  • Waves, string instability theory and traffic jams 10 Jun 2010 (Forum)
He has identified patterns in these traffic models that will make working on more complicated scenarios possible and which could lead to more accurate forecasting of traffic flow. “What is important here”, says Wilson, “is not necessarily shortening journey times, but making the journey time more reliable and consistent so people can more accurately forecast the time it will take to get from A to B”.
  • Mercedes Benz - 04 2.1 04 reg Vito- electrical faults. 16 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Do people offer a Diagnostics Machine on Wheels service so that I can assess my needs before using up my free AA trip. I need this to be remedied pretty quickly and would love to have any advice. Cost is an important factor here, my resources will run out if this gets much over a grand. I know I'm sounding like a real amature here but I'm honestly not that bad. I haven't got the operating handbook to identify the lights and I've been putting off buying a vehicle new enough to have to rely on an engine management system because I don't know where to start with fault finding.
  • Cheques & Drafts 29 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Angela Thomas, Cheque and Credit Clearing Company Managing Director, said, ?Although cheque use has fallen over the last few years, cheques remain important for certain customers in certain situations. Whether it?s a small business or someone selling a car, there are many occasions where cheques still get handed over. These changes will really benefit anyone paying in a cheque, offering them certainty and clarity on when the money has cleared and giving real peace of mind.?
  • An Open Letter To Car Drivers 6 Jan 2008 (Forum)
THAT is what we have to do to avoid squashing you between 44 tons of metal and whatever may be in front of you, and we always do it, but that counts for nothing in your eyes. Is your journey really that important? Is your life really so unimportant? Is your consideration and regard for every other road user so low? Why does it always have to be YOU first, what happened to good manners and forbid, good driving?
  • Servicing Scam 27 Jan 2005 (Forum)
This apparently could take you all the way up to 20,000 miles/ 2 years if you are that type of driver (i.e. not the stop start stuff) - see: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/services/servicing/longlife_service_regime Anyway, so at the one year point I get a letter from the dealer informing me that the car needed to be brought in for servicing (with some blurb stressing the importance of regular servicing in order to maintain safety, reliability and re-sale value), no problem I thought given I had already paid for it. Imagine my confusion after I had dropped off the car at the garage to return home to an answering machine message from the dealer informing me that the car wasn't due a service and I should come back and pick it up.
  • BMW overtakes Mercedes 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
"There is a question about whether or not Mercedes can actually close the gap with BMW in terms of return," said Keith Hayes, motor industry analyst at Goldman Sachs. In the six months to June, BMW group sales rose 8.5 per cent to 590,983 cars, while Mercedes group saw a decline of 3.3 per cent to 584,800.BMW said profits were more important to it than its sales ranking. But Mercedes said: "We want to be the No1 premium brand on a long-term perspective. It will be completely different next year and we will have increases again." Mercedes predicts a recovery later this year as the redesigned A-Class and new Smart four-seater rekindle the interest of drivers, and expects sales to be about 50,000 higher than last year's 1.3m.Michael Ganal, director of sales and marketing at BMW, forecast "significant" growth for the rest of the year.
  • Water V Coke 25 Feb 2003 (Forum)
This is really an eye opener.... Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before. WATER: 1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. 2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. 3.
  • Calling all engineers and web whizzos? 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
t come across before: that of running modern car engines on LEADED fuel. Background Here in Jordan almost all the second-hand cars imported into the country are sourced from Europe (Germany provides 75% of total, mostly BMWs and Mercs) or the USA, i.e. are catalyst equipped. However, you can only get UNLEADED fuel at a few fuel stations here in the capital, Amman.
  • Top Cop nicked at 128MPH! 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Now one of his superiors has allegedly failed to listen but Douw Steyn, acting head of the Department of Community Safety, said: "We all make mistakes from time to time. The important thing is that although a senior person in the department has been caught, I have spoken to all the relevant people and can tell you that he received no special treatment. This will all be done by the book."
