I intend to change the pads on my niece's car at the weekend. Any special tools/hints required?
  • My used car needs the brake pads changed after 13,000 miles - should the dealer have replaced them before it was sold? 20 Jan 2018 (Ask HJ)
I bought a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class not too long ago. I've since discovered the brake discs and pads were subject to concern on a previous MoT. With...

  • Ford Focus 2015 1.5 tdc - Ford Focus 2015 1.5 tdci brake fluid disappearing 30 May 2024 (Forum)
My neighbour has a ford focus 1.5 tdci 2015 with approx 50'000 miles on it, It has started loosing brake fluid, not loads, possibly needs topping up by 100ml twice a week. There are no visable leaks from any calipers, brake hose or drums. Overnight nothing drips onto the alloys and it doesn't leave damp patched on the drive.
  • Hand brake clicks 8 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Now, I owned many cars in the past, some of them I took to over 300,000 miles and I always pull the hand brake without pushing the button as It let me know if there are too many clicks, usually 5-6 clicks is the standard and anything above mean that I will need to adjust the cable. To the point, I never had a hand brake failure as I can always tell when it is about to go well in advance.
  • Mini cooper d 13 - Cause of brake judder 23 Nov 2019 (Forum)
The brakes also seem to lock a bit under heavy(ish) force. Also, the pedal does not feel spongy and is not sinking to floor under pressure so I dont think it's the master.  Next step I took was to change the front discs and bleed the system.
  • Toyota Auris hybrid Icon Plus Hatchback - Brake click 27 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Well I have had this car on a 15 plate for around 5 weeks now. Generally I am happy except for an annoying brake click. When travelling at high (50mph or low 10mph) the brakes work without a click. But if I am braking from say 30 mph then I get a click similar to lightly dropping a ball bearing on a hard surface.
  • Ford Transit (2006 - ) - Bad Mechanic, what now? 27 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I?ve a 1972 Ford Transit Camper. I was having a brake problem with loosing fluid so called out a mobile mechanic. He diagnosed a problem with the rear brakes, asking me to get the parts. As instructed I bought, shoes, fit kit, cylinders for both sides and he came and rebuilt the brakes.
  • Mazda 323 (1998 - 2003) - 01 1.6 Warning lights illuminated - Brake problem? 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Level in the brake fluid reservoir is fine. Thanks to Google there are other owners complaining of the same symptoms. Lots of speculation as to its possible cause, e.g. speed sensors, costly ABS modules, but no definite fixes!
  • SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - 04 2.0 EGR and Brake faults 28 Jun 2009 (Forum)
t light the engine management light, the other two follow after about 30 mins of driving with the engine management light. The brakes are fine, the car hesitates slightly on the motorway but is mostly O.K, and it has just passed its MOT with the engine management light on. Can anyone link the EGR and Brake boost faults, I am concerned that the EGR faults may be a red herring and replacing it may be a costly mistake.
  • Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - 1989 1124 Brake lights stopped working, any clues/ 28 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I could go to a Citroen dealer but would a motor factor/Halfords/eBay have such an item? To test the brake switch I take it I just short the two wires together. If the lights come on then I take it that the switch is faulty. Thanks for your replies. Q.
  • 99 Megane - fog lights on when braking 7 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I've just been out in my 1999 Megane hatch, and the first time I have used it in the dark for ages. When braking the rear fog light telltail dimly lights up on the dash - indicating the fog lights are "sort of" on. I've asked the missus to press the brakes while I've had a look 'round the back of the car but I can't tell really if they are on or not.
  • 1982 Porsche 928S - no brake lights 28 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Hi all Guess what - my 1982 Porsche 928S has developed an electrical problem (what a suprise!). The brake lights won't come on when the brake pedal is pressed. They have worked perfectly since I bought the car, but they have just packed up (I have got the stop light warning light on the dashboard constantly lit).
  • BMW E39 Brake and side lights issue 20 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I have got the display showing the outline of the car and both light indicators at the rear of the car, which according to the manual means brake lights fault (can also be actual lights as well). When I have checked , I found the brake light bulbs out. So, quick trip down to local shop, then remove rear of clusters to replace the bulbs. Once I had removed both sides, I realised that the 2 bulbs blown where in different positions on each side.
  • xsara 2.0hdi estate brake problems 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi , I have had various problems with my brakes on my front drivers side pads . What it is doing is brakes are binding slightly on this side , so wearing the pads down to metal after 3-4 months , Passenger side all ok no problems . I have replaced the caliper and discs/pads , no fix ,.So booked into garage and had discs replaced again and pads and flexihose on both sides done and system pressure bleed .
  • Brake squeal Clio 1.4 Sport (R-Reg) 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I've recently replaced the pads and discs on a friend's R-plate 1.4 Clio Sport. Previously there was a periodic squeak coming from the brakes and my friend reported juddering through the brake pedal. We suspected a warped disc or something similar, however even with new components the squeak remains (although it is less pronounced and the juddering appears to have been addressed).
  • How much should it cost?... 9 Jun 2006 (Forum)
So, I left it with the garage, they say it will be at least 2 days befor ethey can do the work. I have heard that the two front brake pads will need replacing from from my Haynes manual, as you shouldn't just do the one, otherwise uneven braking. I am pretty sure they will have to replace the brake discs also :P As I did leave it a while.
  • Jaguar MK2 servo 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have recently restored a 1960 MK2 and installed a new remote servo (Lockheed) together with new master cyl, brake lines and hoses and new calipers. The system is filled with Castrol brake fluid (not silicon). The problem I am having is that at the first application of the brakes there seems to be too much servo.
  • Drum Brakes - Ford Ka 5 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Surely the hydraulic cylinder would take up the 'adjustment' on applying the footbrake? The brakes are diagonally connected so surely there was sufficient pressure in the cylinder or the front brake would not have worked correctly? The handbrake I think I can explain. There was such a lot of travel on the handbrake lever attached to the shoe, it was actually hitting the centre of the hub (where the bearings are held.)
  • Laguna accident +Brakes 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The laguna just has some dirty scuff marks on the front bumper (must have been about 10mph speed) so it survived really well. EXCEPT THE BRAKES They didnt feel right while standing on them during accident and now seem distinctly odd to me. I can sit in the car with the engine running, and press the brake pedal hard, and it will slowly sink till the pedal touches the floor.
