  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.4 cylinder liner disturbed 2 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Consequently, i turned over the engine (spanner on end of crank) with the head off and one of the liners popped up slightly, resulting in coolant disappearing down the sump i think. I was very careful when turning the engine over again to make sure that i held the liners down. I have put everything back together, drained the oil. refillied with oil.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8TDCi - Fails to start 27 Apr 2009 (Forum)
When depressing the clutch prior to junctions the revs would drop to 500 then back up to 900 every 1 second and would get plumes of white/light grey smoke on start up. Used the built in diagnostic and only error code found was for coolant temp low. Have tested the glow plugs and all read arround 1-2 Ohm's, Inspected fuel lines as far as possible and appear in good order. Have always had it serviced at correct intervals and now sits on 112K miles, anybody had a similar problem as any advice would be massivly appreciated as am terrified of taking it to a main dealer as things are a bit tight at the mo.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.7td Anyone used cylinder head/block sealant?. 11 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I've got a 1994 Astra 1.7DTL, and for the last year or so it's been misfiring after a cold start, and white smoke from the exhaust for just a few seconds, after which it's fine for the rest of the day. Also more recently I've noticed a slight loss of coolant, about 1 pint every two weeks. Last night I decided to release the pressure on the cooling system after returning home in the car, and this morning my suspicions were confirmed. There was no misfire and no smoke.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 00 2.8 Suspect blown head gasket 6 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The RAC guy said he suspects the head gasket has blown, he came to this conclusion because the radiator/coolant tank had split/cracked, he then towed me home. Is there anyway a mechanic will be able to diagnose this as the definite cause before taking my engine to pieces? Prior to this I have had no probems, no loss of power or anything, I did however add some antifreeze to the radiator yesterday and was wondering if the tank could have cracked if I added to much, I remember doing this to an old golf of mine years ago but on that occasion it simply blew a valve.
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 1998 1.2 Intermittent Starting 27 Nov 2008 (Forum)
After three or four attempts the engine usually fires up. Ive read some posts on this website which recommend replacing the CTS (coolant temp sensor, however this was on a car with the older dizzy type ignition system) and flywheel sensor (Which was off a car wit a 16v engine). As the engine in my car is only 8 valve with a distribuitor-less ignition system i dont know if these parts would cause the same faults.
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 2002 2.0 Diesel misfire 21 Oct 2008 (Forum)
This fault also cleared itself. The misfire is now back. Various warnings on the dash. I've had top up engine coolant level. Presuming this is a faulty sensor as the level is fine. Local auto electrician hooked the car up. Cleared all faults and said lets run it for a wk or so. See what shows. The misfire continued and he was baffled so the car went to a diesel specialists.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 98 1.4 MOT Failed emission tests 12 Oct 2008 (Forum)
The smoke isn't black and I wouldn't say its blue, so from I've read on the internet I don't think oil or coolant is burning. Will replacing the Lambda Sensor fix this? Any help greatly appreciated, thanks guys! • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.8 TDdi Mysterious pool of liquid under car... 11 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, Noticed a mysterious pool of liquid under my wife's 2001/Y 1.8 Tddi Endura Focus Ghia. It's not oily, have checked the levels and they all seem fine, coolant doesn't seem to be depleting. No warning lights on the dash either. My only guess would be air-con condensation being emitted, but how long is this likely to last? I noticed it on Saturday and it's still slowly dripping.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9TDi - car gone nuts with white smoke 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I've been playing and now the cars gone nuts. Initally I was geting a small amount of white smoke (diesel smelling, not oil / or coolant) when starting from cold. Yesterday i was playing with the vacuum hose system (replacing them to try and fix an underboost problem) Now the car is consantly putting out the white smoke especially when accelerating.

  • Rover 45 (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.8i XL - Is this a 'K' Series engine 12 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I read in Honest John car by car page about the Rover 45 'K' Series engine's (copied)...What to Watch Out For 'K' Series engine inlet manifold 'O' rings tend to perish between 25 - 30,000 miles. Head gasket failure common on K series four cylinder engines because very low coolant capacity of engine means small leaks rapidly lead to overheating. Weakest point is water heated inlet manifold gasket. 1.8 K Series head gasket failures. How do I know if this car I'm going to look at is a 'K' Series engine?
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2002 1.6 running temperature 24 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The heater does produce warm air after about 3 miles and seems fine even though the gauge isn't near 80. It could be a dodgy temp sender unit or the coolant ecu unit. To change the stat on these you are advised to remove cambelt, camshaft sprocket and timing belt covers to get to the stat housing, I'm tempted to try it in situ - has anyone done this?
  • Rover 420 SDI 2 litre turbo diesel fault 31 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Interestingly, if the engine is turned off for a short period (say 5 mins) after even just a mile or two from cold, it runs perfectly when re-started. The coolant temperature sensor, fuel filter and the glow plugs have been renewed. I only use Shell diesel fuel, never supermarket products. Any ideas? Thank you,
  • 1998 Fiat Ducato running hot 8 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The rad is missing quite a few sections of fins and the water level wont stay at maximum though it never drops below minimum. With the heater on, theres a smell of hot coolant in the cab. Given that any water loss isn't ongoing (only goes down to minimum) what could be causing the running hot? Any ideas? Filling up water to the max doesnt make any difference to running temp - it still seems to run hot.

  • Weird A4 problems today... any ideas? 27 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Coolant alarm suddenly went off on my 98 Audi A4 tdi (180k) today, so topped it up immediately - no obvious leaks etc, so I just put it down to not checking it often enough. 60 or so miles later, it went off again, so I checked under the car to find water dripping out pretty fast - although it was impossible to see where from due to the guard that covers most of the underside.

  • Servicing my car 15 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I can't help thinking I'm just paying for nothing really and i'd be better off just changing the oil every 5k miles - coolant etc is the Ford 'long life' stuff that apparently never needs changing, it had new plugs at the last service, etc etc. Hopefully, when I finish with my car, it will be at least 7-8 years old, and obviously will still be high mileage so will the FFSH even make any difference at resale time?
  • Heater matrix pressure valve recall VW G 29 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Hi all I've got a lot of condensation in the cabin of my VW Golf Mk2 GTI, there's a funny smell when the heater is turned on, and the coolant level is dropping. It doesn't take a genius to work out that there's something amiss with the heater matrix or associated plumbing. However, I have heard that the mk2s were subject to recall for a presure valve to be fitted to address a weakness with the matrix.
