  After 50 miles the gearbox failed, and my local Lexus dealer (superb service ? not the one I bought the car from) fitted a replacement box under warranty. While the car was on the ramp they noted and drew my attention to some irregularities and advised that I have the car inspected by the RAC. I did this and the RAC report identified that the vehicle had been in a significant front end shunt, and had been poorly repaired.

I'll let you know of any developments and try to get more specific information on the root cause of the fault - it may be worth including in the Car-by-Car breakdown. If anyone else has come across this in a Leon or other VAG TDi (especially the 110 bhp version), I'd like to hear what happened in other instances.

  They haven't really. They've just replaced the alignment rings. I'm confident about this because they won't give us any paperwork showing that a new gearbox has been put in. I'm also confident about it because the gear change is now awful. It's extremely difficult to get the car to go into first unless you wait quite a while for the oil to warm up.
