  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 127 16 May 2007 (Forum)
However when I go to shutdown and press 'Switch Off' I am told that it is now safe to switch off manually which I have to do; where as previously the switch off would be automatic. Have had a look under Power management etc but cant find anything. Also have noticed that some of the graphics eg 'Find' are different - Cant remember that pooch being there before????. Is this all to do with SP2?
  • Escort Encore 1.6 braking problem 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I really hope that someone is able to help. I purchased a 1997 Ford Escort Encore 1.6 Automatic from a dealer on Wednesday and so far I have nearly crashed twice! It is fitted with continuously variable transmission (CTX) which itself takes some getting used to if you are not used to it but on 2 occasions now I have gone to brake only to find the car accelerating which isn't a very nice feeling.
  • Octavia 140 DSG v vRS 170 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I am looking at an Octavia estate as replacement for my company Mercedes E270CDi Elegance automatic which has been superb but which carries a large tax liability. I am seeking good performance, some comfort and space and decent handling in a very tax efficient package. I have discounted A4/ C Class/ 3 series etc on grounds of cost.
  • Y2000VW 1.6SE Golf Mk IV NVH at 2,750rpm 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
For instance, I notice a slight jerk of the gearshift between power on/power off when in gear, which might not be normal (or perhaps I've been driving quiet automatics for too long). Is this "character" or something else? Thanks.
  • Small horse van required 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
What we require is, ideally, a converted van with space to carry 2x 16.2hh horses plus tack. As this is a wish list, the vehicle should be automatic; have a walk through to the rear from the cab; it should be not much wider than a standard van (due to the track-way it will be parked in); and be no higher to get in to than a Transit / Movano (my back problems are getting worse!).
  • New towcar - Hyundai or Kia 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Time to ditch the Jeep as it's getting a bit expensive on repairs (not to mention diesel). I need an automatic diesel towcar that'll drag 1500 Kg of caravan across France and across rally fields. As our income is now fixed it'll have to last a goodly time. I know the Kia Sorento was last year's towcar of the year and is still a class winner but I'm attracted to the Santa Fe, it's £1k cheaper and the 5 year warranty is good news.

  • VW Polo '98 electric window fault 3 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I tested/replaced the fuse but this seems to be ok. According to the manual the windows operate on an automatic fuse (a separate fuse i suppose?) which breaks under stress, e.g if windows frozen shut, and reconnects seconds later. I wonder whether the 'blocks' clamping the window as referred to in a previous thread for a VW Passat have broken/cracked generating stress and causing the fuse to break??

  • New Supermini for my Mother 4 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The car will have to be strongly built and mechanically reliable (she has kept her last car seven years and so will not change it for quite a while). She refuses to drive an automatic (there is not much point in discussing it - I have tried.......). I think the following may be worth a punt:- Kia Rio Hyundai Getz (I believe this is the Suzucki Swift But which one and which trim.

  • Obstructing 'blues 'n twos' 28 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Would this have been deemed 'obstructing the police' or some other such charge? I seem to recall Roadcraft stating that the use of lights and/or sirens conveys no automatic right of way to emergency vehicles - maybe things have changed since then?
  • Hyundai diesel engine query 1 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I posted this query over in Technical, but suspect that it may get a better response over here. (if the mods allow?) Our Trajet is the diesel automatic. When starting from cold, espcially in cold weather, the car pumps out a lots of white smoke, which eventually disappears as the car warms up. Is this simply condensation? It is also quite sluggish for the first 1/2 mile or so.
  • Yet another insurance query 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Yes, I have a duty to minimise losses but isn't this a bit coercive? Would accepting my own insurer's offer automatically place me in breach of that duty? This is all new to me. Which should I go with? I'm sure I won't get an impartial view from either my, or the other's, insurers.
  • Vauxhall Omega Snow Button -does it work 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Hi my name is Matt and I have a 1994 Vauxhall Omega 2.0 16v Automatic Saloon Green Car. It has a very high mileage (121,000) but is still going like a tank. My friends call it 'The Beast'. I like to call it 'The Tank'. It has a snow button, which I personally have never used.
  • Astra 1.6 estate - Cambelt? WOMAN WARNIN 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hey there, I bought a second hand Astra 1.6 estate Vreg last October - its an Automatic and I love the car. Yet this morning there was a noise from under the bonnett, like a whirling noise when I accelerated off. Although it did sound different when stationery too. I peaked under the bonnet having absolutely NO CLUE what i was looking at and at a guess the noise seemed to be coming from this belt that was going round.
  • New Car Peugeot 206SW 22 May 2005 (Forum)
Also something which is not too much longer than my present Rover 200, about 4000mm, give or take 300mm, so it will fit in my garage. It needs to be automatic transmission. I have found two which seem to fit the bill, the Ford Fusion and the Peugeot 206SW. Of these the 206 is more comfortable and suitable. However, I have heard reports that the 206 can cut out while driving.
  • Astra 1.4i auto L reg water problem! 13 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi Guys I have a Astra 1.4i Automatic 1994 L reg which is seems to be drinking water. When I got the car about three weeks ago I noticed a small leak from the top raditor hose which I sorted out with a new clip. I have looked at every hose and have not found any trace of water or water marks.
  • Making an accident worse 16 Dec 2004 (Forum)
My friend managed to reverse her car into the front of her house. Yes she put it in reverse instead of first! No, it wasn't an automatic!! However, the (even) crazier thing is when she did this, she went to get out the car and the door swung back on her. She kicked it so hard that, that it broke the hinge straps and bent the edge of the door!
  • Biggest car design bloopers. Volume 1 4 Dec 2004 (Forum)
It has a facility whereby, if it's not locked, if someone touches a door handle the elecric windows lower a few cm. automatically. This is to prevent pressure build up inside the car when shutting the doors. Someone took one of these cars to a car wash. As soon as the bristles of the spinning brushes touched the door handles....... you can guess the rest!
