric cooling fan wired backwards so it blows rather than sucks?

Seen that one and it does exactly what you say. Works fine, until you hit the speed where the incoming air cancels out the fan action. That creates a "dead zone" with no airflow through the rad and the thing will boil very quickly.

Took me ages to get to the bottom of the problem the first time I saw it.....
