Overall reliability

An amazingly good and underrated car.

Having read your advice pages for years I cannot recall mention of the Skoda Roomster. When my wife required a compact car with good leg room in the rear and a large boot together with automatic transmission the Roomster Scout appeared to fit the bill.

Although for our special order we had to wait some 10 months we can certainly say the wait was worthwhile. The DSG box is superb and the ride, handling and comfort are excellent. Build quality is also equal to VW. So impressed with this car that I took the opportunity to buy one for myself in June this year but this time just a SE version with a very slick manual gearbox and we are delighted with this car as well. Both the dealers, Underwood of Colchester and EAG of Rayleigh, have been excellent.

With so many cars now being quite wide the Roomster like the Fabia are comparatively narrow compared to most cars and is therefore far more nimble both for parking and for negotiating congested narrow roads. While it is a little unusual in its appearance it does seem a shame that it is overlooked by many and its many talents not appreciated.

As you will know the engines and much of the equipment hails from VW but value for money is so much better. We just hope that when this model is replaced in 2014/15 that it does not become a new bloated version which seems to be the case of almost every new car that is launched when compared to the previous version.

Before readers assume that I must be some” fuddy duddy” with little appreciation of other makes of car I would mention that I am fortunate to have a 2012 Jaguar XF too, which I would add is also a wonderful car but so it should be!
