  • ford sierra abs 30 Jul 2004 (Forum)
This is a 1988 sierra ghia automatic which I have owned from new.It has been a fantastic car and has never let me down and passes the MOT 1st time every time. Recently the abs warning light came on so I had the sensors checked. One or two looked a bit grotty so I had all four replaced.
  • Baffling problem with Yamaha scooter 12 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I have a baffling fault with my scooter. It is a Yamaha majesty 125cc automatic transmission that was registered in 2002 with only 17,000 miles. The problem is that as I accelerate from stand still, I get a judder from the clutch. I have managed to have it temporarily cured whereby the clutch plates have been cleaned.
  • Import Myth... 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have just sold my wife's 1999V VW Golf 1.6SE automatic. Back in 1999, I approached a UK VW main dealer for the car. Their attitude was summarised by the statement of 'We do not do discounts. Sir.' They wanted a ridiculous £17,200 for the car. Next stop VW dealer in Belgium.
  • power loss - Merc C240 7 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Car - Merc C240, 91,000 miles. 1998 vintage, automatic 5-speed. Problem: Round town or city, the car is fine. But on the motorway or dual carriageway it\'s a different story. It will cruise along at 70 fine, no problems, but when I start to overtake it\'s not very energetic.
  • Odd problem 7 Nov 2002 (Forum)
A couple of days ago I noticed that the electric windows had stopped working. The window electrics are protected by an "automatic" fuse which cuts the current to the windows in the event of an overload (ie if the windows are frozen shut)and then resets itself after a few seconds. This fuse had become extremely hot, I removed it and left it to cool down.
  • Fiat Brava 1.2 SX Choke Problems 15 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I assume that this would have been immediately apparent, but did this realy happen and what was done to sort it out. Fianlly I am looking to buy a 1999 1.2 SX brava, Tried the car last night. From cold the automatic choke, whilst working, would vary the rpm of the engine, as it was warming up. It was not a smooth transition from high to low rmps. Once the choke was off the engine would tick over nicely, all be it what sounds like some tappet noise.

  • Xantia heater slow to warm up 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I'm having the thermostat checked out in a week or so, but meanwhile wondered if anyone else had a similar problem. Is it perhaps a common trait with this model? Whilst on the subject, the automatic climate system seems to act irrationally, e.g. if I increase the required temperature, the fan speed reduces (I would have expected it to increase) and if I set the temperature to max., the fan speed just about dies.
  • Audi 100 stalling 6 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Somedays he can travel 30 miles or so on the motorway at legal speed without any problems either with the engine or transmission. (it is not an automatic transmission model). On other days he may attempt the same journey and the engine will falter and lose power but at speeds of 60 to 70 mph it will not stall. The problem occurs however if the car is on a major road at slower speeds when the cars engine will hesitate and eventually stall.
  • Shopping for auntie dear. 3 Sep 2020 (Forum)
My wife’s aunt decided that due to health issues and a little knock of her confidence that she’d like to change the 16 plate Mini Countryman that I told her not to buy last year for a small automatic. Great thought I, I get to tour showrooms on someone else’s cash. But how wrong could that be. I made a wee shortlist of all the available small automatics that I’d recommend and expected an easy deal on a nearby 67 plate Jazz Auto at £9995 or a facelift 66 plate Peugeot 2008 Allure 1.2 Auto at £10,800.
  • Ford Focus Zetec 5 Dr 1.6 Tdci (2011 mark3) - Control panel lights and cAN bus issues 23 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Even after locking and the car, the radio will remain switched on and playing, and the information screen above the radio stays lit. On the occasions when the radio doesn't switch off automatically, and I switch it off before locking the car, the screen above the radio stays illuminated (showing the date and time) for some minutes before going off. Strangely, every time the front passenger door is opened, the radio will without fail automatically switch off as it should.
  • Please help me choose a car ! 25 Jan 2025 (Forum)
My requirements are;  Budget: £7000 Must be a torque converter type automatic.  Must be good over potholed roads.  Must get 45mpg at least according to RealMPG here.   Must not have a reputation for engines blowing up :-). Not a generic hatchback. Other criteria I'd like rather than must have include; Good for motorway use, nice interior, nice to look at, not French or Ford.
  • Renault Clio - Advice rejecting 23 plate Clio alpine esprit 15 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Can I reject the car or does it have to be rejected within 30 days. 7 days of this was the master technician trying to work out what was wrong with the car. I’m led to believe changing a clutch on an automatic hybrid is not an easy task as well. The car no longer feels new to us. A new car is also 4 month back order. Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Again trying to find one that isn't wheelchair accessible near to Gloucester is difficult. They're all automatic which I hope is torque converter and not very economical. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304286773216 Vauxhall Zafira Tourer. Loads around but how reliable are they? Fiat Doblo 94hp not the 77hp version as the low power one is glacially slow.

  • NIO battery swap 22 Jan 2022 (Forum)
Did anyone watch Fifth Gear Recharge.   I showed a NIO battery station swop the EV battery automatically in 5 minutes.  The station is in Norway which by all accounts is streets ahead of the UK converting to EV by 2025.  China has these stations all over the country. I do not know how the NIO system works or whether you buy the car with a battery or merely rent the batteries probably the latter?

  • Honda CR-V Hybrid - Disconcerting drive 2 Sep 2020 (Forum)
It's my first experience (in more than 50 yr driving) of a hybrid - or for that matter an automatic - and I think there may be rather a learning curve! Firstly the silence - having had a series of turbo-diesel  Saabs then Versos over the past 25 years, I found it disconcerting not to be able to hear whether the engine is running.
  • Rover 45 2004 CVT 1.8 - Rover CVT common problems/longevity 24 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Hello,    My granny is giving up driving and my sister wants an automatic as a first car. This fits the bill for her perfectly, however, being a rover cvt we all have our doubts about the car.    My grandmother has owned it since new and has done 38,000 miles, in it.
  • Hyundai Tucson - Diesel Particulate Filter in Hyundai Tucson 22 Jun 2018 (Forum)
However I just assumed the miles I do (short infrequent trips with occasional motorway journeys, with a total of 4-5k miles per year) would limit my choice to the petrol engine. However speaking to someone today who has a diesel tucson (his is automatic) and they do similar mileage to me with no issues or concerns regarding the DPF. They seem to think the Tucson DPF is designed in such a way that it doesn't require regular regeneration or cleaning and low mileage should be less of an issue.
