What makes you love a car? 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
And do you love yours? I?m prompted to ask by discussion on another thread, in which I said I admired my BMW 320d for its competence and its efficiency but didn?t love it. On reflection I?ve only loved three cars in just under 30 years of car ownership (and ?stewardship? where company cars were concerned) ? -
Cheap sports car 27 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I'm looking at possibly one of the following: Nissan 200SX (94-00 model), Honda Prelude (either models - like the looks of the older one, but think that the more recent one will be less trouble as it is more modern), Honda CR-X, Mazda MX-5, BMW 3 series coupe (or convertible), BMW Z3. Generally I would prefer the more powerful version of a particular model, and manual is essential. Having not driven a rear-wheel driven sports car before (other than family estates, etc) I'm slightly concerned about my life expectancy in a powerful, light, rear-wheel driven car. -

Caveat Emptor 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
You get the impression from the hype and marketing that these are quality cars because it is an open BMW sale, but many of the cars had not been serviced for over two years, many three year old low/average mileage cars had three/four owners. I know that walls have ears, but at this auction they must have had voices as well, and been bidding to the auctioneer, because quite a few of the cars were re-run around again!! -
A convoy of BMW 1 Series 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I got stuck in the middle of one today - felt slightly surreal - uncomfortable by association, as though when waiting at a bus stop, a stranger next to... -
Faster down south. 2 Jul 2004 (Forum)
M6 from j20 down to M6 toll, very nice steady crusing at 70 mph in the middle lane, lorries nicely toodling along at 65 in the inside lane, the BMW lane nosing along at 75-80. All very civilised. People flashing to let you out when needed, everyone going back to the correct lanes.... M6 Toll (dont count I was the only one on it) M42, roadworks - 50 mph limit, everyone toodling along at 50, BMW lane at 60 slowing sedately for the cameras... -
Car for heavy towing 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I had my Land Rover 90 written off last November, and am looking for a car which can pull an one-ton boat up a very steep pier from standstill. I've tried it in a '88 BMW 730 manual, and almost burnt the clutch out. So I want a used car a transfer box - preferably not a heavy 4*4 again. The choice seems to be a Subaru or Audi Allroad (too expensive). BUT - these cars don't have the low gearing I need. -
Mercedes CLS concept car goes production 23 Nov 2003 (Forum)
We\'re sure Mercedes\' decision to go ahead with the CLS would have something to do with the introduction of BMW\'s own large coupe, the 645 Ci. And it would also seem that with the CLS, Mercedes-Benz are now trying to outdo BMW in the weird styling stakes. In production form, the CLS Coupe will come with V6 and V8 engines, and will feature Airmatic pneumatic suspension, seven-speed automatic transmission, Sensotronic brake control, bi-xenon active headlights with see-round-corners function and latest-gen climate control. -
Wheel Balancing 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone. Has anyone any advice about wheel balancing? My situation is this: I've a 2000 BMW 323i. I had a new set of tyres fitted at the weekend (due to vandalism) and now I find the wheels aren't balanced properly, despite paying to have this done when the new tyres were fitted. This came as no surprise to me, as I've had loads of problems with wheel balancing in the past. -
E-Class/5 Series or A6 - Advice Please 7 Oct 2001 (Forum)
There are loads of 528s about though mostly with big mileage. Does anybody have any commnets/advice. I am slightly worried about the bore wear on the BMWs - rightly or wrongly? Also what sort of mpg would you expect out ofthe E300TD (some books give low 30's others 40+). Many thanks in advance for your help Ian -
BMW 320 Touring 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I'm about to buy a 1996N 58k E36 6 cylinder touring on the basis it'll give hatch back like flexibility with the same kind of room as the saloon which... -
BMW M3 - Albany Prestige replacement vehicle 13 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I have recently been involved in a car crash where a third party hit the passenger side of my BMW M3 whilst coming out of a side road which has a give way sign and double hatched markings without stopping at the junction. Whilst he admitted liability on the scene, the company he works for have since then refused to accept liability. -
BMW 3 Series Compact E36 316se M42 engine - loosing / using water and strange cooling heating 10 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Although I don't know how hard he looked as I left the car with him while I was at work and he didn't charge me for and invest, so I suspect he didn't do to much. Spoke to an indipendant BMW specialist (He didn't see the car) and he said it is extreamly rare for them to have the head gasket go. So you see my issue, I cant find a leak and the garage are telling me that its not the head gasket(and there's no mayo) and to confuse me more, the temp drops off in traffic rather than it over heating. -
Audi merc BMW porsche - A car to suit all needs 5 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Mercedes; again the choice between an e class (heart says e63- The last model had 7 seats?) or the m class SUV, which if I'm honest isn't a big contender. BMW; the new f10 5 series touring, can't find any confirmation if there is a forthcoming m5 touring to hold out for, or again, the x5 appears to be a very useable car, probably in diesel guise.. Lastly, the Porsche cayenne. -
B-class - first impressions 27 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Others I test-drove: Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI - very impressive all round and I would have seriously considered it if I could have got a better PCP deal VW Golf Plus 2.0 TDI - much noisier than the Octavia for some reason: lively but not much more room than an ordinary Golf. VW should have done a Mark 5 estate - the Mark 4 was excellent. BMW 320d - lovely to drive - steering response and handling as superb as always with BMWs, but it was no cheaper than another A4 and it didn't quite suit my driving style. You have to concentrate hard to get the best out of a BMW, and I like to relax while still getting a move on. -
Dumb pop-ups=dumb marketing people 14 May 2003 (Forum)
They have succeeded in making me want one of their overpriced vehicles even less than I did already. But today they out-clevered themselves. Hehe! The BMW site I got taken to apologised to me for being down for quote servicing. I think I\'ll flame them with their own medicine and say hey! I get a replacement carwhen you\'re servicing my BMW, why can\'t you provide a replacement site! -
This can't be fake news, surely? 29 Feb 2020 (Forum)
A University of Helsinki study found that (quote) self-centred men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and lacking in empathy are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes (end quote). All German cars, which is possibly significant? All mine have been French ..... :-) -
whats the future for older diesels? 31 Mar 2017 (Forum)
In light of recent comments in the media etc re. diesels being polluting (I've read things about scrappage allowance for diesels) what is the future for older diesel cars? ie the year 2000 to 2010 and the likes of the BMW 530D, Merc 320 CDI and Volvo D5. Will it be that in buying one of these within a few yrs they will be rendered scrap value?! Will the road tax be increased for these type of vehicles so its punitive or will these cars being older be left alone? -
5 series touring or A6 avant 25 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Looking a decent spec (msport or s line) around 13 plate. I'm aware the 5 series was face lifted around this time. My thoughts are the bmw is a bit dated inside and the A6 wins hand down on the interior. Outside I don't think there is much in it. Running costs etc going to be similar I think? What do youcthink? -
Audi A6 - Sat Nav Systems 28 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Hi - does anyone on this forum have any first hand experience of the Audi A6 standard fit sat Nav system (not the upgraded system). The reason I ask is that I have experience of the Mercedes Comand system and the BMW business and professional navigation systems and both are excellent at redirecting when the traffic is problematic and I want to understand if anyone has experience of the A6 system and in particular the traffic management system.