  • Wonderful Range Rover USA service 13 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Powers USA rankings where Jag did well and this drew some caustic comments from one reader... but It seems to me that in the US at any rate Ford is making a major effort with their 'import' lines. I had a chance to chat with several new Jag owners at the dealer and they were all full of good things to say. ~R Nantucket Island, U.S.A.

Patty Lewis - Human Resources Director December 2nd TO: ALL EMPLOYEES In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday that often coincides with Christmas (though unfortunately not this year). However, from now on we're calling it our "Holiday Party." The same policy applies to employees who are celebrating Kwanzaa at this time.
  • Positioning - Nigel Albright 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Where the performance of a vehicle is concerned then stability is a factor the driver should be conscious of all the time and that is related to the important subject of 'Forces acting on a vehicle in a curved path'. Of the three stability is perhaps the easiest to deal with because it is always subservient to the other two. Safety and view, however, cannot be taken as separate entities.
  • Coach - false claims of leaving the scene of an accident 26 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I am a coach driver and i have received a letter from the police sayinng i had been reported for leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving, on the day in question i was indicating to turn right onto another road, i initially stopped due to traffic coming towrds me, i had a clear view of the the road i was turning into and could see it was clear of any traffic , a car flashed me to allow me to turn into the rd wich was still clear, about 20 yards up that rd was a left hand bend, as i initiated the turn a car appeared the front end of my coach was into that road the car kept coming towards me, at which time i stopped i was obstructing the junction to that rd also the rear of the coach was obstucting the rd i was exiting, the car was preventing me to move any further, the passenger of the car was ranting and raving telling me to reverse back out that was not an option, eventually the driver of the car reversed back, the way he reversed gave me the impression he could not drive he was weaving all over when reversing back, this allowed me to move forward or so i thought this driver decided to drive forward again preventing me from moving forward any further, the car then squeezed past me so i carried on to the coach park which was on this rd, when i got out of my coach to open the coach park gate, these two guys appeared behind me, the passenger got out of the car shouting foul and abusive language to me calling me names then saying i had hit the car, i replied if their is any damage on the coach it was the driver who caused it, then i invited this guy to inspect my coach for any damage which their was none not even the slightest of scrapes looking at the damage on the car which was the rear wheel arch it would have been impossible for me to have struck the car without causing significant damage to the car (the damage to the car was only slight) and the coach, this guy declined to look at the coach and when i said i would call the police he got back into the car their drove off, i parked the coach in the coach park and sat there for an hour fear they may come back, rather than walk i got a taxi to my hotel, why i didnt call the police was beyond me i know that i should have done so, the coach was displaying in the window the hotel i was staying at, this happened on the Saturday the coach was in that coach park until 10 o'clock Sun then parked back in there at 1 o'clock sunday afternoon until 9 monday morning which was the day of our return, i received the first letter on the 29th oct 14 which i responded to saying i was the driver, i then received a second letter to produce my documents on the 11th Nov 14 i done that immediatley, from then until 21st of January 15 i received a letter asking me to complete a statement concerning the so called collision, at the bottom of the letter it says -: i do not wish to complete the attached statement concerning the above mentioned collision and underneath that i did not witness the collision, it says its important to send either the completed statement or the prior mentioned section as soon as possible could you please advise me yours sincerley Ron
  • berlingo, vw caddy, golf or skoda yeti? 29 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Requirements: quality, reliability, and safety come first. Large boot space and folding back seats (if a car) are important. Use 1 suggests a small, car-derived van such as Berlingo, Partner, Kangoo, Ford Transit Connect or VW Caddy. I've recently driven vans a few times, both small, car-derived ones and bigger Ford Transits, and overall I've found the experience very enjoyable.
