  • Skoda Octavia 1.2 TSi S - Replacing my Mondeo 1 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Comparing my old Mondeo side by side with a 2012 Octavia hatch I was suprised to find the Octavia boot a similar length and slightly wider between the wheel arches in the boot.   Thereare  a couple of 2012  Octavia 1.2tsi' S's advertised locally for 9500-10k. 10K for one  registered Sept 2012. From a Skoda dealer . 13k miles. Manual gearbox.   The 1.2TSi has better mpg and half the Excise Duty of my Mondeo but still has the same size boot..
  • Choosing a four wheel drive 4x4 - for school runs 28 May 2010 (Forum)
I meandered down the M1 at this point (getting 70mpg down to Meadowhall) and noticed the wheels and tyres on trucks. They were all narrower than on the 4x4`s - as were the wheels on a coach. I thought - why not just fit HGV wheels on these prestige 4x4`s? Sure, they would be narrower - and the chassis would need to be beefed up very slightly to handle them - but it seems so much the `next step`.
  • Audi A3 Sportback (2004 - ) - A3 2.0 TDI S tronic - any good? 25 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I picked my mother in law up yesterday and she announced she has put down a deposit on a Feb 09 A3 2.0 TDI S tronic Sportback, from a main dealer. She is changing from a 99 SLK 230K, as its too small and low for her now. She drives no more than 10k per year, short local trips, with a few longer motorway trips over the year.
  • Motoring glass - scrape rub scratch 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
There seems to have been a trace of certain trends in specific decades 1) Spraying de- icer 1960`s millions of spray cans dischaging into the atmosphere. De-icer, hairspray, deodorant, whole cars being sprayed with cans and little airless paint guns on the drive. 2) Mid 1980`s Scraping is `in`. Hard plastic scrapers grind grit remorselessly into frosted screens. 3) 1990`s Hot water for some and a few cracked screens, scraping for others - austerity rules.
  • Why are so many BMW X5 drivers arrogant? 3 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Private number beginning with the letters "X5" which were illegally spaced , Privacy Glass rear AND front (also illegal), and the obligatory black exterior colour. I frequently notice X5's being driven like this, or an inch from your bumper, or diving from the outside land of the motorway into the exit lanes, or joining the motorway and going straight to the outside lane. Why is it that X5's seem to be more prone to this sort of bad behavour than other cars?
  • Was there ever really a 'golden age' for motoring? 17 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Any road building proposals are met with outrage, car manufacturers are stifled by regulations that stifle innovation. Traffic calming this, anti-car that......etc. etc. I am fully aware that motoring in the 50's and 60's wasn't that great either. Cars were truly awful by today's standards and the number of fatalities were shocking when you take traffic density into account. However, I get the impression that there was a greater sense of optimism and enthusiasm in those days.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 03 1.9TDi S 130 - intermittant non starting 17 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, First post for me! I have an interesting problem with my Passat. It's a 53 plate 1.9 TDI S 128 (uprated to 168). Been working fine for the best part of a year, been serviced and the lot. Recently its not being starting on occasions. Having called the AA out a couple of times when it broke down, on both times they thought it would be a fuel problem such as a fuel lifting pump or the like.
  • Oil Filter tool Augmented suffering. Your Car? 19 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Its cold, its wet, you`re under the car again looking at the same old oil filter arrangement. You manage to get `The Tool` on and it promptly slips off.. So what`s your history with oil filter removal tools? and which car made you suffer most? Of course those thin skinned `spin on` cartridges became a problem, while the previous generation just needed a socket.
  • MINI Cooper S R53 (2002 - 2007) - '06 R56 Needs headgasket replacing. Will it be ok? 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Dear John Since purchasing my Mini Cooper S R56 I have had problems from the word go! It all started off with a horrible diesel like rattle at cold start up, the dealer replaced the cam tensioner under warrenty, this had no effect and the problem continued, however to replace this the high pressure cam driven fuel pump had to be removed/replaced, My second trip to the dealer was to have this replaced as it was leaking post cam tensioner replacement, at the same time I told the dealer the diesel rattle sound at cold start up was still there, BMW tech reps were called in, they said they had seen this on the early build R56 engines and to replace the engine.
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 2001 1.6 zetec S breakdown 25 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I have a Ghia with the 1.6 Zetec S Engine. After sorting out the initial overheating problem it had when I first bought it (thanks in no small part to the members of this site), it has been a great little car with no problems. Today, i drove it to work and back and it was fine as usual.
  • Fuel economy (bragging/ranting) 18 Aug 2005 (Forum)
After being amused/shocked by Adam?s thread about how much his 600cc 8hp Focus consumed (6 mpg if I remember correctly) I?ve been keeping a beady eye on the trip computer of the 3 litre 406. I loaded it to the supension stops with wife, kids and elderly parents and took it to Gdansk for ten days.
  • Warning! Volvo & Chrysler a/c 16 Jul 2001 (Forum)
On Voyagers, it sometimes takes the compressor with it, spreading remnants throughout the whole system, particularly if it has rear a/c as well. Those with 850/V70's should take a lok at the bulletin board at www.volvoclub.org.uk. Other makes that have had the same problem, but now seem to have fixed it, are Ford Galaxy & variants, and Audi A4's. HJ: You mught like to add this to your comments against Chryslers.
  • VOLKSWAGEN Golf Ready2Go 1.0 TSI 85kW 115CV - Should I buy a car with a visible crack? 27 Jul 2024 (Forum)
My only worry is that there is a small crack in the framework at the back left of the car (approx 1 inch) - only visible when you open the boot. Aesthetically it´s not a problem but I´m wondering if it could be a sign of structural damage. The car salesman assures me that it´s not but he does admit that it shows that the car must have had a knock in that part of the frame.

  • Waxoyl or equivalent? 16 Sep 2018 (Forum)
This has almost certainly been asked before, but I can't find a recent response, so thought I would ask afresh! My mx5's wheels are off to be refurbished next week, so while they are off I want to apply some kind of rust protection at least in the wheelarches (where there is no plastic liner), and possibly the chassis.
  • What car is in the new lynx advert? 23 Apr 2017 (Forum)
Then, being a bit of a nerd, started thinking back through 'my memery archives'!.The car is a coupe and looks to be mid 60's to mid 70's, pillarless, and has quarterlights. Oh, and doesnt look big enough to be a yank. 1st thought was opel manta A, but i couldnt find any pics of one with quarterlights, plus, the rear window looks much deeper than the car in the advert.
