  • Auction Prices Bottom Out 23 Nov 2001 (News)
Last week I spotted a Y reg silver Honda Insight petrol-electric hybrid with what appeared to be a flat set of batteries. Today a 7,000 mile W reg actually made it past the block where it bit to a cautious £10,050. Bargains were few and far between. A new shape 92,000 mile 98S Astra 1.7TD Envoy estate started at a low £2,000 to reach a provisional £3,100.

Most smartphones support Google Maps, which includes a navigation function. To make the best use out of it you’ll need a 12V charger and a cradle, though - else the battery will get flat fairly quickly. There are also paid navigation apps that work like purpose-built sat-nav systems. If you go for one of these then a nifty gadget on offer from Garmin is the HUD.

We took the car to our Hyundai garage, but they could find nothing wrong, so I stopped at a supermarket on the way home where the car failed to start once again. So back to the Hyundai garage where they replaced the battery in the ‘smart key’. On the return journey back home, the engine died once again and I had to phone the breakdown services. So back to the Hyundai garage we go and this time asked for a loan replacement car, which they supplied.

As they get older it’s worthwhile undertaking as much preventative maintenance as possible, with an annual service inspection at roughly 12,000 miles advisable.

  • Still some cheap cars at Auction 30 Nov 2007 (News)
As a result, some cars, such as a 69k mile 03 Audi A4 S3 4.2 V8, continually circulate, giving their batteries a bashing, but at least being woken up several times a week to grace us with their presence. So you’re unlikely to nick a car like that because the vendor won’t be getting desperate in the run-up to Christmas.

The internal blower fan developed a habit of staying on randomly and getting stuck at a certain level, even after the ignition had been switched off. This led to me having to remove the fuse regularly to stop the battery running flat. When this was compounded by the glow plugs packing up and the car refusing to start, I gave up and invested in a Nissan Leaf instead. At least that always moves off without any fuss at all.

It's not the total amount of use the car gets; it's the length of the runs it does after starting from cold. The type of use you envisage could also flatten the battery. So if you go for a diesel, try to manage a run of at least 30 miles at least every fortnight.     Multi purpose question My wife and I have enjoyed driving Citroen Xsara Picasso MPVs for a number of years but as we have both retired recently are looking to buy something smaller but a similar height off the ground for access!
