Good all round car... Just get a bigger engine

Joined new company last year, and my company car options were either the Citroen C5 2.0 diesel or the new Passat 1.6tdi

Opted for Passat due to huge interior, ideal for my large 6ft 3" frame, wife and two kids.

Good Points:

Save loads in BIK vs my old 2010 Audi A4 170bhp due to the low emissions.
£0 to tax car in 2012 and just £35 next year.
As mentioned already, huge interior
Comfortable seats, with automatic adjustable controls.
Simple dash layout. Cockpit is made for UK market unlike A4, which suffers from offset pedals and hidden dashboard switches.
Lot of standard kit on SE Version inc Auto lights/washers, Cruise Control, Music Interface MMI (Control Ipod through radio controls and steering wheel), Bluetooth, DAB Radio
Classy looking interior
Beautiful A Road and Motorway Cruiser
Light steering around town
Very quiet and refined whilst driving inc Motorways
Hill Start feature as standard - Basically wont release auto parking break until it feels biting point
Huge boot

Bad Points:

Some plastics feel cheap
Dash & Door Rattles
General finishes not up to Audi or BMW standard. Exposed nuts and bolts in doors etc, that were covered up by caps in my previous Audi.
No parking sensors as standard. Blind front view when parking due to the low nose, and rear parking a lottery for such a long car. Luckily for me, as my company purchased this car rather than lease it, I was allowed to add rear parking sensors after taking delivery at my own cost. Worth every penny.
Fuel economy is good but not great at 48mpg combined. My old A4 averaged 45mpg with a far bigger engine and my previous 318d (07 reg) managed 42mpg.
Replaced front two tyres at 21000 miles. Both worn down to around 1mm tread.
Car is a bit boring. Very conservative and I feel like I'm turning into my old man each time I get behind the wheel.

...And finally the 1.6tdi is severely under-powered for such a heavy car. Fine cruiser but if you need a burst of acceleration even at 70mph you need to drop down to 3rd or 4th gear otherwise you put your foot down and nothing happens in 5th or 6th.

Similar under-powering issues when driving up steep hills. The car will struggle in 2nd gear and advise you to drop down to first. Never experienced this in any car I have ever driven before.

Not sure why VW/Audi is lagging so far behind BMW when it comes down to their eco engines? New 316d has less emissions than the Passat with a bigger engine, and also can do 0-60 in around 10secs, whilst the Passat does it in 12.2 secs.

Good points outweigh the bad though. Compared against my old A4, the Passat has more standard equipment, better drivers position, more comfortable ride. Actually the best comfort I have experienced as a driver. Passat steering more refined vs A4. Slightly heavier feel at low and fast speeds. Loads more room in back and boot.

Perfect family car, and a good company car for most but I would urge everyone to look at the 2.0tdi 143 or 170bhp versions, pending option choices and your own finance.
