Is it me or is it the car ? 14 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I am not doing anything that my 1.8t Golf Gti wasnt more than capable of and I'm not being stupid - maybe enthusiastic ! Car: BMW120d, RWD, Sports suspension, Run flat tyres. It occurs to me I am now driving a RWD car with a heavier engine upfront along with run flat tyres which, to use a racing analogy feel like a very hard compound. So I'm wondering if I should take it back to the dealer to get the offside front checked out or do you guys/gals reckon that maybe it is just that a different driving style is required and that its just because there is a bigger lump upfront now (apart from me !). -
Weired Golf GTI problem 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
It's happened twice and he has taken it garage can find the fault. The symptoms are as follows: Hot engine (normal long run) under deceleration the car stops as if there is a fuel stoppage, in actual fact the fuel pump fuse has blown. When the fuse is replaced the car will start and run OK below 2000rpm. Above 2000rpm the fuse blows again! -
compression saab900 16 Oct 2004 (Forum)
In fact it is \'lumpy\', compared to our 9000 but the car seems to run pretty well and does not burn oil or water and temperature seems stable. The performance on gas is similar to petrol. What are the implications of this compression variation in your view? Do we need to worry? -
306 xsi 99 erratic revving 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I bought a 306 xsi on a v plate and from the day I left the garage I've been getting problems with it. When running normal it loses power and "kangaroos" as though it is running out of fuel.It also idles erraticaly and has stalled a few times. I took the car back to the garage and it was blamed on an oil pressure sensor. -
Extended Services/Tuning Boxes 1 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Is there any wonder that buyers of ex fleet and many privately owned turbo diesels run into turbo and fuel pump problems at less than 50k miles on the used car market, and then get an adverse opinion of the vehicle as a result of abuse by the previous owner/driver.??? After visiting BMW forums for some years, it is now common practice for most turbo diesels to run 17k to 20k before oil changes, which (Like H.J.) -
Medium/small estate for £2000? 7 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My first reaction was "Mondeo estate". The situation is that he is retired, wants something cheap to run, doesn't need a powerful car, but does need a bit of space to carry round an electric wheelchair in the boot. He then mentioned an Astra estate as a possibility. I suggested something japanese for reliability. -
2nd car diesel v petrol 1 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My calculations suggest a diesel is the better option, as the higher rate of mileage more than offsets the slightly higher running costs. Have I overlooked anything? Is there anyone with a similar experience who can offer advice? Other information: My journeys will all be local, probably covering no more than 200-250 miles/month. -
Overheated Rover 214 - Help! 15 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It's on its second head gasket as the first one went at 55K about 4 years ago. Car runs perfectly. If it is the head gasket whats it going to cost I'm in the New Forest -
Rover 414 stalling 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
It's been a great car and a good runner - until now. It has 125,000 on the clock. It start perfectly and runs well for the first 20-30 minutes. Depending on the air temperature, if it gets to full running temperature, at speed, the revs can severely dip on occassions. At low revs, it stalls suddenly. This usually happens at traffic lights, round-abouts - the worst possible place. -
power loss - Merc C240 7 Aug 2003 (Forum)
It will cruise along at 70 fine, no problems, but when I start to overtake it\'s not very energetic. It will change down, and accelerate, but once you hit 4,500 rpm, it runs out of steam. I\'ve managed to get it up to 4,750 rpm or thereabouts, but no more. Car feels as if it\'s struggling to go faster - held back in some way. Kickdown, just the same: it changes down but runs out of go at 4,500 rpm. -
Emissions, and stuff 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have never run this engine to 5000 rpm before. James Bond. People behind were putting their headlights on, with all the smoke. Never seen anything like it before in my life. After 3 miles in 2nd gear, there's no smoke. -
Car of the past for the future. 12 May 2003 (Forum)
If you like to buy and run older cars, I'm thinking in the region of, L(93/94), M(94/95) and N(95/96) with something around 100K miles for around £1000, and you would like the following qualities 1). A workhorse. 2). Reasonably good styling. 3). -
Exchange of fluids! 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
We have a 2 year old Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi, with the PD engine. It has covered just under 45,000 km and we hope, as pensioners, to keep the car in good running order until WE are not! I asked my Skoda dealers to carry out the 45,000 service last Monday and in addition requested they change the engine coolant, brake fluid and gearbox oil, plus the air and pollen filters. -
306 DTurbo starting 16 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I changed the glow plugs today but this seems to have made the problem worse. Now it will fire and stall, several times until it will eventually run. Once started, it runs fine, plenty of power and it is not using any coolant or oil (Headgasket was done 6K ago). I thought it could be air getting into the fuel system somewhere, so I pumped the priming bulb several times. -
Buying my company Volvo? 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
After 20 years of company cars my employer is pulling the plug and giving me a monthly allowance instead. As I do 20-25K a year, mostly private miles, this won't let me run a nice new Volvo as I've been doing. My Volvo is 3 years old, has done 75,000 miles. Nothing's gone wrong with it apart from headlight bulbs and a mirror that didn't heat up any more. Its the previous model, Classic with loas dof extars as the run out model. 140 bhp. -

Please help 11 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Am having big problems with the Cavalier. Was running really lumpy today and not idling well at all - put it down to the bane of every Vauxhall owner's life, the idle control valve. Not so I think - I thought I'd clean up the electrics etc with some WD40 - took the car out and thought I'd run the engine hard. -
Wrong oil again!! 5 Mar 2001 (Forum)
For the third time in as many weeks I have had to deal with the situation of the wrong grade oil causing severe running problems with a modern engine. This time it was a Zetec 1.6 Escort which would only run in a series of hundred yard (metre) hops before losing power and stalling. When rested for a few minutes it would start up reluctantly then stall again. -
When to change 7 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Against a well spec'd new Golf / Focus we've been offered £7,400 for the pair - apparently they're worth about the same each.Question - does common sense say get rid of them now or would I lose in the long run by running one or both of these cars for another 5(?) years. I'm so sickened by the depreciation I feel like never buying another new car). Would I get much less for them at auction thereby freeing up cash to look for a better purchase deal, perhaps at a car supermarket.
