we're advised to run the aircon at intervals during the winter just to get rid of bugs in the system which can cause a smell. But if its cold outside, will the aircon cut in and achieve the objective, please, folks? Despite doing what I've been told, the car still sometimes smells of old socks.

  • Car Stereo Codes 25 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I have recently bought a 2nd hand Citron AX as a run around. Saddly the radio does not work because it is coded and the previous careful lady owner did not know the code! Can any one recommend a DIY fix for this problem or is it of to the citron dealer or local auto electric?

  • Audi A3 SE TDI 2.0 (2004) - Radiator fans won't stop running (Fan Control Modu 25 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I have what seems to be a common problem which is my radiator fans won't stop running, slowly, (both of them) even with the ignition key off and the engine cold and air-con off.   (If I try to turn the air-con on the econ light stays on and I'm unable to turn econ off.)
  • Can Engineering Graduates 'Hit the ground running' 10 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Does the quality, relevance and depth of training given to today's Engineering Graduates, whilst at University for 3 or 4 years actually enable them to 'hit the ground running' {after completing the short few weeks of 'in-house' familiarisatio/induction training period) immediately after graduation or do they require a significant amount of directed objective training before thay can 'stand on their own two feet' without the need for supervision and technical guidance from senior engineering staff (or from some other external training provider) ?

  • Chevrolet Epica - Dud Battery 7 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Latest in the saga of Epica ownership, had a bit of difficulty starting the car recently, thought it was cold/short runs, so my friendly Vaux dealerscame and boosted the car for me, and then I made sure properly charged, and less short runs, till yesterday when car started but only just, and windscreen washer level warning light coming on intermittently, with fluid level and strength good, also the glow plug warning light intermittently not coming on on the run through checks when switching the ignition to position 2.
  • Peugeot 407 2.0 Hdi (136bhp) - Depolution Fault 8 Jun 2011 (Forum)
They have suggested in this order: A. Add Addittive Fluid, £11.00, run for 2 wks, make long runs, run diesel low, see if it works, which I have done, 4 days in now, no luck so far. B. Do Dignostics, £42.50 + VAT, if required do Download for upgrade software extra £30.00 + VAT C .
  • VW Golf Mk IV 1.8 20v - Starting problems - help! 5 May 2011 (Forum)
I have to use the accelerator to start the car, and this produces a strong smell of petrol, but once running, the engine seems to run perfectly well. If i were to start the car in this way, turn it immediately off and then try again, it starts perfectly. From hot, the car always starts first time. The stater motor was replaced recently and a full service carried out, but this made no difference.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.9 Running fine, now won't start! 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
1998 Peugeot 306 Diesel Turbo. Until yesterday was running perfectly, put the rear heated screen on after starting yesterday morning and the radio went off. Little strange, but radio came back on after a second, so wasn't to concerned. Drove it about 40 miles, just switched to radio off to make sure.
  • Land Rover Discovery (1989 - 1998) - 97 2.5 300 TDI starting problems after lift pump s 30 Nov 2009 (Forum)
In desperation, I refitted the old pump, again with olives. Now the car will start and run as long as you want it to, but it is an absolute swine to start, cranking for 20-30 seconds before firing up. Once it's running, all seems well. I'm tearing my hair out. The joints all look good, there's no sign of diesel anywhere, but it's a swine to start.
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 95 1171 Turns over but will not start 5 Sep 2009 (Forum)
1995 Renault Clio 1 petrol - 1171cc ("Energy" engine) Old Clio usually runs well, but has had a long term habit of not starting. When this happens, the engine turns over (fast ? as if little compression) but makes no attempt to start or even splutter or cough. The engine then will normally light up when all switched off and retried, and runs smoothly as if nothing has happened.
  • Diesel reliability HDI technology 29 Jun 2007 (Forum)
However I double my oil changes from new with carefull running in for 3000 miles with a very gradual increase in revs, when starting from cold I allow to tick over for 30 seconds before I move & I drive gently without turbo boost untill the temp gauge is out the blue, I don't change down to overtake I use the torque very rarely going over 2500 rpm, mostly 1600-2250, I always use a major brand of fuel ( & not supermarket ) I use fuel line cleaner every 3000 miles ,Always allow the engine a slowing down period after a hard run & allow to idle for at least minute before I switch off.
  • Simmering a turbo "properly"? 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I understand the concept of giving the engine (and thus the oil) a few minutes to warm up before caning the car, and I've also read about "simmering" the turbo after a run by leaving the engine running for a moment or two at idle, which gives oil time to pass through the system and cool the turbo a little before switching off. I live on the Isle of Man and my drive to and from work involves a small amount of town driving, a blast over the wonderful mountain road (part of the TT circuit), and then a small amount of town driving.
  • Vectra cut out / stall at speed. 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Turned the engine off, 5 minutes later started her back up and almost immediately the engine light came on, and it cut out. When running on petrol it idles poorly. Idle control valve possibly blocked? When running on LPG it runs smoothly. I called out the RAC and half hour later when chap arrived restarted the engine, and no engine light, he checked the engine etc and tried to replicate fault - nothing!

  • Volvo 240 Pitfalls and Benefits 20 Jun 2004 (Forum)
A friend of ours has a Toyota Camry 3.0GX V6 (1993 K) and he's had that converted to run on LPG but has had it done properly by AutoGas North West and that runs like a treat on the gas and it's certainly paid for itself - his other vehicle that he's had done is a 1987 Toyota SpaceCruiser and although that's had the same treatment at AutoGas North West that's a carburettor whereas the Camry is Fuel Injected but on both those vehicles a good job has been done.
