BMW 5-Series E34 (1987 - 1996) - 1989 3.5 Does My Car Have A Cold Start Valve 12 Feb 2009 (Forum)
the ignition system is in a1 condition and i have a good strong spark and the plugs are quite new. all hoses and pipework for the inlet system are brand new so no air leaks. im now believing the car is overfueling which is causing the flooding. after reading lots of info on the net cold start valves and thermo time switches keep getting mentioned on the m30 engine but i don't know if my year has one, i only have two connectors on the thermostat house but i gather there should be a third if i have a thermo time switch. another possibility is the fuel pressure regulator could be knackered leading to overfueling, ill have to check this tomorrow. at the minute i just need to get it to start and rev properly so it will idle then i can start to look for the issue, so i was hopin to find and just disconnect the thermo time switch which would disable the cold start valve. -
Citroen C3 (2002 - 2009) - Thinking of selling my C3 18 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Unidentifiable electrical problems meaning the car has gone into limp home mode about 6 times, all of which have lead to them not knowing what has caused it because the code it comes up with is not recognised. Power steering going all of a sudden, then coming back with no logical reason. Then one by one things going wrong - I've had to call RAC out 4 times in just over a year. -
BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 1999 5.0 V8 M5 - Throttle Problems 8 Jul 2008 (Forum)
They say there is nothing showing on the diagnostic machine or in the history? They have changed Both air flow sensors All the spark modules (spark leads) All spark plugs Some form of ´rev´sensor (situated near clutch housing) Currently the total cost stands at about £2500... The fault still occurs and now they want to replace sensors on the clutch assembly, the clutch whilst it? -
Which car to buy? 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Ford Mondeo TDCi Ghia X 53 reg onwards - love the spec on these following the facelift and I think they're pretty comfortable, tyres should wear slower than the MG, parts will never be a problem but I've heard tales of MAF, EGR and injector problems. Jag X Type 2.0d Sport - As per the Mondeo really, also concerned at possible discontinuation leading to plummeting resale values. Volvo S60 D5 Sport - I really like these to sit in, but only like the looks of ones following the 2004 facelift. Heard of no major problems apart from heavy tyre wear and some injector problems. -
NIP - who was driving? 11 May 2007 (Forum)
If my wife does as the NIP suggests and contacts the Camera Processing Unit so they can check if the photographic evidence can be of assistance in identifying the driver, will this automatically lead to the Conditional Offer being voided and therefore a court hearing as the leaflet "Speed and Red Light Detection ............" seems to indicate? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated ?? -
Cyclists - psychopaths? 12 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I doubt they could have stopped in time had I not moved. What about walkers with little dogs not on leads? Or little children? All had helmets and lycra so must have been serious about the 'sport'. Over the past few years I've twice been scared witless by a cyclist going at full tilt on the pavement and passing me from behind so I was unaware of their presence until I felt the whoosh of the air past me. -
Help Please. Major Pug 206 Problems 22 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday, with the extreme cold weather, it failed to start despite me trying to using/pumping the fuel primer. I called the AA out who attached plug leads to the battery which did not seem to help, but after several minutes eventually did tick over. So I took the car to the dealer who said they would try to look at the car asap. The looked at it that afternoon, and stated that the car was staring fine. -
Engine failure just prior to trading in. 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The dealership and Saab UK insist that it's water ingestion and the only other thing I could think of was cambelt failure leading to a cracked head and coolant being sucked in and then out the airintake, thus making it wet - but the cambelt is intact. They suggest I claim on my insurance (but seeing as I didn't hit water, I can't honestly do that!). -
Cars easier to service, DIY declining 16 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The following ( manual brake adjustment/tappets/head removal/decokes/lapping in valves//greasing/contactbreakers/frequent spark plug replacement/HT leads/distributercap/dealing with structural rust), are no longer part of the regular DIY of contemporary cars Some current car *engines* are only oil and filter changes (Servicing for the actual engine at routine services) . -

Peugeot 406 TD knocking sound 15 Sep 2006 (Forum)
