Handbrake Calamity 21 May 2007 (Forum)
Should I go back to mini or is this due to the fact that I did not put the car in gear. Having been used to an automatic I did not really know that this was essential when parking on an incline. In other words is this my own stupid fault or could there be something wrong with the car? Of course, there is also the matter of insurance - would household buildings/contents cover the garage door and would there be a query over the safety of the car? -
Audi A4 or BMW 5 Series Touring? 20 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Our requirements are fairly straightforward - good/big boot space - good fuel economy - annual mileage circa. 8,000-12,000 miles - manual or automatic ( what's best?) Budget is anything up to £17,000 but it might be that you advise us to spend £10-£15k on an older Audi with higher mileage to get the best all round deal which is what we're all after. -
Volvo V70 TDi classic - opinions ? 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have noticed that most of these cars for sale have very high mileages ~100K+ Do these cars still have plenty of life left in them, or will they become complete money-pits.....? A lot of them also seem to be automatics - I quite like driving an auto, but have only had japanese ones so far (with no problems)- What is the reliability of the V70 auto-box like, especially at these sort of mileages. Is it a "good" box to drive (I know some autos are not great) I have read HJs backroom article and note the cambelt/water pump change, but are there any other issues on these vehicles that needs to be considered when buying. -
Renault madness 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
We bought a Renault Grand Scenic (7 seater) Last year...Nice looking car, great features, okay to drive. I was only concerned about two things. 1. It has an automatic parking brake. (A kind of fly-by-wire device)... French....Bound to go wrong. It did. Not only is is a complete pain to use when trying to park on a hill...It also broke. No handbrake...Whole new computer control etc. -

Computer Related Questions - Volume 73 24 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Secondly, does the history simply amount to a list of links to everything previously visited or is the actual content of each page viewed automatically saved on the PC? Given the proportion of chaff v. wheat on the web I don't want my pc rapdily filling up with junk. Finally, just to reiterate, we're using an old W98 equipped machine and are somewhat less than PC literate so please keep it simple folks :) TIA as always! -
Nissan Primera 1998 problems 19 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My 1998 2.0 petrol automatic Nissan Primera had been good as gold from when I bought it last april on 26k miles to this summer. It now has 56k miles. Recently, though It has had a real problems which a host of franchises, independent and specialist garages have been unable to locate. -
Are vehicles more reliable? 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
A single car may have as many as 70 different processors, controlling everything from anti-lock brakes and automatic transmissions to cruise control and fuel injection. Failures to those embedded systems account for a third of all warranty claims. Controlling the costs of warranties has big benefits. Currently, warranty costs drag down profits of automobile industry by 3 percent. -
'Low mileage' taxi 2 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I suppose it could have been owned by an elderly chap who only did 3,000 miles p.a. for its first 10 years, bringing it up to a more respectable ~25k annually since then, but an E300D is hardly the car for such a low mileage, especially when in the late 80s, if money were no object, you'd almost automatically have chosen a petrol. The other possibility of course is that it had actually done 1.216M miles (70k pa!). Incidentally, it wasn't even the oldest cab I saw that night - there's also a D-plate Volvo 740 floating aroud the town; no idea of the mileage though -
Motor Bike Bashing Thread! 6 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I had a close one last night having overtook a car on M8, looked in mirror, signalled and pulled in to inside lane just as motorbike went whizzing past on my inside. When driving at night I look in mirror and brain automatically checks the headlights in each lane. It is very hard to distinguish a motorbike headlight travelling between the lines of traffic. So bikers, why do you do this? Have you a death wish? You will always come off second best, even if it is a car driver's error. -
Mercedes CLS concept car goes production 23 Nov 2003 (Forum)
In production form, the CLS Coupe will come with V6 and V8 engines, and will feature Airmatic pneumatic suspension, seven-speed automatic transmission, Sensotronic brake control, bi-xenon active headlights with see-round-corners function and latest-gen climate control. The German giant reckons that since the CLS combines the shape of a coupe with the convenience of a saloon, it offers more added value than other coupes. -
Undisguised new Volvo S40 pictures 4 Sep 2003 (Forum)
If I recall correctly, this is not allowed, regardless of how the car actually performs, when steering column mounted, because of risk to knee in a heavy collision. Apparently even not having an audible seat belt reminder automatically precludes four stars, and whether NCAP is contrived or not, it does sell cars. Will be interesting to see what Volvo have done with the V40 replacement, the V50. -
VW Self Diagnosis 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Since 1996 I've had a Polo, Golf and am now on a Passat and it was only recently that I witnessed diagnosis equipment being plugged into the vehicle. The rear door would not lock/unlock using the keyfob, central locking button, nor the automatic drive off lock. It could only be unlocked/locked manually. The engineer plugged the computer into the car and straight away knew that a connector was loose in the door. I am not mechanically minded but I am very electronic/computer minded and reading about the diagnostic software at http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/ had got me fascinated. -
BMW X5 3.0d Sport Extras 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The dealers suggest that I should buy a whole range of extras, including tinted glass, running boards, leather seats (heated), automatic gearbox, 6 CD changer, and a few others. Whilst I do not quibble with the auto box, and perhaps the leather seats (unheated?), I am a bit dubious about the others. My guess is that they will push up the selling price (and dealers commission?) -
ever heard of this? 29 May 2003 (Forum)
He was an experienced mechanic and at a garage he worked at a few years ago they had a problem with a car with an automatic gearbox which kept sticking in one gear and wouldn?t change up. He remembers it was either a BMW or Mercedes but wasn?t sure which. When everything failed they rang the manufacturers technical service and asked for help. -
VR6 auto gearbox problems 22 May 2003 (Forum)
I own a 1995 Golf VR6 automatic which has covered 57,000 miles. Having noticed a slight whining noise that coincides with the auto-box changing up at around 35-40mph I had a VW technician road-test it with me. Further checking with his diagnostic kit revealed faults with the gear-box and engine. -
Toyota Imports 12 Nov 2001 (Forum)
In September this year my wife bought a silver Yaris Verso GLS Automatic from Trade Sales in Slough. I checked it very carefully and it was to full UK GLS spec. The car was imported from Belgium and there were a number of similar models at the delivery centre. I eventually got the Vehicle Registration Document(V5) which showed it as a grey, 3 door CDX. ? -
Review of 3 Scenics 8 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Another gimmick, but again, one, which I have warmed to and used. Automatic handbrake takes a bit of getting used to as well. When you switch the engine off, the handbrake automatically comes on. When you lift up the clutch, ready to drive away, the handbrake releases itself. -