  • citroen xsara picasso 2002 - Unsure if i should still buy.. 1 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Interior near enough immaculate, very clean and no smells, exterior has what seemed good body work, just a slight dent above one of the handles but didn't seem important. Car started perfectly and fast first time (although whether it had been warmed up before I got there is another thing). All manuals and spare key with it, full spare wheel also.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV - Bizarre insurance dispute 19 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I'll try and condense this as much as I can without missing out any important facts, but its the strangest series of events I've ever heard about and am seriously hoping someone can help give me some pointers The insurance problem is actually happening to a friend, but he struggles to stay calm when talking to people about it so he asked if I would try and make some headway for him In brief here is the series of events In 1986 he got a 5 year ban for drink driving In 1995 he re passed his test and was re-issued with a license In 2005 his insurance company said he needed to swap his license for a picture style one as his paper one was out of date He applied for the picture license which the DVLA sent out but then the insurance company refused to insure him anyway claiming that he had outstanding convictions which had expired, but that he had then never retaken his test When he asked about the alleged convictions as he hadnt (to his knowledge) had any convictions since retaking his test, the insurance company said the DVLA themselves had informed them that he should have surrendered his licence in 1997 and re-applied for his test in 2002 The same DVLA that a month earlier had sent him out his new photo driving licence The insurance company wont give anymore details other than what I have written here, nor will they provide a copy of the letter the DVLA is alleged to have sent them As a result he has had to state that he has been refused insurance each year since, which has meant despite being in his 40's he has been paying more insurance than the average 20 year old He has tried to clear it up before but has never got anywhere with it which isnt helped by him having a short fuse, so with the insurance price hike this year he has asked me to see if someone more reasoned can unravel the mess I was planning to start with the DVLA themselves which means going into one of their offices where I am hoping a complete driver history should be able to be obtained in hard copy including all convictions, driving tests and the current licence status The only "odd" thing I have noticed whilst going through all of the paperwork he has acquired over the years is that on his second licence it lists the date he passed his test, then the date the license was issued but then also lists a date 10 months after that it should be returned (that was on there when the license was first printed incase that isnt clear rather than being added later) I've never seen a licence issued with a note to return it 10 months later before and that does seem a bit strange by itself Especially as it was around 10 years after that licence was issued that the DVLA sent him out a new photo ID even though they apparently told his insurance company he hadnt had a valid licence for the previous 8 years Has anyone else come across anything this silly before?
  • Buying 2nd hand - Overpriced dealers or is it me? 5 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Like most of us, I've searched autotrader online/freeads/local papers Fleabay etc, and I can barely find a vehicle to go and view! On Ebay I have found several vehicles that sound reasonable, but important info is always missing - either a reference to history or mileage! Both crucial, but all too often 'missing'. After messaging you find the 60,000 miler, 1 owner car has 'no history at all' (So in my mind = clocked), or the about right price vehicle has done 140,000 miles!!
  • How (not) to use a gearbox to slow 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
It may well be better in certain situations to select a gear slightly earlier when approaching a doubtful traffic situation, such as a busy roundabout. In circumstances such as these, it is important to be flexible when applying the 'one gear change only' rule. As with other dirving 'rules' , sticking rigidly to the text book occasionally brings its own problems. A good driver must be flexible if safety is the prime objective.
  • Mondeo's at auction (again) 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
What would you say I should currently be aiming to pay for a good condition 97/98 2.0 Ghia X hatchback? Mileage is not important to me, but condition is - I don't want something that rattles or creaks or is covered in scratches, if you know what I mean ;) Should I just give up and buy something else? I don't want to go for a GLX, Si or a Ghia becuase I know I'll just be thinking 'If only I'd got a Ghia X' further down the line ;)
  • Honda Jazz - Honda Jazz 2007 - to sc*** or attempt fix? 12 Jul 2025 (Forum)
Apologies for long post but context is important to the question raised. My daughter has a 2007 Jazz 1.4 DSi CVT with 82000 miles which she has had for 5 years and essentially got her real driving experience after passing her test. It has a few war wound parking dings, a minor sc***e on passenger door, a ding on drivers front wing and the air con doesn't and hasn't since she had it( I suspect the condenser is holed as the front bumper is a slightly different colour so maybe had a minor prang before we had it).
