  • Ford Focus - Validity of driveway diagnosis vs dealer? 12 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Thing is:   EOBD code readers are just reading fault codes from the ECU and transponding them into readable format, no?  So how come Ford's meters can read more deeply that the ones that mobile mechanics use, and if Ford's diagnostic tools really are more intensive than proprietary ones (this is a Sealey), then why on earth didn't they find the underlying fault in December?
  • Ford Focus - Rattling noise 28 Aug 2015 (Forum)
So far I have changed: Engine (the old one was using a lot of oil so I replaced it for a well maintained low mileage unit) CAT (had the original fitted so thought I would replace this) Up-stream (pre-cat) lambda sensor Spark plugs, leads and Coil pack (all genuine Ford) MAP sensor CHT sensor Knock sensor Fuel vaporizer ECU Fuel Filter Fuel pressure regulator PCV valve and breather pipes I have tried running the car on higher octane fuel and it made no difference.
  • Ford Focus MkII - Lambda + throttle connection ? 12 Jun 2015 (Forum)
HT leads replaced too, no avail. Doesn´t anyone have an experience with that or any clue, please? Could a problem be in ECU? Thank you very much and greetings from Czechia.
  • peugeot 306 hdi dt (99) - fuel problem, starting and running 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
To date i"ve tried changing the fuel filter, changed the lifter pump in the tank, cracked my injector pipes to see if there working, they are. checked the timing, all good,  plugged it into a computer, the reading came back that " the fuel pump relay was malfunctioning". I"ve changed this (located behing the ecu) and still no joy. I"ve also checked the wiring for brakes or wear and tear. Where i have found anything, I"ve securally taped and joined the wires. I"ve read on quite a few forums that this seems to be a reacuring problem with the hdi, but i cant find anyone who has actually been able to fix it.
  • Why does my car take so long to heat up? 26 Jan 2015 (Ask HJ)

  • 52 Plate Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X - Help! 2002 - 2005 Mondeo Engine Swap Problems 6 Jul 2014 (Forum)
All ancillaries including injector rail, camshaft pulley etc were pulled from the old block as they were all in perfect order and didnt wanna mess up the ECU etc.. Now the block is in all connected up.. no spare sensors hanging blah blah blah.. My problem is we cannot get a spark to the valves.. Ive checked the earthing connections, replaced the Vauxhall Meriva - Easytronic Gearbox "F" on dash HELP!! 6 Jul 2014 (Forum)
We bought the car for 2950 last year and will be paying off until next sept so as you can imagine this wasn't great news. Then I remembered that during my googling about the dreaded F I had seen something about ecu solutions that fix the existing actuator. Made my husband call back and the mechanic said that it could be an answer and would obviously be cheaper.     So the question I wanted to ask is how much is will cost for the mechanic to take the part out we will send it off and the mechanic will refit.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV 1.6 16V SE 2002 - Intermittent starting problems. "Fix" or sell? 10 May 2014 (Forum)
I have contacted my local vw garage who when pressed said that they could look at it (this would cost around £100+vat) and if at worst it was the ecu it would cost around £1000 to fix.  To be honest I would be happy to pay this if I was convinced it would  resolve it once and for all but there seems no guarantee of this and they do not seem too interested in helping.
  • Vauxhall Combo lacking power - should I remove the DPF? 4 Dec 2013 (Ask HJ)
My Vauxhall Combo van is suffering from a loss of power and black smoke. The engine light is also on and no garages can solve the problem. I have a suspicion...
  • Vectra Crank sensor error 9 May 2013 (Forum)
Started car again, no warning light and it drove fine for the next 5 motorway miles to work. Using the ever so technical paperclip I found that the ECU has stored a crank sensor error code (0335) however in my list of error codes acquired from http://www.topbuzz1.carenthusiasts.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm there is another error code called Camshaft sensor (0340) which I do NOT have.
  • VW Bora 1999 2.0 petrol - VW Bora Petrol Cuts out after 15-20 mins 14 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Coil pack failed last year ..and it sort of degrades slowly with misfiring etc so discounting it :) Heres what I know .. The Maf sensor can be disconnected and the ECU ignores it and goes to its default. So tried it and the engine still runs, when I get it to cut out ..doesnt matter whether it is still connected or not as will not start, so not going to default. The temp sensor (there is possibly 2) ..2 pin and 4 pin, both can be disconnected and the car still runs, again like the MAF once i got it to cut out it doesnt restart whether it is still connected or not.