It is really hard to pin point exactly, I have had my father holding the shock absorber while I start up and when it does make the knocking sound he couldn?t really feel any vibration in the shock itself, which leads me to think it's more an engine mount or even something else. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with a knocking sound and if they could recommend anywhere else to look or check around the engine? -
Modern Signs Are Rubbish! 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Copyright: Ady Kerry An abundance of signs can be confusing, the foundation says Drivers are in danger of having accidents because they are being overloaded with journey information, the RAC Foundation has warned. A clutter of contradictory signs cause confusion that can lead to crashes, executive director Edmund King will tell a London transport conference. The popularity of in-car devices adds to this "overload", he will say. The foundation is calling for a review of signing and urging drivers to plan journeys in advance. -
EC Proposes to end Car Registration Tax 8 Jul 2005 (Forum)
See below. "The EU executive Commission is proposing a restructure of EU car tax systems which would lead to the eventual abolition of car registration tax in the European Union. The main aim of the Commission proposal for a directive is to remove existing tax obstacles to the transfer of passenger cars from one Member State to another. -
Half dead cat? 1993 vw polo 8 Jun 2005 (Forum)
This is not an impossibility, since i had a lot of trouble with a failing distributor and poor HT leads. The question is (finally), what to do? For the past few years, emissions have been borderline on CO, but Lambda and Hydrocarbons are still well within the tolerances. Do I change it now or could it be something else entirely? -
Thoughts on replacing Polo 22 Mar 2005 (Forum)
. :( New job's going well, living back with the parents after nearly 4 years away is "interesting", and the first pay cheque has arrived, which of course leads to thought on where to spend it! Polo was only ever intended to get me through uni and he's looking a bit old now, so he's probably going some time in the next six months. I'm also 25 in September which (I hope!) -
Legal problem - can anyone help? 11 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Clearly this is not a clear cut case and my relative was prepeared to take the insurance hit for fixing her car and for third party costs since it might not be easy to prove that the turn signal was flashing in the second leading up to the accident. However, the local constabulary have just written to her saying that they intend to prosecute her for careless driving but if she wants to to spend 145 pounds she can take a retraining programme with the county council and then they won\'t prosecute. -
Collating BR FAQ on TDi chip upgrades 11 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me could give some guidance in terms of how likely/unlikely it is that chipping may lead to problems with any of the above. Any corrections or additions to the list are welcome - the idea is to share knowledge and experience. Also, it seems that there are a number of people who have gone ahead and chipped their turbodiesel with excellent results. -
Pug 405 Oil Leak from engine mount 22 Aug 2003 (Forum)
. :-) Strange one this - when the recent spell of warm-ish weather started (approx mid-late June), a small oil leak began to make itself apparent from the timing end of the engine. Initially it was just an occasional drip from the lowest corner of the sump, leading me to think either the sump oil seal (Instant Gasket or equivalent), or the rubber rocker cover gasket had let go. Closer inspection suggested the latter. The leak got worse, so I consequently replaced the rocker cover gasket, and found only a minor leak from each rear corner of it. -
Letter from Lagos 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I was standing pitchside with camera, and he made a point of walking up and saying hello, and having a chat. (I was the only white bloke in the stadium!) The game was pretty good, with Enyimba leading 3-0, due to a succession of goalkeeping errors, when disaster struck? the opposition took of their keeper, and the substitute?s first move was to bring down an opposition striker. PENALTY! But the opposition walked off at that stage, knowing that they would thus be losers by a ? -
Minor road works - major conjestion 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
People wising to leave at J3, keep in lane 3 ?till the last minute; having passed the stationary queue in lanes 1 and 2 This leads to all three lanes being blocked or at best moving very slowly. Drivers approaching J3 brake, drivers behind over-compensate and a shock wave of stationary traffic is sent back down the M55 towards the 4 lane M6 {the country's major motorway in terms of vehicles per day - more use the M6 in Lancashire than any part of the M25 {London orbital}.
