BlueMotion 1.6 TDI 105 Estate

Spacious family load lugger but surprisingly unreliable after the warranty ran out and always park in gear!

Bought this car at 18000 miles no issues until 40000 miles 3 months after the warranty expired when the EGR valve failed. VW paid for the valve and half the labour, cost to us £350.
50000 miles full service included new fuel filter housing £250.
50200 miles EPB roll way incident 200 miles after full service after 32000 incident free miles. Car was parked on a very slight incline in a multi storey car park on a very hot morning. Forty minutes later the car rolled out of its parking bay. Very strange as the driver always used the EPB manually so any failure to apply should have caught by the back up autohold facility(subject to the usual caveats in the handbook).
So always park in gear not just on hills. We had the EPB checked by another dealer and they reported no logged issues, but that the VW diagnostic system recommend an ECU update based on the reported EPB incident. Complained to VW as the car had only recently had a major service so why was the software not updated? VW had the dealer carry out further tests and passed the data to the factory. Ultimately the response was that no issue was found...
60000 miles service and emissions update. The day after ABS/ESP autohold failure. Car taken back and VW found a rear wheel ABS sensor had a piece of metal stuck in the sensor recess. Sensor cleaned and no further incidents until.61000 miles just before trade in! ABS/ESP warning lights again. This time VW diagnosed a broken magnetic sensor ring on the rear hub. Cost to fix £450 well they did knock £50 quid off, We have owned four Audis with no major issues and expected the VW to be even more reliable. In this case I was glad to see the back of it. We did get some good will as the car was always VW maintained. I would not buy one without a warranty, as I read up on the EPB system only after we had a problem and did not realise how costly the rear calipers and motors could be,(only slightly cheaper than the rear hub) Just remember to park in gear apparently the dealer always does..
