  • 118MPH Police Chief banned - 90days + £500 16 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Paul Gee, 48, who recently retired from Durham Constabulary, had claimed he was carrying out a "risk assessment" for his force's driving school at the time. Falkirk Sheriff Court heard he was in uniform and driving a marked car when caught by a mobile camera. Gee was banned from driving for three months and fined £500. The former inspector, from Heddon On The Wall, Northumberland, had originally pleaded not guilty to the speeding offence, committed on 3 November 2006.
  • "Killer Road": any views? 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
However, that aside, and regardless of people's opinions on other sites (most notably that the A46 is a clear road that suffers from dullards driving too slowly) all I can say is that itf it stops even one person doing something foolish, then it will have saved someone the grief so harrowingly portrayed. And I don't think anyone put it on for the cameras. As the mother of a 13yr old killed by a drunk driver said "I know people that drink and drive and I know what I want to say to them but you just don't do you".
  • Combined phone/sat nav/PDA 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
could one buy a Phone/PDA combo and insert this SAT/NAC card to achieve the same aim. I would like someting that could be used in the car, as a standard SAT NAV, with speed-camera warning too if Poss ! ! but also something that would be used with Ordnance Survey software, so when I go out on my bicycle in the country with the cycling club I could track my route onto the OS maps and then store/download my route for later use - also useful I'm told if you are on some bridleway and there are a plethora of apths that aren't marked on the map - you can tell where you really are !!!
  • To the Polo on the East Lancs tonight... 18 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I was following a Polo before which kept easing off and slowing down and then speeding up again so I kept an even greater distance. We got to the junction with the East Lancs road (traffic light camera enforced) and began to turn right when he decided to slam the brakes on mid junction thus forcing me to do so too. I was in disbelief thinking he was looking for another turn off or were lost so I gave a quick tap on the horn.
  • What is it with motorcyclists? 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
    - Young lads/lasses with restricted speed scooters travelling at the restricted speed, 27 MPH, smack in the middle of the lane and will not pull over to allow ordinary powered vehicles to pass. - Rush up to speed cameras at the speed limit + 15 mph, then slam on their brakes to the speed limit - 10 mph almost causing the following vehicles to plough into the back of them. It seems to me that the death and injury figures of motorcyclists would be much higher if the ordinary motorists did not have to compensate for their boorish and thoughtless driving.
  • Banning of HGV drivers 16 May 2005 (Forum)
The reason for this is that they are breaking the 40mph speed limit on the A41 and A53, both these roads give access to the M54-M6, and are both single carrigeway roads with a 40mph limit for HGV. There speed violations have not been caught by the police or cameras, but by checking of tacho discs. There has been a big crack down by the ministry in this area and more than 200 drivers have been caught by this underhand method. If this system was abopted for car drivers then every single driver in the UK would get a fine.I thought to be given a speeding fine they needed to prove speed, time, (which they can with a tacho) and location.
  • Speeding notification 26 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Particularly nasty as I was technically still in a 30mph zone - the 60mph de-restriction sign is about 25 feet behind the camera. Anyway, I reckon I was doing about 36-38mph. I\'m aware the Notice of impending Prosecution has a 14 day period to be issued by the police. My 14th day is this coming Bank Holiday Monday. If the NiP should arrive later in the week, and I am therefore outside the 14 day period, what should I do?
  • This Nanny State 29 Jun 2004 (Forum)
On his way home he has to swerve, clips the kerb and barrel rolls through the garden fence and wipes out a child. The child was positioned between the camera and the fence as the car came through. The impact on the class was phenominal I have never seen such a reaction from a group that has seen it all. Apparantly it has not been allowed to be shown on English TV.
  • Mystery official vehicle on A1 24 Jun 2004 (Forum)
It looks like a frame with about 25 large yellow inverted teacups arranged 5x5. Whenever I see it this vehicle has its doors shut so does not look like a camera van. I did wonder if it was connected to RAF Leeming since whenever I see it it is close-ish to the airfield but it is not in military colours. Last night I saw it at about 7.30pm but have also seen it at 7am.
  • Smart Street Lamps 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Cars need to be identified electronically; their speed checked all the time (not just when going past cameras!) and even more critically, data needs to flow back to the drivers, ensuring they know what is going on ahead of them. In the car, monitoring equipment keeps tabs on the state of the engine. If there's an accident, accelerometers can alert the network to the crash, before it turns into a multiple vehicle pile-up.
  • Not speed or phone but dangerous... 8 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Woman driver having animated conversation with woman passenger, turning head and looking at passenger for long periods. Could not overtake due to oncoming traffic and something told me to hang back. Past speed camera (on open stretch of road) then up hill and round bend. Right turn to Blisworth just past bend. One car sitting waiting to turn right. Woman in Rover 30 mph straight in to back. Surprisingly large amount of damage but fortunately no one (visably) injured.
  • Induction Loops (M6 and Stoke) 30 May 2003 (Forum)
In the thread about GPS speed limiting it mentions the use of induction loops to control speed. For what other purposes are they used (other than traffic lights and cameras)?
  • Imaginative plea in mitigation required... 25 Apr 2002 (Forum)
A few days ago, someone (anonymity preserved) posted the following in one of the speed camera threads - 'My last motoring offence was described as 'using an unauthorised class of vehicle on a motorway'. Due to a combination of circumstances, none of them my fault, I was nabbed for riding a push bike on a motorway.
  • Traffic Signs 12 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I was caught by a revenue camera a fews years ago - speeding in a 30mph limit. The road was a dual carriageway. I complained to the polics (Sussex of course) that there were no speed limit repeater signs. The road had started out as a single carriageway and changed into a dual carriageway, with no speed limit reminders.
  • Oops is the word needed. 20 Sep 2001 (Forum)
As i work in an aircraft apprentice school with lots of young drivers, male and female, i posted up a list of speed camera locations in our local area. I hope it will slow them down a little. Some hope ! One lad was reading the lists and mentioned that he'd just been given 3 points. I asked why. " I got stopped on the M4 " he said.
