Sheared tube but what is it? Astra 1.7TD 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Should I worry about driving with it in this state? It must be remembered here that I don't know when this happened and the car is running fine. The haynes manual mentions a tube to a vacuum switch, but doesn't say what this switch is for or where to find it - could that be this tube? My car often continues to run after I switch off the ignition. -

Citroen XM advice 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Please can I have any advice that anyone with experience of these beasts can throw at me. Running costs, tricks to longevity, problems experienced, joys of driving etc! I am looking to buy one relatively cheaply in the coming months. It is likely to be a Mk 1 and may even come from a family run franchise dealer I know (in that case with a brief warranty chucked in at this price). -
Pierburg carb probs 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
In other words it does not seem to idle when cold at any revs higher then 1000 rpm. Despite this, the car runs perfectly hot and cold!!(Very smooth now when cold)! Is this the way the car should have run all along. I mean, I know its summer and it is warmer, but before I changed the waxstat, when I first started the car it would rev at 2000 rpm, and then slow to 1000 rpm. -
Traffic Czar (Tsar?) 27 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Right turns banned. Traffic now finds alternate, less appropriate ways. Residents complain of rat running. Council considers speed bumps traffic calming what have you. Residents now moan about speed bumps. Lights replaced by roundabout at huge expense. Residents on original road now complain about huge increase of traffic that is no longer rat running. -
Maintenance 309 (short run) 20 May 2002 (Forum)
Involves a mix of short and slightly longer journeys, but the engine doesn't cool down much except near the end of the night when business is quiet and I go on few deliveries. BY THE WAY I leave the engine running whilst delivering, say 2 minutes per delivery. -Does this count as harsh use then? Should I change the oil at 3 or 4000 miles rather than 6000? ALSO (sorry to go on) - I go to university in september. -
Peugeot 308 - Cooling fan cuts in/out constantly 29 Dec 2024 (Forum)
As soon as I start the car up, the cooling fan will cut in for a few seconds, go off for a few seconds, and repeat this the entire time the engine is running, regardless of engine temperature. The fan cuts in and out the entire time the engine is running. Also, about 1 in 5 times I switch off the engine, the cooling fan will start up and won't stop. -
Kia Sportage 1.7 diesel. - More frequent DPF regens. 30 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Any ideas what's causing this? The engine runs fine but i did notice that in the 30 mile journey on the motorway the fuel consumption was about 5 mpg lower than normal. -
Peugeot 3008 - Honda Jazz - i40 - Sell or stick for motorway commuter! 1 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Current cars are both petrol: Car 1 - Peugeot 3008 - 49K miles, 20K a year - bought for £20K in 2021, valued at £14K Car 2 - Honda Jazz - 28K miles, 5K a year - bought for £9K in 2021, valued at £9K No point selling car 1 due to depreciation but thinking of selling Jazz for an i40 (diesel) with 60K miles for £11K and use Peugeot as run around to extend its life. Basically trying to think of a way to save money in long run but for the life of me can't come to a conclusion on to whether to stick with driving 3008 for work on motorway until it dies or sell wife's Jazz, give her the 3008 and buy an i40. -
Used family car - ULEZ car buying conundrum 28 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Budget is £15-20k, and needs to be a load carrier for family holidays and weekend jaunts, as well as for the weekly taxi runs to various kid clubs and shopping. We're ruling out diesels as I don't want to run into the same problem a few yrs down the line, and perfer to avoid SUVs. Market for hybrids to suit budget and needs is limited, so looking at petrol. -
Jaguar XK - Cranks but won't start after a stormy night 23 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Hi folks, I'd really appreciate your advice on the matter if you have a potential tip. This 2009 car was running smoothly with no issues. It was a very strong wind here last week, a storm. So at night I moved the car from the gates reversing slightly up the hill and parking sideways. Was a quick move, didn't let the engine run properly. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 16-12-2017 Part 1 16 Dec 2017 (Forum)
The reason is simple: cars with broken engines do not move, and cars that do not move pose no more of a hazard than buildings, lumps of rock, things that fall off lorries and land in the road, and a million other things that do not move. Ah, but you will say, it might have broken down where others could run into it. Yes, but the law and the insurance companies both say that would be their fault, not the fault of the car that is run into. What you have here is not an issue that justifies a safety recall but simply another case of poor engineering from VW. -
Peugeot 306 starting then cutting out 19 May 2017 (Forum)
Hi, just wondering if anyone can help, i have a Peugeot 306 dturbo and it has been off the road for a few weeks now woth a problem that we cant work out the cause of, the car will start and run for 6sec them cut out, there is power shutting off to the lift pump in the tank so we tried running a constant live but same problem occurred, i have tried blanking off single injectors one by one to see if one is loosing pressure but everything seems fine, a few times we have started the car it has ran for around 40sec to a min without stopping but then after it cuts out its back to just 6 sec Have had the car on a diagnostic machine and it says fuel pump primary circuit but we cant work out quite what that means, we have also tried new stop solenoid! -
Being asked for more money after a PX HPI check 17 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I completely understand their position, as they won't want to make a loss on the trade in, but shouldn't they have run the HPI check prior to agreeing? I'm looking through the terms and conditions, but can't see anything obvious to protect their position. -
Used car under 2k 3 Dec 2016 (Forum)
I was looking at the Ford Focus, golfs and some Mazda's but I have no idea how reliable or good to run are they as a make/model. Any makes/models I should avoid in this price range? -
Peugeot Partner Tepee - Partner Tepee Stop/Start not working 3 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Also, with no stop/start, i'm using the gear selector wheel to put the car into neutral at junctions, traffic lights, in jams etc as i don't want to leave it in gear with the engine running. Am i being overcautious or would leaving the car in gear with the engine running damage the clutch (or something else)? Any advice/assistance would be greatly appreciated. Tim. -
Skoda Octavia - Climate Control (Automatic Air Conditioning) 29 May 2015 (Forum)
The temperature at a dashboard vent was tested. Before service 6.5C and after 4.9C running flat out in the manual mode. I normally run in AUTO so I don't demand chilled air just the regulated 21C or so cab temperature which is fine for me. Unless the car mists up or deicing when the manual over ride is needed. -
Small Family Car for approx £4,500 max 25 May 2015 (Forum)
I really want a car which offers the following, in order of preference too... Reliability Low running costs/ servicing costs At least 300ltr boot 50+ mpg (pref 60 on longer runs at 56-60mph) Tax no more than £130 per year. Essentially something which will get me from point A to point B with minimum fuss, starts every time and so forth. -
Saab 9-3 1.9 TDI sport 2006 - Help 11 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I rang the garage back they explained this is ok and it should go out after the car had had a good run. I decided to try to give the car a good run-the turbo kicked in brilliant then stopped and the car became very sluggish. I turned the ignition off and started the engine up again and the car seems fine again. -
Ford C-Max - faulty engine response 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)
The car had a major service carried out within the last fortnight, and most of the time the engine runs fine, but knowing this fault can occur at any random moment is very alarming. If I take the car to a garage the chances are it will run perfectly. Can anyone provide a clue as to possible areas to investigate?
