  • Any - Electric Cars Tow Bars 19 Jun 2022 (Forum)
It seems the ID3 / Kona size can’t because of battery weight / range / too much pressure on running gear. I only want to tow a small trailer to the refuse tip occasionally and a small lightweight dinghy twice a year. Any idea on what I could buy to fit the bill ? Thanks Stuart
  • Towing in offside lane of 3+ lane carriageways 12 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Did I miss a change in the law somewhere? When did it become 'OK' to tow in the offisde lane of a 3 or 4 lane carriageway? ...or are there just SO many ignorant drivers on the road?   How long will it be until we see HGVs and coaches flouting the regulations more often* as well???
  • vauxhall brava - Vauxhall Brava the same as an Isuzu TF? 10 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I am trying to figure out what my Isuzu TF double cab pick up can tow, however I struggling to find this info. I have come across detailed towing specs for a double cab Brava and was wondering if these would be similar to my truck? If not, does anyone know what my truck can tow - 2.8td double cab 2001 TF pickup.

  • Passat tiptronic and towing 7 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As my leg will be in pot for the next few weeks after damaging my achilles, I have traded my manual Passat for a 2004 PD 130 Highline with tiptronic. The car has done 34,000 miles, many of which have been done towing a caravan. It drives well and has been properly serviced but I am a little worried that there may be problems in store from gearbox/brakes/engine. Any suggestions as to what I should look out for?

  • Tow car for 8k budget. Diesel or petrol? 24 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Hi, i'm after buying a caravan and need a car that'll tow upto a decent weight for my 8k. Thinking large estate or possibly an SUV.  I will use if for towing, weekly 30 odd mile drive and the occasional long motorway run. The mpg of a diesel is appealing but everything i look at people warm me off for DPF, EGR, etc. issues.
  • Auto gearboxes and towing. 21 Apr 2017 (Forum)
In the Telegraph on Saturday HJ wrote that towing with a vehicle with an automatic gearbox is not recommended. He cited gearbox overheating issues and wear on the torque converter. My new Volvo XC60 D4 has a torque converter autobox. I specified it from new with a towbar.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe - Creaking tow bar 15 Aug 2015 (Forum)
I bought a new Santa fe new generation 18 months ago.  I had a tow bar fitted by my local Hyundai dealership and have had nothing but problems with it and the car.  It started with creaking on the first time out with my caravan and despite 3 further tow bars being fitted by a combination of Chelmsford Hyundai and Witter the creaking is still there albeit not as bad as it was initially.
  • Any - No car insurance 7 Feb 2013 (Forum)
The police confirmed she was insured ,but refused to reimburse the tow in charge of £150 , saying that if your car didn't show on the PNC .They were entitled to seize it and charge for towing away .It seems that her insurer had not entered her details on the MID . It seems wrong to me that the towing fee was still payable even though the driver was insured .
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 Towing/ClutchBurn/Clutch Prices 19 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Is this reasonable? Any advice on these clutches and towing welcome - all I can come up with is don't reverse. Guy at Ford reckons cos no asbestos is used they dont take the strain anymore. Also rekoned his dad did exactly thesame thing although his mondeo only had 20000 on clock.
  • skoda/yeti - Medium sized tow-car 18 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I am looking for a reliable modest tow car for a modest sized caravan, and I was wondering if anybody has advice. My starting point was a 1.9 diesel Focus, say 2-3 years old, with a tow capacity of 1500kg. However, I have seen on Autotrader a lot of 1.6 diesel i30's at reasonable prices, which can pull 1400kg, and this should be enough.
  • Inconsiderate horse box towing 18 Nov 2008 (Forum)
followed a very slow moving towed horse box for miles down a country road and then down the A40 in a very long stream of (frustrated) traffic. I actually stopped off on the route, picked up a newspaper and caught the long queue up!
  • Shogun 3.2 DiD Auto box Question. 21 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have had the above car for 2 years and use it mainly for towing our caravan the question is when towing the auto box very rarely locks up the torque convertor. Even when solo it will only stay in lock up at about 75-80 MPH, but when you select 4th gear with the tiptronic it will stay in lock up down to around 55 MPH towing or not.
  • Socially responsible tow bars? 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
In HJ's Saturday Telegraph spot he advises one reader that a detachable tow bar should be fitted in order to be "socially responsible". I may be being terminally dense here but what's socially irresponsible about having a legal fixed tow bar? Are we worried that tactile parking may damage someone's number plate?
  • ''Diesel'' Towing caravan 2 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Hi all, What is going on with diesel ?!?! I need to tow a caravan and dont see any other alternatives to a diesel car..... Am I correct in thinking that if I was to purchase a 2016 registration plate '66' diesel car: 1.) - It will be Euro 6 compliant, as this was brought in from September 2015, therefore avoiding some of the charges London etc are bringing in.
  • Tow Ball Mounted Cycle Carrier 19 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I need to get a tow ball fitted to my C4 Picasso so I can mount a cycle carrier (can't use one that hangs off the hatch back and I don't want a roof one) Question is........do I need to have electrics fitted for a light board.
  • How fast is it safe to tow? 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I saw a small white van with hazard lights on ahead of me, as he pulled out to pass a couple of cars I thought, he's a bit close to the van in front of him. Sure enough when I passed them, still doing 45 ish there was a 15 foot tow rope between them. What kind of mind thinks that is safe?
  • In the US they tow 'em away & sell 'em ! 2 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Just listened to a slot on the news about Philadelphia where they introduced a policy of towing away/confiscating and auctioning cars belonging to people who have flouted the law e.g. by having no insurance, driving licence, outstanding fines etc. It strikes me that we're far too lenient on persistent offenders (like car tax dodgers) in the UK and should consider a similar law here.
