Help Please. Major Pug 206 Problems - clachnacudden
Pug 206 - 120K motorway miles, not thrashed OY51 REG.

New developments with the issue stated below:

Update: The car starts after about ten seconds, with a big puff of smoke out the back. Key point, the car only has problems starting when left overnight, but starts perfectly well the rest of the day. Yesterday, with the extreme cold weather, it failed to start despite me trying to using/pumping the fuel primer. I called the AA out who attached plug leads to the battery which did not seem to help, but after several minutes eventually did tick over. So I took the car to the dealer who said they would try to look at the car asap. The looked at it that afternoon, and stated that the car was staring fine. I told them it only has problems starting in the morning. They kept it overnight and reported back to me that the problem was not the glow plugs which they said were 100% but that there was communication problems with the computer in the car. They stated that the it was either faulty wiring or that I need a new computer!!!! expensive.

This does not seem right, I asked this question before and got these reponses, it seems they have not considered (bar one option) these potential solutions.

What are your thoughts, are they riping me off again?

Earlier question:-

How do,

Not been on for a while which is always good news, but i have a quick (but familiar) question for the diesel heads out there.

Winter is coming, which means starting problems for my Pug 2001 206. You may have already guessed that my car starts up no problem in the summer.

I just about managed through last winter without major starting problems (avarage two turns of the key), but got the glow plugs replaced in January by a Pug Dealer.

Anyway, is there an obvious solution to this problem, that would ease my winter worries (New battery perhaps), or should I expect the nightmare starts again. My fear being that the Pug will fair to start this year!!!

Car has over 100K mostly motorway miles on the clock.

A worried pug dealer, is there any other Kind?

Thanks,

Craig

Presuming the engine is the older, non-tubocharged 1.9D (XUD engine), there are only a few possible causes of poor starting and no particular reason why you should expect problems. To summarise the usual suspects:

Glow plugs - already eliminated

Glow plug relay - you'd know about it even in the summer if this went

Compression - Air in the fuel line - Battery -

Sorry the earlier reponses by viewers were

Glow plugs - already eliminated because they were changed in JAN O6

Glow plug relay , Compression, Air in the fuel line, Battery.

Hope this helps,

don't assume because glow plugs replaced recently that they work! test them! air in fuel overnite caused by tiny air leak in engine bay normally around pump or filter .
Glow plug relay! Compression! worth checking valve clearences, may have closed up due to motorway work.
Test glow plug system 1st
If car starts instantly with a swift tug then suspect valve clearances
if it is reluctant with a tow & blue smoke & rough for 30sec's or so suspect air leak
Hope this helps

You may have a sticking glow plug relay box. Our 106 diesel has this: the glow plug warning light sometimes does not come on and the car will not start.. or when it does, piles of smoke (from overfueling).
Solutiion: switch off ignition key if light does not come on,. switch on key again.. light come son, car starts.

It's an intermittent problem so a PIA to diagnose....

Could replace it with anew/scrapyard one but since the solution is so easy, I see no reason to....

I notice that no-one has put down, as a possible solution yet, the computer or wiring - am I right to suspect therefore that the pug dealers are having a laugh at my expense once again?

I would be very reluctant to accept that the computer had 'gone wrong'
On petrol engined cars, the driver circuits to the coil(s) may fail - but apart from that, the computers don't go wrong - apart from a total failure.
Much more likely is that you have contact/wiring or sensor troubles.
Sometimes replacing the computer resolves contact problems in that immediate area.

This is generally not a good job for a dealer - unless they have a specialist on board.
It does need someone who can troubleshoot, beyond plugging in the diagnostic computer and running a basic check.
I would look for an electrical/diesel specialist.

Well I don't know much about Pug 206s, or diesels for that matter, but I do recall seeing the same symptoms on Vauxhall 2.2DTi engined cars on various forums, the problem has usually been dodgy injector seals. Could that be the case here?
