Audi - Affordable Car to Maintain 13 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Hi all. Just looking for a little advice. I have nearly always owned a Ford. My first car was a Volvo S40, but since then every car I have had has been a Ford. From Petrol V6s to my current TDCi Diesel. I work 30 miles away, so rack up about 400+ miles per week - hence the diesel. However my current car just doesn't please me. -
BMW 535i - SORN,MOTs and all that gubbins 18 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I will be using a MkIV Golf (10 yr old) in the meantime as it's a bit cheaper to run about it on a daily basis and my wife's just got a 7 year old Volvo V40 (tells me the Golf was too small but it will do me!!) Question is: shall I renew the MOT on the BMW? (due in 1 month) Or should I do a SORN (statutory off-road notification)? I don't want the expense of insurance for the BMW but I wonder if I am storing up trouble for whenever I take her back out on the road in a couple of years? -
Small, cheap 2nd car recommendations 23 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I'm after a small second car, for use on small school run, pootling, and occasional works trips when the family volvo in use by him indoors. Budget - less than 2k. I want really cheap to run, good reliability, no rust. My favorite car of all time was my F reg Polo - TBH I'm used to crappy cars and the v50 drives me mad with stupid computers warnings all the time, and its a garage job to change a headlight bulb, so I want back to basics, no frills, sod all to go wrong. -
Local paper campaign - using mobiles 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The worst offenders here are what I call the Hutton Mutton, vacuous bottle blondes yak yak yakking away at the wheel of their Range Rover Vogue 4.2 HSE, Porsche, Volvo, BMW 4x4 or white van man ("Alright geez'? aaas it going mate? sweet, yeah, see ya") This is obviously one of those motoring laws that is totally ignored by a hard core of people, a bit like serial drink drivers who believe they are safer after a couple of pints. -
Car Insurance Due - which insurer to choose.....? 7 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hello there, My car insurance is due on the 28th November and I've received my renewal quote today from my current insurer (Post Office) for £523.36 (ouch!) Car is a 2001 Volvo S60 2.0TS, comprehensive cover, 8-years protected no-claims, £500 excess, 9000 miles a year, no previous claims. I've got quotes from the compare sites and swiftcover comes out at £351.24, ibuyeco comes out at £361.99 and through confused.com, the Post Office comes out at £384.41. -
Automatics - I'm a convert 21 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have always said that I wouldn't have an auto gearbox at any price and that I really enjoyed driving a manual. I did have a couple of autos back in the late 70s, a Jag XJ6 and a Volvo 164, but I never really got on that well with them. So what has changed my mind? Well we were in the US in June and hired a Toyota Highlander and drove around New England and I really loved the relaxed driving of the auto, so much so I will be looking for an auto option the next time I change. -
Do I like the Passat? 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Thinking of changing my car -its a Toyota Avensis 2.0 Petrol auto T3-X. I posted on another thread about the Volvo V50/S40 and residuals but thats another story! I had a look at VW's over the weekend. On paper the new Jetta looks good value for money, but then I sat in one and its too small for me-I'm a big chap and fit nicely into the Avensis. -
Replacement for Forester 1 Oct 2006 (Forum)
As my Forester has heater leathed seats, climate and cruise control I would want to replicate these as I find them all helpful. So I am thinking of.... Audi A3 Sportback BMW 1-series Volvo S40/V50 Not certain I want a Merc A or B-class - am I right to dismiss these despite the fact I like sitting higher, as in the Forester. As I have done only 8,500miles pa over the last 21 months, economy is barely relevant, so whilst I'm not averse to diesel, its not vital. -
What company car thread but different! 16 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Must be comfy, have pace, lots of kit and not too boy racerish (i.e Subaru's and Mitsi's out). My shortlist so far is: Volvo C70 T5 GT Jag X Type 2.5 or 3.0 V6 BMW M3 E36 EVO BMW 330D Alfa Romeo 156 V6 Audi S3. The purchase cost isnt so much of an issue, more a loan under £350 per month up to 5 years. however resale in comparison to original purchase price must be decent. -
why do doors seem to be lighter? 31 Oct 2005 (Forum)
When I was growing up, you partly judged how "robust" a car was, by how heavy the doors felt as you closed them. In my Volvo S80, the doors feel much lighter than my friend's 2002 Vectra. Is the steel lighter but more rigid now? Do they think they can make the doors lighter just because you have 8 airbags now to cushion the impact? -
9-5 or Legacy wagon? 17 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Saabs is about the reliability of the newer ones - my 900 has never missed a beat, but she's a low-tech old thing in comparison to the new ones. And sorry, I'm just not old enough for a Volvo yet! Cheers Davros -
2nd Cheap car for commuting 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Hi I've decided my Volvo v70 is too expenside for me to do my commute to work in. The costs are centered on Depreciation, Servicing and Tyres. As I've already lost most of the depreciation on what is a nice car I thought I'd keep it and get a 2nd car to drive about 30k miles to and from work in. -
Rover 75 / MG ZT facelift 7 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I came so close to buying a ZT-T 190 last year, whose handling and feel-good factor astonished me, and it was mainly space requirements and 30 years of good family experience with Volvos that put me in a V70 2.4T instead, despite the considerable extra cost. What on earth have MG-Rover therefore been doing with the 2004 revisions? The 75 now looks like it rolled off a Lancia production line (remember them?!) -
Bus question for the legal eagles 6 Jul 2003 (Forum)
One for DVD, David HM et al, Today I was allocated an 'R' reg Volvo double decker that is fitted with a retarder on the gearbox which aids braking. Basically, the retarder slows the bus through the gearbox until the final 15mph when the foundation brakes cut in. -
New Estate Tow Car 3 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I have seen a 2.3 lpt estate which seems a good compromise. Thanks (p.s I don't really want to get into the 'wouldn't be seen dead in a Volvo debate') -
Fuel Guage Accuracy 25 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Having only had the car a week I did have a sneaky suspicion that the red line wasn't particularly generous, but not that tight fisted. Is this a feature of Volvo's or is something not quite right? Cheers Stuart -
legal protection on insurance 19 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The legal protection co. recovered not a penny for me - I had paid them £24.00 for this service when I renewed my insurance. I will not be paying for this service again. I have a Volvo 940 estate now; galvanised rubber coated damped RSJs as front and rear bumpers - plus tow bar. Unless its another 940 that reverses into me next time, then my car will be unmarked in a similar 2 mph collision. -
Showroom4cars Top Ten 5 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Labouring under the spirit-numbing restrictions of company car policies for the subsequent 25 years kept BMWs out of reach -- VWs, Volvos, Fords, yes, but don't even think of dreaming about a BMW. But all the time their image was changing in my mind and was crystallized in the yuppie 1980s, by which time I wanted nothing to do with them -- me, the enthusiast for minority pursuits and causes, yuppie I was not (both age and money disqualified me). -
"Driving other cars" extension 25 Nov 2001 (Forum)
My dear wife recently bought a Mondeo and we still have her Volvo 340 parked in the drive, taxed and tested. My own insurance policy covers me to drive other cars on a third party only basis and I asked the insurance company if I could drive the 340 under this insurance. -
Volvo V60 - Mad to buy a used diesel? 30 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Hello all, I am looking at buying a 2nd hand V60 (the new model, post 2018) at some point in the next 6 months. Current car is a petrol and the intention...
