Perky and surprisingly capable

In downsizing from a Citroen C5 estate we anticipated making some compromises. However, a test drive confirmed HJ's recommendation of this fine little car.

Space efficiency is great, accommodating four adults in comfort without front seat occupants needing to concertina to make rear seat legroom. There's no denying the boot is small but it swallows three large 'bags for life' which is enough for our weekly shop.

First impressions of the drive are how civilised and lively the i10 is. It pulls like a labrador pup on a lead and the car is impressively free of rattles and creaks, enhanced by a fairly taut suspension.

The power steering feels a tad disconnected – it's light and responsive without much road feedback. Like most small petrol engined cars, balancing the accelerator and clutch when setting off calls for a little delicacy and adjustment - think ballet pumps not Dr Martens.

The i10's compact dimensions make parking and manouevres like turning in the road a breeze.

The stereo is really decent and comes with a USB socket for connecting ipod/iphone – genuine cables to be had on ebay for around £15 – and the ipod integration just works.

There will be no bringing home wardrobes from IKEA, but with the savings on car tax, insurance and fuel costs there's spare cash to pay for home deliveries instead. We had been looking seriously at the Honda Jazz, which we liked a lot. However, we couldn't see enough of a difference to justify paying 50% more, so for us the i10 wins.

Overall, a brilliant little package with few trade-offs that's ideal for anyone who wants a car for getting from A to B economically.
