  I view the prospect of having to use the Omega?s space saver spare with some trepidation, and with horror if caught out whilst towing. (we do a fair bit of long distance continental towing). I seem to remember hearing that some new cars don?t bother with a spare at all ? relying on a tube of tyre weld or some such. (some MGs IIRC).

  I've looked on the Real MPG section of HJ and on Fuelly and it seems like I could expect around 19 mpg or more. There's also the old ML320 but I'm not sure on economy. A Shogun LWB has a braked towing weight of 3,200kg and the ML320 would be 3,365kg IIRC. This would be fine as I could downplate a 3.5 ton trailer to that weight and still be able to tow pretty heavy cars. I'd also be open to considering a cheap petrol van with a good towing weight but I'm pretty sure no such thing exists.

  Hi I currently tow with a 1993 2.5TD Pajero. Had it 2 years and pulls my 1.5Ton caravan fine. The wife and I though have decided to get a newer car, and well, we both like the 4.x4 as its got us out - and a few friends of some scrapes when towing so we would like to continue to have one.

  Are any of the MPV's man enough for the job ( I think the tow weights do come within most manufacturer guidelines, but I am concerned about safety and handling using an MPV and not a 4x4 Thanks for any advice!

  I thought it could be classed as an obstruction and hence the police could arrange for the vehicle to be towed away. Which would incur storage and tow away costs.

  Recently followed a Freelander along a main road near central Birmingham. It was towing a small device mounted on something about the size of 2 pram wheels about 15" apart slung beneath the tow bar was a white box about the size of a biscuit tin this had a clearance of about 20mm from the road surface.

  I would like to be able to tow a trailer that would carry cars, however my license does not permit large trailers, how do i go about getting this added to my license? do i need to take a trailer towing test? has anyone had to do this and how much did it cost?

  In March I was towing my horsebox 1000kg with a 700kg horse and a 200kg pony so below the towing capacity.  I was on a motorway in 5th gear cruising along when I noticed thick black smoke coming out of the exhaust, next thing the car began to accelrate by itself, I came off at the next junction and it seemed fine, I got back on the motorway and shortly after it done the same again.

  DVLA must have records of the last keeper, if he failed to notify them who he sold it to he was liable to a fine anyway for that omission. Would it not be sensible for councils to tow away such vehicles, there is clearly something fishy about the drivers, even if the car appears to be  taxed/insured/MOT'd.   The driver would then either report it stolen, in which case he can be nailed for the due fines, or he is never heard from again, which confirms suspicions.

  Took my Jeep in for a safety recall and, as it failed, the Dealer installed a cross-car beam. The dealer had to remove the tow bar to do this and now I have been told that the car cannot currently be fitted with one (Jeep cannot source one to fit once the cross-car beam has been fitted). As I bought the Jeep from new with a tow bar (to tow things) I was naturally a little upset that I now had a vehicle not fit for purpose.

  I need a small car that has enough oomph to tow my trailer but I am unsure how to work this out. The trailer is a Brenderup 1205 S. Total weight 750 kg Working load 610kg I was looking at a Clio 1.2 (weight 1080) but it has an unbraked towing weight of 535 kg.

  Travelling down the M6/M5 early on Monday morning this week, I was quite astonished to be overtaken by a Nissan or Mitsubishi pick-up towing a loaded trailer in lane 3. I was doing 70 and he came past relatively easily, at I would guess at least 80+. Amongst other things, it was dark, pouring with rain and there was a howling gale, but even better, he never made any attempt to use any other lane.

  I've now decided to let Audi fill it properly. My questions....... My gearbox has no fluid in it. Can I tow the car (slowly, in neutral, approx 1.5 miles)? Can I start the engine and have it ticking over, to allow the power steering to work? Thanks for your thoughts.

  Hi i have a 2.4 petrol maunal volvo 940 and have bought a caravan - 1100 kgs. It tows the 'van no probs, but i fancy a 3 litre auto Volvo 960 Estate / V90 - the 3 litre is about 150 kgs heavier too. Will be auto box be OK towing the 'van? Not too fussed about feul consumption ta Paul {Forest of Bowland}
