New Car for Aged Parents 19 May 2006 (Forum)
So a car with a higher driving position is essential (they definitely don't want a proper 4x4 type vehicle). The car must be automatic (mum hasn't driven a manual in over 25 years) and preferably diesel. It needs to have four doors for carrying passengers. They also own a small Seat which is used for most of the short local journeys so the replacement would be mostly used for longer cross country trips (mostly A roads as my mum dislikes the speed of motorways and my dad dislikes being told he's going too fast at 65mph). -
Used Car Problems. 2 May 2006 (Forum)
It drove well on the test drive, but after collecting it, it became apparent that it would not reverse up even the slightest gradient- the (automatic) gearbox was just slipping. There were further problems- airbag and ABS lights were coming on (these are MOT failures, despite the car having a newly issued MOT) and the heater would not blow hot air. -
Almera V Corolla 5 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Sorry to start another thread, but have just been doing a little more car-hunting in my quest for a car as-dependable-appliance. I thought that a Toyota Corolla automatic would be outside my price range, but have found one for only £1000 more than the sort of prices on offer for a similar age Almera (2004), so I have been wondering if that's worth thinking of. The Corolla has 25,000 miles rather than the Almer's 10,000 but otherwise the two look similar. -
Replacement 7 seater 11 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Frankly, we probably don't need a car the size of the Trajet, but seven seats is very handy. We want automatic and whilst diesel would be handy, we probably only do 10,000 miles pa, so its not vital. So we are looking at the following vehicles: - Zafira Verso Grand Scenic is there anything else, and are there any recommendations regarding these vehicles including best value spec and engine/gearbox combinations? -
Hit dog - report? 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My questions are: 1) is it still necessary to report dog accidents, now they don't have licences? 2) what should one do with an injured dog in the middle of the road? 3) is the owner automatically committing an offence by letting a dog run loose, or only if it actually causes an accident? Incidentally, it was extremely difficult to find a live policeman to report it to. The two stations I passed en route to work were shut. -
Rover 75 2.0L v6 oil problem 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Can anybody help, I'm now desperate. I have a Rover 75 2.0L v6 automatic on an X plate. I originally was getting a horrible ammonia type smell when travelling 'remove this bit and replace with the @ symbol' speed with window open, then the engine blew the thermostat housing off, took to garage , told head gasket blown & warped head, and have fitted a secondhand engine with only 9,000 miles use. -

Toyota Supra 20 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The first that caught her eye was a red 924. But the elder son told her that was not real Porsche. So I have a grey 1988 Supra. Automatic and not twin turbo but it has all the bells and whistles and has power enough for me. Cosmetically it needs a bit of work. And despite a total lack of mechanical dexterity Im going to have a go myself. -
IAM driving techniques 17 Nov 2004 (Forum)
For example, letting other people in or being let in yourself is much easier with eye contact. 2. Gears in neutral at traffic lights. Ok for an automatic compared to park - I don't like the reversing lights of the car in front to come on when queued. Since being taught to drive, I have always put it in first to be ready to pull away at the right time. -
1996 vw golf vr6 auto- no go in gears 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
greetings! My car has a 4sp automatic box. Earlier on this year (january) i noticed the gears began to slip in gear D, usually around the 2nd or 3rd upshift. I didnt take much notice of it. As time went on the shifting became worst, which i then resorted to using gear 3 for my travels. -
The leather interior - it's a rip-off 21 Apr 2004 (Forum)
A post by Cardew on small automatics, in which it's suggested that a £1,000 or so premium for an autobox is too steep, reminds me that the typical £1,000 or more for a leather interior is the same. I once heard a guy who?d previously been a big-cheese in the motor industry say that the leather interior is a rip-off at the sort of money charged. -
vw sharan auto gearbox 23 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Speaking to my regular service engineer he swears blind there can be no contact between a dodgy throttle potentiometer and an automatic gearbox fault. Can anyone help? God bless Rev Gary Cadge -
My parents\' car II 25 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Both find it difficult twisting round to look when reversing, my mother in particular would benefit from an automatic and a car which is easy to clamber in and out of. So instead of a conventional replacement for their Passat (a dealer-serviced 99V TDi 110 SE in very good nick with 36,000 on the clock) I\'m thinking of something which may be taller and perhaps has parking sensors. -
Omega Auto Gearbox Problem 9 Aug 2003 (Forum)
However if I put it in sports mode and accelerate with the pedal flat to the floor the box fails to change up and as it hits redline I get a warning light and the text " Automatic gearbox". The gearbox then goes into limp home mode. Once the engine has been turned off the gearbox is fine. If I drive in the above manner but as I approach redline(or before) I lift of very very slightly the box changes up as normal. -
High pitch noise when bearing right? 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
s comes from the front of the car most likely the driver side wheel. When I turn the steering to the left the noise will automatically go. Also when the noise is occurring if I tap on the brake pedal it will go for a few seconds. I have noticed that after a fair journey the driver side wheel is fairly hot, especially after driving on a winding road. -
Volvo 760 Behaving Badly 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Hello people I post this description of faults in the hope somebody out there has had the same problems. The car is a 1987 Volvo 760 2.3 Turbo automatic, the problems are as follows; When the car is started it idles correctly, select drive and then select park or neutral and the engine revs repeatedly from idle to approx. 1600 RPM over a two second cycle. -
Toyota Timing belt 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The timing belt had snapped, however the repair bill was £91! Apparently this engine does not automatically smash pistons into valves and so write off engines. Is Toyota being clever here or is this just luck of the draw? Any advice on choosing a car with similar bombproofness? By the way the garage that did the repair said that the first garage should have twigged timing belt when the ignition timing needed resetting. -
Avensis vs Legacy 14 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have any experience of these cars particularly the subaru? Most of the subaru 2.5's are automatic does this go better with the 4 wheel drive system (less chance of the clutch being knackered) My heart says subaru but my head says the avensis will be way ahead on fuel consumption and general reliability. -
F Reg Nissan Micra - Starting Problems 29 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The car has been fine all year so I'm assuming that it a problem caused by the damp/cold (the car seems to suffer with a lot of condensation, which is why I thought the leads / spark plugs idea might have been the one). The car has an automatic NOT manual choke if that makes any difference and it is not a "short run only" vehicle! -
Somewhat disabled but still kicking! 24 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Also reliability as he wont be doing any more roadside repairs. Almost certainly the new car will be an automatic and not too large for ease of parking, but with carrying capacity for possible mobility aids. Cost is not the major issue. A Yaris Verso came to mind but I would welcome any suggestions from those with greater insight than me.
