  • Clearing snow from windows 10 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Went out this morning and the usual numpties were out who had cleared the windscreen and not much else, but one BMW 5 series driver really had us puzzled. All windows cleared apart from the back, but they had taken the trouble to clear snow from around the rear window mounted stop light! Another 10 secs and the job could have been done properly.
  • 'new cars' and trading standards 24 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Just a follow up to my earlier post..the supermarket site has just updated its web site and all 7 of these cars are shown as 'year 2006' I have checked out the vin numbers with BMW and the cars were built in November 2004. Surely this is a breach ot trading standards. I did my homework but other unsuspecting buyer swill shell out a large amount of money for something that is not as advertised.
  • Brief update re change of car 29 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I went for a BMW 320D Touring Auto in the end. Not the one I'd first seen (was too late if you remember). Picked it up last Thursday and left the Picasso behind (yayyy!) Drove it from Hampshire to the Cotswolds and back over the weekend and apparently averaged 44mpg which will do me fine.
  • Cracking oil deal at Halfords 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Halfords are doing 5 litre cans of their own brand 5W/40 fully synthetic oil at half price (£15.99) at the moment. Meets Merc 227.3, VW 502.00/505.00 and BMW Longlife, and normally sells at £31.99 I was just about to pay £18.99 for some semi when I came across this, so bought it instead. Cheers DP
  • M1 driver goes 12 miles wrong way 12 Aug 2006 (Forum)
No - not a BMW driver, they never go wrong ;-) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/4777617.stm "Other motorists ignored electronic motorway signs which warned them about the oncoming vehicle and asked them to slow to 20mph. " I have never seen a motorway sign showing 20mph.
  • Corruption in German Car Making 6 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Reading this am's Sunday T***s - a German prosecutor has described the payment of bribes to people within the VW / Audi purchasing group as normal ! The investigation suggest that this is spreading to BMW and also PSA. VW chairman is suggesting this practice is inflating the cost of supply contracts and damaging the firm financially. ------------------------------------------------------- I think I have a solution for him - market the car as desirable with good image (see recent thread from akr) and inflate the price to cover the costs !!!!!!!!
  • mixing diesel and petrol?? 21 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Helo,..my home mechanic mate had a diesel come in which had petrol put in by accident. Not being one to waste fuel -He pumped the petrol out and mixed it with diesel ending up with 70% diesel and 30% petrol. He put it in his 730 petrol bmw and it runs sweeter than it did on petrol so i was wondering what could be a downside to doing this long term?..He is going to try with cooking oil next time> Thanks for any replies

  • SWMBO wants a mini 18 May 2005 (Forum)
SWMBO has finally decided to give up her aversion of driving - (it's only lasted since 1993) and let me buy her a mini - not the bmw type btw. I've had a look on e-bay and the usual sites - question is will £2k get me a half decent runner and what in particular (like what's a rusty sub frame please) should I be looking out for?
  • BMW330Diesel Sport Versus Merc270Diesel 28 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Help Im about to choose a company car and I am looking at a BMW 330DieselSport on a 2003 plate or a Merc E Class 270Diesel Avant Garde on a 2003 plate. I love the drive on the e class but concerned at the complicated electrical problems I have heard about with the car.
  • Motoring in Eire 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Next week I will set off for a long overdue 2-week visit to the Irish Republic, subjecting my BMW 320d to the 4-hour ferry ride from Pembroke to Rosslare. We'll visit Dublin (advised to stop short of actually taking the car into the city!), go across to Galway, and continue the anti-clockwise tour.
  • Dealers! 6 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I've been having some vibration on my car (4 year old BMW 330d), which started suddenly, along with a noticeable engine noise into the cabin. It was due in for a service anyway, so I asked the dealer to have a look - I suggested it might be an engine or gearbox mount.
  • Alloy Wheel Refurbishment 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a company for alloy wheel refurbishment in South London. My car is three years old with factory fit BMW alloys. I have a 3-4 pothole marks, one kerbing mark as well as some discolouration in the finish in places - (road salt corrossion?) I have tried the Wheelbrite number in the FAQ a few times but it seems to ring out and just go to a BT answering service.

  • Bad Car Seats 3 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I have ankylosing spondolitis - a degenerative back problem - and I find lots of cars really bad to drive, some after as little as 20 mins. I find BMWs particularly bad, some Audis are OK but not the ones with "sports" seats, Volvos were fine up to the old 850 but since then I find them agony.
  • Alloy wheels - easy removal 18 Dec 2002 (Forum)
A quick question to the knowledgeable HJ community: what is the best material to minimise the tendency of alloy wheels to stick to their hub? I recently removed all four from my BMW for cleaning. Some needed the help of a rubber mallet, which would not be a very user friendly situation if I scored a flat on a dark night on a motorway. Before re-fitting I gave all of them a light smear of grease - but perhaps there is a bespoke or better product for the purpose?
  • Brake light failure. 8 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The brake lights on my 1981 J REG E36 series BMW 318i,have both suddenly stopped working.I've checked the bulbs and replaced them even though they looked ok to me.I checked the fuse and that also looks ok.Any ideas? P.S. A couple of weeks ago i took the car to have the brake fluid changed as the inspection clock light came on despite still having 4 green led lights lit.
  • Car names 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Now in this world of highly prized trademarks, a car's name seems to be very important and manufacturers are keen to protect them. I seem to remember Peugeot and BMW having a disagreement as some of the numbers each company use were in danger of clashing. I only know (but am sure there are more examples) of a name being used by more than one manufacturer. Maserati Bora VW Bora Is this strictly legal?
  • Milly mystery car ID ? 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I think it is a BMW E36 3 series, saloon with the Mtech style rear spoiler HJ Reckons it’s a facelift Laguna RXE current from May 1998 (‘R’ reg) to April 2000 (‘W’ reg). This model had circular foglights and a protruding spoiler, though it doesn’t seem to protrude as much as on the car in the photo.
  • £3K to spend, what to buy? 2 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Ideally a 1.4 or 1.6. I've been looking at 'mid' sized cars, e.g Puntos, Clios, 306s, but am currently tempted by BMW 316 compacts, though obviously get I'd be looking at an older car if I decide to go 'upmarket'. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of anything going in this pricerange? Thanks in advance, Simon