  • Ford Focus - Starting Problems 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
They linked it up to the diagnostic computer to look as to why she was struggling to start, it came up with Crankshaft Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor faults. I also believe did a ECU upgrade to assist with starting issues, is this correct? Also the heater seems to take an awfully long time to get up to temperature, even though the temperature gauge on the engine is up to normal after about 10-15 mins of casual city driving.
  • VW T4 Caravelle - Faulty engine rebuild disaster - any comeback? 21 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Booked it into a local garage who took over a month to finally get it running ok. When I collected it the local garage said the timing was completely out and it had blown the ecu and cooked the glow plugs. The bill for their work came to £1200. Do you think I stand a chance of getting compensation from the rebuild garage by going back to them and stating they got the timing wrong which caused the starting issue?

  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Car will not start, Help please! 17 Mar 2012 (Forum)
It has run fine since then. I have changed the CPS and Cam Shaft sensor. I have drained the ECU also to try and reset this and remove any faults, with no affect. I have a spark at each plug, and appear to be getting fuel in the cylinder and if i relieve the fuel pressure at the injector rail it repressurises when next attempting to start.
  • Audi A6 Saloon - Oil Light 19 May 2011 (Forum)
V6 Engine runs smoothly, sounds as good as a diesel ever does, no oil leaks at all, oil level is always at max on the dip stick, oil changed using correct grade regularly and oil is acceptably clean on a spot test, steady oil temp on gauge when running, fuel economy is as good as ever, all fluid levels are OK and no sign or smell of anything abnormally hot, turbocharger can be heard spinning down sweetly when engine is turned off. How does the sensor transmit to the ECU is it an analogue voltage or digital signal, could something be interfering with it?
  • citroen xsara picasso - lost key 23 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Please can you help, i lost my car key a couple of weeks back and stupidly it was my only one, so on monday afternoon i managed to get it towed to the garage where i had a new key waiting, on arrival i was told it would take around 30 minutes to reprogramme, after about an hour an half i was sent away as it wouldnt work, and told they would try again tomorrow, the following evening i was called by the garage to be told they needed to order a coil to override the immobiliser or something along those lines at an extra 20 pound, on the wednesday they rang and told me the coil wouldnt work and theyd order a new key just in case the other was faulty which didnt work either, on the thursaday i spoek to them and they told me it was the wiring and my  car needed rewiring at a charge of 100 pound plus vat, which eventually i agreed to, so friday came and the garage rang me 1 minute before it shut and told me the rewiring hadnt worked and my computer needed a new ecu at a cost of 800 quid and the 160 pound for the work they had already completed which hadnt fixed my car so i dont agree i should have to pay this, theres no way i can afford 960 pound and the car is only worth 1500 roughly, please could you help me on where i stand i what action i should take next, when my car went to the garage it was worlking perfectly fine all that was wrong was id lost my key.
  • Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 2001 (y reg) - Buying Volkswagen advice 19 May 2010 (Forum)
been to see this car, it has had one lady owner from new. it's genuine miles, been serviced every year by the VW dealership. It's had new break callipers, new front coil springs in its last MOT. had new ecu 5 years ago because they were faulty on these models. everything that the MOT has showing up has been done. it's been well looked after, the car is in excellent condition. What should this car be valued at?
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 03 2.0hdi 90 go slow and surging 6 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I suppose the next step would be to find a decent fuel pressure regulator to check if that IS the problem. I've heard so many stories about dodgy ECUs, bad earthing etc that I'm not sure what to do. Any advice appreciated. I would really like to fix it myself and don't want to give up yet and take it to a mechanic. Cheers.....
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 03 2.0 glowplugs 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
We took a family trip out and discovered that the cigarette lighter didn't work (trying to charge our sat nav). On our return I went to change the fuse, and inadvertantly pulled out the ECU fuse. realising my mistake, I instantly replaced it. The cigarette lighter fuse was indeed blown, so I started up the car to go and get a replacement. I got about 500 yards down the road and the car started chugging (safe mode?)
