Credit hire after an accident

I was recently involved in a accident that was not my fault and the other party has admitted liability. My car is now going to be written off as it is uneconomical to repair. I've been told the hire car goes when I receive the cheque - haven't agreed a price yet.

I've read various posts regarding credit hire - is this my only option of having a car to enable me to look for a replacement car post settlement? So far the insurance company are just saying that the hire car goes once the amount is settled. I'm not in a position to buy a car before I get the settlement and I don't have access to another car.

If you take on a credit hire car the chances are you will end up having to pay for it yourself - at premium rates. And anyway once you get the insurer's cheque, that's it. No more money.
